What exactly is the purpose of the beer garden? A celebration, to raise funds, or citizens to meet the Walldogs? Would just like to know what the intentions are.

The beer garden has been relocated, but the intentions is a celebration and a fund raiser to meet the 100s of artist that will come to town. There will be food, bands, and beer tent. It is going to be so exciting. We would love to have more volunteers. When these artist come to town it is going to really get exciting.

If any of you get a chance, look up Lake Placid, Florida. They have murals covering almost all the building in that town. It is so beautiful and the whole town takes great pride in keeping it beautiful. Had the opportunity last year to drive there. I just loved it. I would love to see Kewanee when it is all done.

Why do you say that???? You must have not looked at the other towns that have done this. They are just gorgeous.

Look at these towns that have done it. Really brightens everything up.

I'm sorry but the murals just make the towns look absolutely beautiful. I am so excited they are doing it in Kewanee. This will be a historical event.

I agree - when you become an "ex" Kewanean, you don't get a say. Your opinion just doesn't matter. At least someone is trying to make things brighter and better for a change instead of putting down everything all the time.

i guess you CAN polish a turd. Kewanee needs JOBS. Murals don't have any coonection with jobs. Bring the jobs and the money and all the good stuff that makes a city beautiful come with it.
The murals on a *few* buildings will not cause the eyesore houses, yards, etc to look better. All people will say is:'Nice painting. Too bad it's in a town that looks like a dump."

Only a moron would think Kewanee has gotten better when half the population left when the jobs disappeared.

People who have left and are living in cities that have somehow improved, even after the recessions of the 80s 90s and 2008, do in fact have a right to add their input into a discussion of how Kewanee can improve itself after becoming "the white man's Detroit." Instead of saying "Look, just send us your state and federal tax dollars, we don't need your advice!," why not ask "How can we do it, too?"

Yeah, you think they would fix the streets before dumping money into a "BHCO" project. Putting new shocks on ever 2 years!

Would Kewanee have donated for these murals if there wasn't a 150,000 dollar grant? The local newspaper stated two years ago the KEDC received a grant for this mural project. Then this committee asks local business to donate money for this project. Then they get donations from a kids organization(Kids TRI}. another grant form the KEDC for mural improvements All this being published in the local paper. Then arguements over a beer tent. Don't have a beer tent have a picnic so the kids can meet these artists, They are the future of Kewanee, not drunk parents. Ask the mural dogs to donate for the maintenance of these murals, See what they say. Not against the murals, I'm sure they will look nice. Professional art is amazing. But when it is all said and done I hope a quarter of a million dollars brings in jobs to this community. The future is not on the walls it is in the businesses of the community. Maybe KEDC and Chamber can start an organization to find business to relocate to Kewanee. Maybe a new SAFEWAY for the the old cvs building. The future for the kids is employment, If there are no jobs the future will leave, Then the city will be just one big federal housing project, With pretty peeling walls.

1) Will all of the murals be located on routes 34 and 78, just as some of the eyesores mentioned above are, or will people have to take a chance and get off onto side streets to see them?
2) Will the murals be on buildings that will still be up for at least the next 20 years, or will we go to all this fuss to paint the side of an eyesore building that will probably come down before then?
3) We already have a big mural on 78 featuring Windmont Park. How much tourism and/or jobs has it brought into town? I have never seen anyone taking photos of it.
This sounds like another attempt to have a city-wide beer bash, and we already have one: it's called Hog Days. I think that if beautifying the city is the goal, and painting murals is the tactic to achieve that goal, it can be done a lot more cheaply and involve many more people directly if we had artists from Kewanee, especially from Kewanee and Wethersfield High Schools and Black Hawk College doing the work. Really, folks? We have to wine, dine, house, and *pay* outsiders to do something that we could easily be doing ourselves?

There are tons of murals, extremely beautiful murals on the sides of buildings located in the South and West Sides of Chicago. The sightseeing busses to view them leave every Saturday from the vacant CVS parking lot. Reserve your seats early, because they always sell-out *fast*! All ABOOOOOOOOARD!/sarcasm

Read the Parade publication about a year and a half ago as it was suggested by someone came in the times. It had a nice article about the Mural dogs Painting murals in Racine Wisconsin. It stated thatt these artists receive a 5,000 dollar donation for each mural painted. The town is doing 15 murals that is 75,000 dollars total. If it was all ready reported that a 150,000 dollar loan was granted to this KEDC committee, why are they asking business for donations. Then in the paper another grant from KEDC to have a triatholon for the KIds and YMCA donation. Then the kids TRI organization donates money to the wall dogs maintenance fund, All this is written in the local paper. Shouldn't that money go to the YMCA or the local tutor program. Pay these tutors to help there peers that will intern create smart kids and reward the kids that are educated. The world needs artists but not struggling artists. Engineers, acountants, doctors, teachers, farmers. that is what the future needs for a successful town. I think the murals will be beautiful but How much money is too much to spend on wall art. Maybe a business could use a small loan to improve itself verses a business donating to wall art. Plus that is a lot of money in the bank collecting interest. Is that in a five year CD or just interest account? Just keep it real!!!

Lots of beautiful murals in Detroit, too.
Tell ya what, civic leaders: why not get testimonials from the mayors of the cities that the Wall Dogs bilked money -oops, I mean accepted donations from detailing howw their town was looking like sh1t and had no jobs until the murals went up. It sounds like the only jobs being created are going to drunken druggged up 'artists' from out of town. WHAT A WASTE OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS!

It is a decrepit decaying dump full of alkie and druggie redneck white trash. All of that is so very true.
But, it's also a very cheap and still a very safe place to live. Water seeks its own level, and as long as us good people still have good paying jobs here in town, we can MAKE BANK in the present and have a very nice sized retirement package as well..

I can't wait to see these murals so I can whiz on them daily! Maybe I can get all of the train station tourists to join me.

btw... the train station was sold to us using the same rhetoric as these murals. How much has tourism risen with the new depot?

Durka ,you would think you would have developed some common sense after all your years. This is definitely not my project and as a painter I am curious how painting soft red brick surfaces are going to hold up in a town with so much train traffic.I have been painting for over 20 years and would love to know what type of paint and primer are going to be putting on such a lasting impression. If the project works,it would be great and probably will add to the tourist industry here at least a little. If the event is held correctly ,the whole thing can pay for itself.I have seen some of their work and it is beautiful,so are the trees I am planting and my fruit will create Jobs.I see no support from anyone on my project other than my friends. If I had 50 thousand dollars I would build a facility to process fruit that would create jobs and for a beer tent,I would have wine and food instead.I am still happy something is being done to HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE.I hope that when I finally receive financial help to build the necessary foundation for my vision that I can have opportunity to look back on this wall dogs visit as something more positive than just another attempt by city persons to do everything but help the one person trying to actually do something for the people ,by the people.Money spent on BHCO stays directly into the community or at least it can depending on local business involvement..So am I happy ,yes too an extent.I am more proud of those who have put the event together.I wish they would help me manifest my vision.. BHCO moving towards a cleaner greener way of life
