I am concerned by what is going on behind the backs of most Neosho residents. An Economic Development group is making plans to destroy some of Newton County best farm land and the lives of the people who own and farm these lands.
The area known as Keeling Flats in the Shoal Creek Valley (just off of Business 60 Hwy. going towards Granby) is where this group is planning to start an Intermodal Shipping Depot. They are planning on taking the valley from the owners on way or another. None of these farmers want to sell or leave their homes and farms. All the farms are 2nd or 3rd generations farms, with grandchilden waiting to make them the 4th generation to farm these lands.
The impact to the community will be far reaching. It will change our town and the surrounding area forever. We will have 18 wheelers driving thur our town all hours of the day, also a large increase of train traffic going slower and blocking crossings for a longer period of time. If you live on or drive Business 60 Hwy. you will have to see miles of shipping containers, trains, cranes, lights and semi trucks all thur the valley. This will be in operation 24 hours a day.
This group also have not taken into account the impact to Shoal Creek and the wildlife that lives in this area. The plans that they are making to control the flood waters will only make other areas flood worse, including the city of Neosho. There is also a nesting pair of Bald Eagles 1/4 miles up stream which will be impacted to the point of abandonment of the nest.
This group says this is good for our community, bringing more industry and jobs to our area. In truth I beleive it will only help this group of men bring more money into their pockets.
WE CAN NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO OUR COMMUNITY!!!!!!!
