The Co Commissioners paid $3500.00 in taxpayer money to put a mural on Nitsch's barn North of Y C. It is very hard to see if you are looking for it and impossible to see if you are not looking for it. The idea of a mural was okay if it had been on the side of a building instead of the roof.

How do you know how much they paid? Never did see any amount in the paper. You must be a county employee in the know or just guessing.

I kinda like it. At least somebody is doing something for this place.

You are probably right, the painting would have been more easily seen on the side of the Nitsch's Antique barn, but at 65 miles an hour driving down the road, I think the concept was to get an impression of it, then stop and talk about it, or remember the next time, and stop. The Welcome to Woodson County really stands out on the side of the barn.

From what I understand, the painting will last 12 to 15 years. That is a lot of advertising for Woodson County. If you take what you quoted for a price and compare it to an average newspaper display ad, at $40.00 per once a week,(4 weeks in a month) you will have advertised 21.8 months compared to 13 years (or 156 weeks) marketing Woodson County 7 days a week to the many strangers driving north or south on highway 75.

Getting the word out about Woodson County and Yates Center is an important step in getting people interested in living here.

Are you one of those that think we are doing just fine, just as we are?

I far well know that we are not doing as well as we could. All I was saying is that you have to go out of your way to see it now. I didnot even see the Woodson County sign on the side of the barn until I saw the paper tonight. If you put up a sign near the road for a while maybe people might notice it.

Wolfman Jack "wrote" How do you know how much it was? It was in the paper last fall when they contracted to have it painted.

To put up a sign takes permission from Kansas Department of Transportation and sometimes that takes years. Kansas has strict rules on signs along the highway, that's why you don't see many unless they are in cities. The ones that are out there now are grandfathered in. Southeast Kansas Tourism Region has been trying to get the rules changed for years...so far, no go.

Remember when Iola got the billboard west of town? That upset everyone and I'll bet it was more than $3500.00. Someone needs to check with the company that owns that to line it up for Yates Center to advertise.

I had a good time watching this being painted. I pass by there around 7:30 every morning and around 5:30 every evening and could see the painting take shape. I never had a problem seeing it like Hometown Boy said.

I love this town. If you sit on your hands and do nothing, people complain. If you stick your neck out and try to do something, people complain. One of these days we are going to go downtown to vote and there won't be any names on the ballet because our elected officials will be worn out hearing people complain if they do anything. Nothing in this life is free. I would rather see our County Commissioners spend $3500 trying to get Yates Center and Woodson County's name out there and possible attract one family or one business than hold the money and do nothing.

Amen. Everyone has a right to an opinion, but they also have an equal responsibility to make it an educated one.

I drove by the barn last week, completely unaware of the fact that anything had been done to it, and the sign on the side jumped right out at me. I think it is GREAT that the commissioners are doing something like that.
Passing Through hit the nail on the head about people complaining when something is done and when it isn't.
At least someone is trying something...and I hope they do it again!

Guess if I had a plane i could fly low an it would look pretty awesome...
