How do you know how much they paid? Never did see any amount in the paper. You must be a county employee in the know or just guessing. I kinda like it. At least somebody is doing something for this place. |
||||
You are probably right, the painting would have been more easily seen on the side of the Nitsch's Antique barn, but at 65 miles an hour driving down the road, I think the concept was to get an impression of it, then stop and talk about it, or remember the next time, and stop. The Welcome to Woodson County really stands out on the side of the barn. From what I understand, the painting will last 12 to 15 years. That is a lot of advertising for Woodson County. If you take what you quoted for a price and compare it to an average newspaper display ad, at $40.00 per once a week,(4 weeks in a month) you will have advertised 21.8 months compared to 13 years (or 156 weeks) marketing Woodson County 7 days a week to the many strangers driving north or south on highway 75. Getting the word out about Woodson County and Yates Center is an important step in getting people interested in living here. Are you one of those that think we are doing just fine, just as we are? |

I wrote 156 weeks above and meant to type 156 months...BIG difference!! sorry for the typo...

I far well know that we are not doing as well as we could. All I was saying is that you have to go out of your way to see it now. I didnot even see the Woodson County sign on the side of the barn until I saw the paper tonight. If you put up a sign near the road for a while maybe people might notice it.

Wolfman Jack "wrote" How do you know how much it was? It was in the paper last fall when they contracted to have it painted.

To put up a sign takes permission from Kansas Department of Transportation and sometimes that takes years. Kansas has strict rules on signs along the highway, that's why you don't see many unless they are in cities. The ones that are out there now are grandfathered in. Southeast Kansas Tourism Region has been trying to get the rules changed for years...so far, no go. Remember when Iola got the billboard west of town? That upset everyone and I'll bet it was more than $3500.00. Someone needs to check with the company that owns that to line it up for Yates Center to advertise. |

I had a good time watching this being painted. I pass by there around 7:30 every morning and around 5:30 every evening and could see the painting take shape. I never had a problem seeing it like Hometown Boy said.

You got a good memory cause I don't remember the paper saying. |

1 Passing Through hit the nail on the head about people complaining when something is done and when it isn't. At least someone is trying something...and I hope they do it again! |

Guess if I had a plane i could fly low an it would look pretty awesome... |

It will be July 10 and 11. It will be held at the grade school. There will be a BBQ cook off at Lincoln park and something going on at the stadium, as well as other tings going on.This is going to be a yearly event.

There will be a beer garden like at YC days. But it will be closer to the celebration. I guess too that they are pronouncing it Mardi Grass.There will be an arts and craftds fair also.
