Your gonna have to use Mexican or Navajo labor to get your unit built right and under budget. Go try NY,or NJ to get those $25-30 per hr. WHITE carpenters.

A lot of these type of jobs have been taken over by outsiders, it's about time we get our own trained and employed, in any type of industry. Now isn't the time to be waiting around for any kind of casino per cap payouts.

Go try NY,or NJ to get those $25-30 per hr. WHITE carpenters. The Union Carpenters make 20-25 dollars an hour at these powerplants, APS and PNM. This is straight time pay. After 8 hours is time and a half pay, Fridays and Saturdays are time and a half pay, Sunday and Holidays are double time pay. The Carpenters build cement forms, break shacks, tube lock scaffolds, Patent Scaffold systems at these plants. These Carpenters are'nt even the highest paid craft. The Tube Welders for Erwin Construction make 27.00 hr. straight time pay. Plus 125.00 a day for hotel. 875.00 dollars for hotel added on to their hourly wages. 84 hours a week. Some work more. The Tube Welders take home over a 2000 dollar check a week, on the powerplant shutdowns. Erwin pays more in California. I have seen California, Oregon, Texas, Illionis, Massachusetts license plates at these plants. Some of these welders stay here in San Juan County 5 months in hotels and travel trailers. Yeah, the non union Erwin Tube Welders make more than Union Boilermakers.

Wow! Screw you Joe Shirley. "Lack of motivation." Man that really hurt. As a Navajo I'm really taken aback by that comment. What a motivational speaker he is!

HOGONE DWELLER wrote: San Juan College already has a program called IPOP that is geared to train people for the Energy fields. Industrial Process Operations Program, only thing is it accually is an accredited course and is geared to train anyone who has the commitment to go to school. There is no need to be so racially bias in the hiring if there are people who have the commitment to learn. Why is it OK for Navajos to discriminate but they cry the loudest if someone does it to them... Stop the hypocracy. Yes the IPOP maybe geared to train people for such workplaces BUT these WORKPLACES doesn't hire people such as myself. I earned my two AAS degrees through San Juan College hoping to have a career in the Energy Industry; here I am pushing pencil in an office AGAIN. Any job openings on the rez will ALWAYS have Favoritism and Nepotism. I feel that Four Corners Power Plant plays that role too. I am more than qualified to work there and yet ALWAYS turned away. It's sad to know that FCPP say they put their money into the IPOP at the college but yet they won't give people like me a chance for employment. Yet they hire people who have no college education and those that don't have a clue about the basic of how the power plant operates. The NN need to spend their money wisely; yes it's nice that they are trying to get people trained but AGAIN there's people like me who had long days, restless nights getting a college education to better ourselves but yet, we're not accepted for employment. Good luck to those who are getting the pre-apprenticeship, I hope you have a better chance at getting a job at the power plant.

Didn't you people in bordertowns wanted the NAVAJOS to return to the rez? You people are tired of us brownies so you people are trying everything you can to send us back to the reservation! We've always lived here and will do so in the future! Put up with us or move away from the area! Not that Desert Rock would rescue everyone. It would still pump a lot of money into the local bordertowns and into the pockets of bigots.

this has nothing to do with jobs, its about the kickbacks the unions well send back for the contract work on the rez. SJ college can do the work for less and keep the cost overhead down but with unions the cost well come out of our pockets in our bills...

Someone who is half indian, black, chinese is determined as half indian, balck and chinese, but someone who is half white is never assumed to be "white". You are right. THere is a different playbook which is like it or not designed to correct the actual day to day practice of discrimination. THe white guy would get picked all day if it were not for these rules while the minorities are busy catching up they need some rules to help them out. In actual practice, Navajo preference does not work--the white guy still gets hired anyway so at least for now there is not much to complain about.

You gotta be related to someone in Human Resouces,or a foreman. I've heard of Wet-backs (who were married to Navajo women) get hired and given training for Heavy Equipment Operators. I've seen my classmates who had difficulty in graduating High School get on only because they were related to Chet Perito. Thankfuly there is a program for the local Dine' to recieve training for livable income jobs. Everyone knows that the Az.Rez Jhonz get first priority in Fed. grant $$ for industrial job training(only to get fired for DWI).

I know people who got hired before they even finished the class's. They sent in resume and interviewed and were hired. Many were not hired because of attitude, education, or it was without a dought that when they showed up they were only there for a handout not to work. So i guess you fell into one of the not-able to work. So, maybe it was you.
