It was originally named "Hell's Neck" being a rowdy mining community. It was chartered in 1899 and when they applied for a Post Office, the Postal department refused to accept the "Hell" part of the name so it was shortened to "Neck City." The "Neck" part is because it is located not far from a neck in Spring River to the west of the town. I live there and that's the history that we have been told.
