Buyers Beware

Recently we stopped at a "stand" on the south edge of town by the discount fireworks trailer. There was a young lady there, claiming to be selling Nebraska grown cherries, peaches, and sweetcorn. When I asked where this produce came from all she could say was "Nebraska". Where in Nebraska are there peaches and sweetcorn ready at this time of year? She couldn't tell me.'And for good reason. The peaches came from a southern state. Deep south. The sweetcorn that was "picked fresh" that morning had dried out husks. It obviously wasn't fresh. One of the reasons there is no local sweet corn being offered is because there is no way it would be ready for at least another week or 2. Planting conditions weren't good enough for sweetcorn to have it ready now. It stayed cold for too long this spring. I couldn't care less who is selling these products. The stuff at WalMart looks just as good. I object to it being called fresh, and the misinformation of it being called "Nebraska Grown". What a farce.

Buyers Beware

Yes it is.
Just because Kimmel Orchards (Lied Center) has the stand up doesn't mean it's from Nebraska. Sweet corn just tasseled last week. That means 12 to 15 more days. There are no peaches ready in Nebraska yet. The cherries have been ripe for a while so I can believe that.

There are two girls that work that stand. Do you know which one you spoke with? One is blonde and the other is brunette and both are young - late teens or early 20's. Do you know which one told you that the corn was from Nebraska?

Would you mind identifying yourself? I think that being identified would give your words more credibility than those coming from an anonymous person. I'm not saying that I don't believe you. It's just that I went to that stand as a buyer and asked where the produce was from. The blonde girl working there told me the corn was from south Missouri and nothing was from Nebraska.

Call me a liar, slanderer, person with a grudge all you want. I don't care. The girl said she and the other girl were the only ones who have been in that stand? Not True. There was a young gentleman with brown hair that waited on my neighbor an hour earlier. He told him that everything was from Nebraska. That's why I stopped. At that time there was no sign. I was looking forward to some good Nebraska grown produce. Believe what you want. I'm done. I will no longer respond.

I sent my reporter to investigate and he visited the food stand. Without first identifying himself he asked about the produce. The blonde saleswoman clearly stated the produce was not from Nebraska. On one side I have people willing to go on the record with their actual true identities. On the other I have an anonymous person making an accusation. Consider the weight. I am not accusing you of being dishonest. It is merely a logical evaluation of the evidence on both sides. The only suspicious thing Brent uncovered was that the stand did not originally identify itself as being owned by Kimmel Orchard. In the end, since you are unwilling to go on the record with your true identity then your claim carries less weight. This is simply a reality of how things work here in the real world. If you are being honest, then have the courage to identify yourself. Truthful words will be appreciated and commended. If someone is willing to go on the record about the food stand falsifying information about the origins of the produce, I will make sure it is investigated and reported.
