Illegal Latino immigrants victimize Puerto Ricans, too

Full story: The Morning Call

Puerto Rico is known as the trampoline of the Caribbean. That's because people from Caribbean and Latin American nations use the island as an entry point to the United States.

I agree with you. There are too many of the on the island and that's wyhat crime has gone way up. The are taking the jobs away from the poor puertoricans that live there. But,the sadest part is that in many cases some of us help the get there legal stuff, treat them well. And at the end of it all, they always talk very bad about us. They are ungrateful y nosotros pendejos! There are back stabbers and they need to get out.

There are good hard working peaceful people that deserve to be in puerto rico and would fit in wonderfully with the culture of the island. but of course there are others that are bringing drugs and more destructive influences on the island that i wish would end up on a island of their own but i've wish that on some puerto ricans too. There are so many that are ruining it for the peaceful hardworking ones who deserve a beautiful island like puerto rico.

Jokersicc,

Dude or Dudette. First, there might be some idiots that do not like Mexicans, I am not one and many Puerto Ricans on the island accept many from many countries, including Mexicans who work and own businesses in Puerto Rico. Not every Puerto Rican is lazy. There are not many in your area that you can generalize, but I do agree there are many that are lazy…just like Mexicans, Cubans, Anglos, etc, etc. We might not pay Federal income tax on the island because the U.S. Congress has not incorporated the island just like they have not with Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands, but we all do pay Social Security taxes. We import 80% from the mainland (the States), putting money into the (American) our economy. Many serve in the U.S. Armed Forces that are from the island and here in the States. A Puerto Rican engineer helped develop the mechanical arm on the space shuttle. We have served in many positions in the national government and had an ambassador in the Sixties assigned by one of the U.S. Presidents. The last Surgeon General of the U.S., Vice Admiral Richard Henry Carmona is of Puerto Rican decent. I can go on and on, but my point is, we like Mexicans or any other group of people work very had. We are educated and have dumb people too. Like any group of people, there are lazy ones, but please do not generalize us or any other group, that is called stereotyping. When it comes to welfare or social help so what? Every unfortunate person is entitled to help. I do not agree with perpetuate continuous help, but I do believe we should help those that need it when times get hard. The island does not get the same amount of funds that the great majority of the States do, but that is the Congress’ doing not us. They started sending help back in the late 60s and have increased ever since. So, sit back and enjoy life and Ddn’t get bent of out shape.

Dimelo Boricua!!! Pa' Encima

Wow! It's amazing to read & feel the spectrum of concepts on the issue of other latinos who reside legally or illegally in Puerto Rico or the main land. I think many have to stop, think & remember that we all came from someone in our bloodline who migrated to this country for the same purposes & reasons of today. A better way of life & opportunities for all. We must look at each other w/no faults nor judgements and decide what & how can we be useful to one another to better our situation & the future of our youths as a Latino nation. Stop the put down, stop the arrogance, begin to place that energy together to help our people (All Latinos) advance in education, housing, health and life in general. We are increasing in numbers (population) and will be the number one minority group in this country. Lets stay strong & united so we can benefit in the future.

Very nicely said. Although we were discovered and invaded by basically pirates, we must not pursue Anger, Hate, and Violence. That does not means to be stupid. Represent and demand your respect. Let us all work together to better ourselves. We are taking over this nation; it is just a matter of some time. So let’s make it a better place for our future.

First of all, ever heard of chicanos? They arrived at the same time if not, before puertoricans. They fought in all the wars with us. Next time speak for yourself, not for Puertoricans. As for the comment that joker made, take a wild guess on who most of the organizers for the "Si se puede"protests in NY are from? Puerto Rico!!! including most of the people that WORK in the welfare and other goverment offices who are Bi-lingual tranlators and help mexicans, ecuadorians etc. Aguanta la lengua la proxima vez que criticas.

This comment is based on ignorance. Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico do not pay federal taxes because they are unable to vote in national elections. They have no power or real representation in Congress. "No taxation without representation" (the main reason for the American revolution). Perhaps you missed that part in American History class. Puerto Rico is part of the United States of America whether you wish it to be or not. It was invaded in 1898 by the United States and then ceded by the Spanish government in its treaty with the U.S. after the Spanish-American war ended. All Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens by an act of congress in 1917. They have paid the "blood tax", thousands have died in the various conflicts the U.S. has taken part in: WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. My father was a victim of the Vietnam war.

The Puerto Rican government receives substantially less federal monies than the 50 states and yet manages the island with its own local government and municipalities. They raise taxes locally to support social programs. Puerto Ricans do not receive welfare payments from the mainland, and support their own health care system islandwide. Do some research before you condemn.

The propensity toward laziness is universal on the U.S. mainland encompassing every ethnic group. As a hard-working Puerto Rican I see it everyday!
