Has anyone seen the commercials on the Lifetime Channel (29) for Steel Magnolias? The script is identical to the original, but all the actors are black. What gives with that since the movie is based on a true story, and all the real people are white?

I wonder if the Harlings gave their approval to this?

I sure they have and been thoroughly compensated, just like when it was turned into a play and later a movie. Don't worry your little white head about it. I am disappointed it will be set in Georgia. It should have stayed in Natchitoches. They obviously changed more than the color of the characters. Still interested to see the movie.

Is it just me, or does a movie advertised with an "all black cast" seem a little racist? Wonder what the reverse situation would look like?

Even though the fact was not advertised in promoting it, In the original movie,(1989) the main cast was all white. The extras were of different races, but that is nothing new or different in films. It blew my mind to see "battleaxe" women like Olympia Dukakais and Shirley McClaine play sweet doting grandmas, though. Miscast, much?

The movie was adapted from a screenplay written about a real family! The character of Shelby really existed and ...gasp...she was white, along with her relatives and friends!

I am not sure which movie you are referring to. The original Steel Magnolias had Olympia Dukakais and Shirley McClain in the cast, but they sure as hell were NOT "sweet doting grandmas".

Very true; however, this movie is based on real people and real facts, and it happens that the real people are white. I guess next we will have a remake of the movie "Red Tails" staring Robert Redford, Matt Damen, and Johnny Depp.

Oh, I get it. The human condition we all share regardless of race, is not real.
