accidents do happen but an 8 yr. riding along on an atv is just ridiculous unless its a kids bike with speed limiter on it--

So sad for the family. However, there are too many children going too fast with no thought of safety on these ATV's. We have them speeding up and down the street and no one seems to be able to stop them. Parents can't say no....

Speed limiters??? Kid's bike???? OK so you mandate that, what are you going to say when the next accident happens even though you have all of your safety improvements and laws in effect? Sorry, I've seen 8 year olds handle equipment that 28 year olds can't. With every endeavor there is the possibility of injury and death. You can not expect nor mandate a risk free life. That's life.

the youth was an experienced rider and had been riding for several years. the thing people should take away from this is that IF you are going to let a child ride they should wear a helmet but even a helmet cannot prevent death if you break your back or neck.....people should pray for the loss the family is feeling and not concentrate on the negative aspects!!!!

No matter what, parents have lost a child, and at Christmas makes it even harder. I can only pray for this family and the grief they are experiencing. May GOD help them during this awful tragedy..

this was a very sad and tragic event. the family along with the boy, the cousin, who was driving the atv are having a very hard time coping. they were going to fast and tried to turn when the atv flipped over and landed on poor Lawson. This was a very great family. So lets no put them down lets pray for them in this time of need and through this holiday season

I wonder why they put warning labels on ATVs NO one under the age of 16 and no passangers.I guess parents know best.

Yeah, lets put a 8 y/o on a ~500lb machine that can go 30+mph. Then when he kills him self "oh well, accidents happen!".....

Yeah and the mandate saved this kid's life.....laws restricting your freedom don't fix a thing.

By the way how many over 16 died in 4-wheeler accidents this past year? Maybe we should just mandate that no one can buy or use them. That's the "logic" of your position.

Last time I checked I never put an 8 year old on a 500# machine that can go 30+mph. Real smart argument you have there, Moron.

Shame on all of u who are casting judgement!!!! My all of ur glass houses be blessed and not cursed for such comments. A terrible loss has occurrd and my heart aches that such comments enter minds when there is such pain involved. May God bless u & may a tragedy never knock on ur doors. We should be lifting our prayers & hopes of happier times rather than trying to jump on high horses that won't always hold up.

How dare you cast judgement on me casting judgement. You're one mighty bold hypocrite. I've prayed for the family, have had my share of tradgety in my life and I'm sorry your heart aches BUT your heart and the family's loss were not the subject of my comments. Accidents and laws were. Keep up.

Katrina, I get what you are saying, but its worth exploring the situation in hopes that some other parent won't be suffering the same pain next week.

A few years back several states prosecuted some of those 'know best' parents who didn't put their kids in car seats - resulting in their child's death in what should have been a survivable accident. Back then, there were several people who, like you, said that the loss of a child was tragedy enough and we should focus on that and not prosecute the parents.

They missed the point - it's not about those parents, it's about the parents who can't be bothered to put their kid in a car seat - unless threatened with jail time. Sad to say, but if parents always knew best, we wouldn't need Child Protective Service.
