International Paper Announces Permanent Paper Machine Shutdown at Franklin and Downtime at Other Company Paper Mills
Approximately 210,000 tons of uncoated freesheet paper taken out of the company's U.S. paper mill system

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/-- International Paper (NYSE: IP) today announced the permanent shutdown of its No. 3 uncoated freesheet paper machine at its Franklin, Va., Mill. This will result in the permanent curtailment of the company's annual paper production capacity by approximately 150,000 tons of uncoated freesheet paper and affect approximately 50 employees. The plan targets November 23 to begin the shutdown. In addition, approximately 60,000 tons of lack of order downtime will be taken out of the company's U.S. uncoated freesheet paper mills during the fourth quarter.

"Because of the continuing decline of uncoated freesheet paper demand, we must reduce our capacity and announce this permanent machine shutdown," said Wayne Brafford, IP's senior vice president, Printing & Communications Papers. "Our company's commitment to optimize our mill operations to meet the needs of our customers made this difficult business decision necessary. The additional capacity reductions, as lack of order downtime, reflect the current economic weakness in our markets," added Brafford.

"We also understand this announcement will create uncertainty for employees, their families and the communities affected, especially in the Franklin area," said Brafford. "We will do all we can to assist them during the shutdown process and downtime period."

Hopefully they are only trying to reduce the production of some paper products, such as uncoated freesheet paper. How much of Campti's plant makes this product?

Boise Cascade gave walking papers to sixty people a couple of weeks ago. They were told to go file for unemployment.

I really don't forsee the mill having the temporary shutdown, also they make containerboard there, so i don't know if this relates to the free sheet paper or not, but what I do know is that, that place is not one to be able to just be shut down and restarted, i think that would cost more to have to shut it all down and then to restart it, with all the boilers and such they have. Plus the additional construction that has been going on there.

Is IP a unionized payroll?

My sympathies to the employees if they are laid off. I hope it's not for long.

I am here in Natchitoches to help. If I ran that company, there wouldn't be any layoffs. My personal credit score is less than desirable (a hell of a lot less, after I spent a huge forty dollars on a bottle of wine) but I am qualified to run a large company. I drink import beer.

the whole mill wont be shut down. their #1 paper machine and everything associated with it, which is pulp mill and chip yard operations. This is not an isolated temp closure they are doing it company wide which effects many states and several hundred employees and their families... it is also fact that charles cloud will be having a temp layoff at the same time as IP and notified his employees that there will be another temp layoff the last 2 weeks of this year.

yes they are union. I hope it's not too long too but I just worry that this is a precursor of things to come. If sales are down by that much , whats to say they dont require another temp shutdown, then another, then another..... I just cant help but look at the history of the plants these days and see that this is just the beginning not a fix it problem.

Yes and I heard there is more to come. I hate for anyone to lose their jobs. It is such an awful time for everyone to try to survie with the cost of everything. When you have no income that is awful. My prayers goes out to any of you that has lost their jobs. It has to get better.
I hate it for anyone that has children and are worried about how they are going to get Christmas.
Maybe we need to start a subject to help those families. One toy is better than nothing at all. It is time we take care of our people here.
