Oh, no: what terrible news. She was so talented, and so full of fun. She had a wicked sense of humor, and if you were in the front row at one of her performances, look out!--you became part of it. She always got her audience up on their feet, singing and dancing. It was because of Hurricane Katrina that she resettled here from New Orleans with her husband. I had no idea she was ill. She will be missed.

I always made sure to watch her performance at the jazz festival. The only thing more colorful than Mauve was her dresses. She will be missed and now she has joined that heavenly choir with all those great singers who have gone on before her.

I was fortunate enough to have played with Mauva, and for a lady who couldn't read music she shure could tell you what to play and how to sound. Mauva we will miss you very much, and the Natchitoches live music scene sure wont be the same without you.

Seattle misses the fabulous Mauva Belle too.
Below is the article that us published in the two major blues magazines for Seattle:
Mauva Belle, former Seattle Blues diva, has Moved On
Mauva Belle, dynamic and glamorous singer of blues, soul, and rhythm and blues, passed away in Louisiana on May 20th, after a fight with pancreatic cancer. She was 49 years old. For those of us lucky enough to remember her years in Seattle, this is a tragic loss, and cause for a flood of memories of her performances here, and her loving, indomitable spirit. Mauva blew into the Seattle music scene from her New Orleans hometown in 1995. At that time she had not sung professionally, but she had the gifts of a beautiful voice and the ability to make you feel deeply whatever she was singing, and she chose to develop those gifts here in our city. For five wonderful years she played exciting gigs at many Seattle venues, with many of the blues musicians who still share our lives. Anyone who was at those gigs will smile to remember her tight dresses, high heel shoes ("the higher, the better"), and her love for a celebration. She left us with her first CD, "38 Carat Gold", recorded in Seattle in 1999. In 2000 she and her new husband James left Seattle, went on tour in Italy, and then settled back in New Orleans, eventually buying their first home, which was sadly destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Her career has taken her from Seattle to Caribbean cruise ships, the New Orleans French Quarter, and most recently, to clubs and festivals in the Natchitoches Parish in Louisiana. Those who know her understand that she packed more life into her years than most people who live to be 90. Watch for news of a benefit that is being planned on July 25th to help her family with her medical expenses. In true Mauva style, it will be a soulful party.

I had the pleasure of playing the piano with my cousins' band Hot Water in which Mauva performed. I played a few nights with them in Nachitoches and I enjoyed it very much. The last night I played with them was also the last night I saw my grandmother dance while Mauva sang. Ms. Belle was a very hard worker, and a blessing for my cousins Katrice and Rainy boy. I also enjoyed accompanying her later at a party at Frieda girl's house. She had a beautiful voice and is now singing blues lullabies to the Baby Jesus. May her family find peace in knowing that she shared her talent in order to make other people happy.
