Workers making $30,000 will take a bigger hit on their pay than those earning $500,000 under new fiscal deal

.
Middle-class workers will take a bigger hit to their income proportionately than those earning between $200,000 and $500,000 under the new fiscal cliff deal, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

Earners in the latter group will pay an average 1.3 percent more - or an additional $2,711 - in taxes this year, while workers making between $30,000 and $200,000 will see their paychecks shrink by as much as 1.7 percent - or up to $1,784 - the D.C.-based think tank reported.

Overall, nearly 80 percent of households will pay more money to the federal government as a result of the fiscal cliff deal.

This article is accurate and yet very deceiving. There was not a tax increase on us poor people. Yet our take home pay will be less. Why, you ask? Because 2 years ago we were given a reprieve from paying 2% of our Social Security tax. It was part of a stimulus package. Social Security taxes were not reduced, we just got a 2 year break from paying them. Then for the entire 2 years and some more, Obama squawked about Social Security going broke and how something had to be done about that entitlement program. He offends me. When you pay into something for over 45 years as my husband and I have how can it be considered an entitlement program. If the federal government would quit borrowing from the Social Security Fund, money they have no means of paying back, maybe it wouldn't be so broke, but that is all for another discussion. This discussion is on tax increases, and those of us making under 250,000 did not experience a tax increase. Again, it was the expiration of a stimulus break, which we all knew would expire, if we were paying attention. In life we get what we pay for, if we pay no taxes we get no benefits.

Not really....I believe the more serious point is that we (the miiddle class) will pay more, and we simply can't afford the tax increase.

Meanwhile, the freeloaders can rock on....no changes. I'm sure they are ready to file with the IRS to receive their Earned Income Credit and Child Tax Credits. They usually receive large
IRS Checks. Take note....not refunds; this check is a gift from taxpayers for freeloading which is in addition to Food Stamps, Housing, Welfare, WIC, Medicaid, SSI, etc.

They have more disposable income than we do! I'm tired of supporting these people. We can't help those who refuse to help themselves.

Sounds good. Let's start with the $4,000,000,000 a year oil companies get from the government in the form of welfare.

At least they provide jobs and additional revenue in this state. Consider the number of your family and friends employed through the oil and gas industry. There is an enormous return to the economy through those employeed by these companies. Look at the advantages enjoyed by Caddo, DeSoto, Red River, and Sabine Parishes due to revenue and jobs from the Haynesville Shale.

Of couse, we can stop production, and move more production overseas. Foreign countries can reap the benefits while we increase taxes on the 50-55% of Americans towing the line for the entire country. Unemployment will rise significantly. Sound familar?

Why didn't the president start there? He extended tax cuts for corporations and raised taxes on the lower middle class. Why'd he do that?

first of all obama didn't raise taxes on the lower middle class. the TEMPORARY payroll taxcut he and the democrats enacted expired. Its that simple.

why didn't he cut corporate welfare? becuase he's no liberal socialist as many would like to believe but is by in large bought and paid for by the same corporations that own the republicans.

It may be that simple to you but to the people that will be paying more in taxes maybe not. You campaign on helping the middle class by raising taxes on the rich but then make no provision to protect that same group from tax increases. Seems like raising taxes. I like this president because he's perfect. If he raises taxes on the rich he right and if he gives them tax breaks and incentives he's still right. I do agree with you at least on the last part, he is bought and paid for.

if brooksires sells ice cream for $6.00 and then put it on sale for a week at $4.00 at the end of the week do they raise the price from what the ice cream should be? No, the price goes back to its original intended price. the discount you got was temporary. the same logic follows through with the TEMPORARY payroll tax holiday.

This sale lasted more than a week. How long would something need to stay on sale before someone considered it the normal price? When gas prices rise it is reported as an increase not a return to the high price it was before. People say gas went up again. People will say taxes went up, especially those people who were expecting the president to keep his promise to only raise taxes on the rich. I know there won't be a big backlash or a media firestorm like when a normal president allows taxes to rise but we will pay more just the same. Of course the best part is that spending also increased at about forty times the rate of revenues increase.

He is responsible for taking advantage of their ignorance to advance his agenda. I will not excuse the president because he claimed to be different and because of who he is people believed him. If those who supported him for two elections weren't so "dumb" (your word not mine) they would be outraged. I don't mind it myself because I knew he was a liar but for those who believed in "Hope and Change" it's really turned into just more of the same. Since we can't agree on anything else let's just agree that there will be less money in the pockets of the working people while the prices of food and necessities are poised to go through the roof.

you do know that the rollback of the payroll tax had NOTHING to do with the fiscal slope deal?

even if there was no fiscal cliff deal the payroll tax would have reverted back to its original rate.

your argument is just silly. right now i charge truckers $3.00 for a hummer. next week i plan of doing the same for $1.50. when i go back to charging $3.00 when i do so im not increasing the price of said hummer but the sale of the hummer is expering and those who got the reduced price hummer should be grateful.

and please all parties don't live up to their campaign slogan. remeber compassionate conservatism whihch was niether compassionate or conservative.

when Quigley ran for President of The Rainbow Riders he promised an annual ride to Fire Island but guess im still waiting to get busy in NYC but on the plus side he has reinstated cabbage and cornhole night.

I think it's silly you have to make fun of the original polabo in almost all of your post. Reminds me of response jr and response. I don't mind that you think my argument is silly because I think your unwavering defense of the president is just as silly. Regardless of why he allowed it to happen, intentional or not President Obama once again let down the people who believed in and supported him. If he were any other president, George H. Bush and his read my lips statement come to mind, he would be called out by the media and everyone else who's taxes went up. In a month or two the pres. may ride in like a knight in shinning armor and save us from a situation he created but until then the fact remains. Higher taxes and less money. I'm not asking you to like it just to admit it without the everybody else lies disclaimer. After four years the economy is no better, the environment is no better, peace is no closer, Gitmo is still open, big corporations are still getting their tax breaks, black unemployment is still climbing along with women and the young, and the president is no closer to deserving his Nobel Peace Prize or his two man of the year awards than he was when he received them. Hail to the Chief.
