Someone please tell me why remaking a movie and changing only the entire casts race is not racist? I am sincere. Yes all raves, nationalities, genders, etc have faced the same ups and downs but why not make a new script? I am trying really hard to understand how this isn't a race thing.

Taking a true story of a real family and changing the race? Why? What other explanation could there be other RACISM??

There is the BIG reason behind the remake. As I've stated before, this is Harling's only big 'hit'. He gave permission for the remake for money,no other reason.

It was a cute chick flick and it did a lot for Natchitoches, apparently. The only chick flicks I've seen really work with a black female ensemble cast are stories with more substance, and an edge, to showcase the strength and resilience of the black woman Examples:

1. Waiting To Exhale
2. The Color Purple

That doesn't explain what he was propositioned in the first place. Why would anyone think that remaking this particular film and putting an all black cast in was necessary?

I can't really speak to why he was approached, because I really don't know. It sounds as if you have some ideas about it, though. The play was an intellectual property of which he was owner. This is what he decided to do with his property. I do not believe any coercion was involved. He is an adult. He was free to accept or reject the proposition, as you put it.

he did not direct this version, it wasn't his idea to change the cast. Who's idea was it and what was the motivation? Of course it's all speculation but I speculate it was racial and why then is it okay for SOME people to do this kind of thing but no OTHERS?

He may have signed over creative control to the production company. If he was dealing with Harpo Productions, that's probably how it did go down. Speculation, as you say. Once he gave his consent, the motivation for making the movie the way it was made becomes a moot point.JS. Apparently the prospect of the movie being remade with a black cast did not concern him enough to say,

"No Deal"

Well, I wish he would have said NO DEAL, but i do understand the money thing-just hope he needed the money after seeing them changing it so drastically. Yes, in my opinion, changing the race of the cast is a drastic change. I grew up loving that movie. The remake will NEVER be as good as the original. Yep, I'm making a judgement before seeing the remake. Don't know if I even want to see the remake. Maybe I will just so I can have an honest comparison. I'll give it an honest shot. Although, what the movie is about, can happen in any race; changing the race of the cast takes away the originality. I don't know the history behind it but I'm assuming this was based on a white family. But of course, and unfortunately, there are blacks who compete and can't stand for those whites to top them off on anything. It's an all time fav of a lot of people. I'm upset about it honestly, even if the race had stayed the same. A movie like that can never be overtaken by the remake. I hope he sold it for more than the $80 million he made to begin with, and I hope it makes nothing near half of that ($80 million).

You keep going back to "him" this isn't about him it's about the racist biggots who wanted another "all black cast " movie but will be the first to cry racism if Madea or Big Momma's House was changed and advertised as an "all white cast". Can you defend that? Can you tell me that it wasn't about race? That's all I'm asking, why the hypocrisy?

I was referring to "him" only bc of the money that was made from it. I'm actually aggreeing with you. No I can't explain. The only thing I can say is it is pure jealousy. There again, when it comes out and the dollar signs add up to not even half of the original dollar amount, then it's going to sink them further into jealousy and hate, and let's add embarrassment. I actually can't wait; maybe this will shut those blacks down and make them realize they're not "all that" like they think.

Ihave to disagree. The remake sucked. What's a waste of time to watch it. I don't know why all the hype. The remake wouldn't make a pimple on the ass or the original steel magnolias.

BS! Then put the race card down. It was obviously meant for a white cast. It's the DECENT SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY that makes the movie great, as well as the white cast, role play (script), and the fact that it's based on a real life event in a families' life. That's what's called ORIGINALITY! Sorry, the black folks can't have this one. Go back to The Color Purple, which is a great movie!
I'll join you on another forum if you want to discuss racism. All I request is that we do it tomorrow. I'm pretty bumbed out from my long day.

U can just kiss my high yella a**, y'all can have the color purple, really I'm not even about to go there with u! What u think of us black folks as savages with no hospitality, sorry massa only u know how to tell us savages how to behave! Yeah right they should have used every color don't sit there and act like the whites only represent Louisiana! We are very hospitable no matter what the color of our skin, u can tell a southerner and if u think an all white cast is what makes a movie original your sadly mistaken Hun! But u know that certain white folks not all, people like u need the cast to be white in order to relate to what the characters are going through! Well u need to go to the KKK sun dance festival so u already no what to expect, no n*****s as u wish! But Lifetime isn't racist so change the station!

The question is still unanswered, can you not read or is it avoidance because you know it makes no sense and its a double standard???

@ Creole- I don't think it takes an all white cast to make a movie original-it's how it was from the beginning. The writer chose white southern folks.
Now from the top. I don't kiss a$$, I whoop a$$!
I never said only whites represent Louisiana, Hun!
Your hospitality is ghetto-which takes away from the originality of the movie-DUH! They weren't ghetto-which is why the remake will be CRAP with an all black cast. It will be hilarious to see this all black cast speak as us decent white southerners do. Not all people like the "flava" that blacks seem to dish out everywhere they go; and it damn sure doesn't make everything better.
You don't know me (at all) to say what I need in order to relate with a topic, "or (a) character(s)".
I will only go to the KKK sun dance festival to celebrate the loss of the low life, ghetto, hoodlums, who take offense of a white person standing strong. So pi$$ on you!
You sound like Malcolm X, so go cry on his grave!
