I keep reading these discussions...but no one is trying to be proactive. What can we do? Yes, we should embrace our culture. Yes, Dr. King faught for us to be here. But...we are Africans living in America. It's so real, so real. You have to know this. These "hot ghetto messes," just have no confidence. Your entire life you've been the minority, you've dealt with ignorance from every race, you've faced an identity crisis, you've been taught that every thing African is everything you don't want to be. BLACK people are different, our souls are so different.

But why is it that we're the only race that chooses to expose everything. In the form of rap, to film, to now BET. Imagine being a young white child who never has interacted with black people. Your only impression is what you see on BET, don't you have a right to assume that ALL BLACKS ARE IGNORANT, so BET is so hurting the black community. BET has got to do better, I am disgusted, and I'm so sick of listening to all this talk- it's self-hate in every since of the word. You have to either submit to that stereotype or don't. If you choose to talk about it and live your life in opposition to the stereotype, how do you plan on making a difference, because you are responsible, once you've acknowledged that these are your people.

I believe that some of us are missing the point. It is not about the style of dress or the locks. It is about the exploitation of the Black experience. Where is the positive images? Where is the self pride? Why must all Black Americans be defined by a commoditized stereotype? What has happened to BET? Has it become the modern day minstrel stage? This show will do nothing, but continue to exploit Black people. We all need to take responsibility for our community, whether we live in it, or if we have moved away from it. Take a look at the negative things and try to correct them, and make the community better for the generations to come.

I feel that instead of ceasing much of what is considered ghetto behavior, society needs to accept it as our own culture. A lot of things america look at as ghetto isn't negative or demeaning, its just because its prevalent in our communities its considered wrong. Gold teeth are in no way negative, its just a form of jewlery that was embraced by us. Why should our fashions be considered tasteless or wrong? I've seen pics on that website of just a black person posing in a picture, wearing clothes that is normal in african american communities, be labled as a hot ghetto mess. Why? Because that's our style? I feel this is what needs to change. The way the world views our culture is the problem. I've got dreads, tattoos, and golds. Based on the stereotype associated with my style, I shouldn't even be able to type this comment. I'm a clerk of the courts, and drive a drop top benz. And if seen on the streets, I would be just another hot ghetto mess.
I find it quite disturbing how we continually redefine history to accomadate and explain away behavior paterns in the community. Couple errs in your presumptions.
1) Ghetto, Urban and culture are seperate from race (too often intertwined) and what you may deem "our" culture in its origins is really an endemic behavior and culture identity of the southern white who enslaved us.
2)It is not prevelant in our communites, it is an expression of a sub set of black america, which I believe again have no way of putting current behavior and cultural patterns into their proper historical perspective. Gold teeth are not jewelry, they we're our expression of wealth to cover up for poor dental care in our poverty.(similiar to adults purchasing braces because our parents could not afford proper dental care), tattos are expression again of the culture more closely associated with criminal and incarceration behaviors (dreds are more of an offshoot of the incarcerated black mans inability to access a comb while in jail)

So, am I understanding correctly that you are yet once again putting the responsibility of the actions of young black youth on slave owners hundreds of years ago? People they have no first hand knowledge of. Ghetto is, like it or not, associated with the black race as well as hillbilly and/or redneck is with the white race. But how you choose to present yourself has nothing to do with your great-great-great grandmothers "southern white owner".

you make my point exactly, hillbilly, redneck and modern urban culture are all very closely related if not direct descendants. I am not blaming the southern white, I'm telling you that your culture is white.

My culture is white and it does not include dreds, gold teeth, or other "tell-tell" signs.....this is a good example of the ebonics controversy from a few years back. I suppose that because the slave owners did not educate their slaves in the same manner(if at all) as their white peers then that explains why they speak in such a manner. Could it not be that ebonics exists because at some point there were some that were just too lazy to learn proper grammar and decided that proper grammar was "suppressing" them in the way slavery did? In my opinion the biggest thing holding black people back is BLACK people. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are the two biggest racists I have ever seen. If they did not keep the racism alive then they would be out of a job. Wouldn't it be a better society if everyone accepted responsibility for their own actions and decisions instead of saying "I do it b/c of what happened 100 years ago"?

My culture is AMERICAN. My speech is AMERICAN. The cut of my hair is AMERICAN. My dental restorations are AMERICAN. My ancestors were Irish and English serfs. I don't go around in a Tartan Kilt or carry a Shillelagh. I do not hate the British Aristocracy who suppressed my ancestors. I eat soul food. I eat Italian food. I eat Mediterranean food. I love Chinese food. Every Friday I have Mexican food. Latkes, bagels and Lox are a treat I enjoy.

I notice how well Vietnamese immigrants have done in America. I notice how well Nigerian or English born blacks do here. And I applaud and take note of how easily American born blacks thrive when they embrace American values of private property and personal responsibility and throw off their own chains of self imposed isolation and segregation from the AMERICAN (not white) system of values. I welcome with open arms my black AMERICAN brothers who accept AMERICAN values and abandon their rant that keeps others of them enslaved by their own self destructive choices.

I apologize for the white culture comment...you are very much correct in saying our American culture. My point is the way I dress, eat and/or talk is not because of anything someone did over 200 years ago.

On BET's "We Got to Do Better" AKA "Hot Ghetto Mess", Charlie Murphy complains that Bling is one of the reasons black people do not own houses or have mutual funds but when the camera returns to him he points at the camera while wearing a giant diamond ring. Funny!!
