another hot ghetto mess

I feel that instead of ceasing much of what is considered ghetto behavior, society needs to accept it as our own culture. A lot of things america look at as ghetto isn't negative or demeaning, its just because its prevalent in our communities its considered wrong. Gold teeth are in no way negative, its just a form of jewlery that was embraced by us. Why should our fashions be considered tasteless or wrong? I've seen pics on that website of just a black person posing in a picture, wearing clothes that is normal in african american communities, be labled as a hot ghetto mess. Why? Because that's our style? I feel this is what needs to change. The way the world views our culture is the problem. I've got dreads, tattoos, and golds. Based on the stereotype associated with my style, I shouldn't even be able to type this comment. I'm a clerk of the courts, and drive a drop top benz. And if seen on the streets, I would be just another hot ghetto mess.

I understand Sylvia Morrow is forming a Bi-Racial Commission. Anyone know anything about that? How will it work? What will it do?

I agree with Anthony and further, I think we need to take this very seriously. We are dangerously close to becoming an objectionable caricature rather than a culture. And, all God's dangers ain't a white man...sometimes, it's us. We really do need to do better...in making choices...understanding who we are...and who we need to be for our children.

BET has come under great attack from black groups, bloggers, and web sites for the show.

The show was initially titled Hot Ghetto Mess and BET changed the name to try to dampen outrage at the show. BET does not even mention the show on theie web site. A sign that they know it will have a very short life.

Brother, why can't we identify ourselves first and foremost as Americans. MLK and others fought and died to integrate us into the American mainstream. We now CHOOSE to estrange ourselves from the mainstream of America by pledging our allegiance to a destructive and demeaning sub-culture. I for one do not choose to go in that direction. And those of us who do are CHOOSING voluntariy to subjugate themselves.

“What Black Men Think” is a thought-provoking documentary that you should try to see. It paints an enlightening portrait of African-American males by employing some rather surprising raw statistics to suggest that we all reconsider some commonly-held miss-beliefs about brothers.

subjugate... that's a good word.
I as a Natchitoches-American want equal rights. I don't want to be be treated differenly from main stream Americans. Just because our school teachers are underpaid and didnt help me get no education like I should have got is no reason to make me stand in line at the grocery store. I also think I should not be ticketed every time the police see me do a rolling stop. I feel they are profiling me because they know I'm a Natchitoches-American. I was in New York just last week standing in line for the Peoples Court. I was asked to step to the rear of the line because of my race. Security asked me to step out of the line and show some ID. He said he had a complaint of a Natchitoches-American using offensive language. I also was stripped searched at the airport. They told me they had reason to believe I was holding a stale meatpie and I could not board the plane because of the damage it could do to the engines if it were to come loose from my pocket. They finally let me board when all they could find was three Zwolle Tamales.
It's unfair. I want to start a chaper of the NaNa's here. National Association of Natchitoches-Americans

That is correct that mlk fought to have us become a part of society, but what I'm saying is why is urban style wrong? Every culture got their own forms of expressing theirselves, but they are not looked down upon the same way as when somebody like me smile for example, and then people automatically make assumptions. Should we stop eating soul food now since we gotta merge with the rest of america? I mean we don't have to resort to eating souse no more, or a lot of things for that matter because we can eat more than the scraps. Should everybody in the us eat one style of food, listen to one style of music, wear one style of clothes? No, we all got our differences for a reason...bling bling is in the dictionary. I don't even say that shit but it shows that somebody else think that maybe what we do and say could be apart of society too.

"One for all, all for one" was the Three Musketeers. America is "United we stand, divided we fall."

Urban style isn't necessarily wrong, it's just not always appropriate.
