Because i looked on http://www.harlandc.com/harlan_inmate_list.ht... (shows who is in jail -past and present- and she is not on there now but the other doctor is. I wonder if that doctor came up with the 1 million dollar bond or what, maybe a glitch on that website but it should be there because it will show past arrests even if it happened 5 years ago.

Does anyone know?

Nashville doctors Visuvalingam Vilvarajah and Mireille Lalanne’s $5 million bonds were lowered in Harlan Circuit Court on Thursday on charges that include engaging in organized crime — a criminal syndicate.

Bond reduction hearings were held with testimony heard from Vilvarajah’s daughter and Lalanne’s son, who’s in the U.S. Army.

Lalanne’s attorney Paul Bruno submitted two exhibits to the court, including a letter from the Tennessee Department of Health citing that Lalanne had never been disciplined in Tennessee.

Bruno proposed that Lalanne’s bond be reduced to $100,000.

Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Sherif Guindi opposed the bond being lowered to that amount.

Harlan Circuit Court Judge Russell Alred agreed to lower Lalanne’s bond to $400,000 with certain restrictions, which included that she surrender her passport and that he receive something in writing that she will not practice medicine while the case is pending.

Alred also agreed to reduce Vilvarajah’s bond, but only to $1 million due to his criminal history. Alred said the same restrictions apply to him as well regarding his passport and practicing medicine.

The couple have been incarcerated in the Harlan County Detention Center since Feb. 16, when they were transported to Harlan County from a Nashville jail by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office.

They were arraigned Feb. 17 by Alred on three counts of engaging in organized crime and one count each of second-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.

The couple came under investigation by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office after sheriff Marvin Lipfird said a large number people allegedly engaging in illegal drug activity in the county had been prescribed narcotics from the doctors at their Nashville office. It is also alleged that the couple wrote narcotic prescriptions to a Harlan woman who gave birth to a child who was drug addicted.

Vilvarajah, 64, lost his license in the late 1980s while he served a second-degree murder sentence, but Tennessee regulators later reinstated it.

Vilvarajah surrendered his Tennessee license to practice medicine in 1989 after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to the 1986 killings of his wife and her mother.

Vilvarajah pleaded guilty two years later to second-degree murder and gave up the medical license because he had a felony conviction.

He was released on parole in 1993, and the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners reinstated his medical license with some restrictions that same year.

A pre-trial conference in the Harlan case has been set for April 2.

3/4/09 Would like to get an update on these doctors...I wonder if charges are coming in Nashville also. Dr. Mi Mi is a kind person and should not be prosecuted in the same court with Dr. V. In my opinion, he was only in it for the Money!
When you call their office now in Nashville the calls are automatically forwarded to Top Flight Medical Group.

I know both of them well, he was always a complete a-hole, she was alittle bit kinder but seemed scared of him. I went to her from 1994 till 2002 when he joined her practice it became more than apparent it was a gang bang drug center. Everyone in the waitiing room went from mother's there for weight loss, to hip hop tatoo gangsters. They both always only took credit or cash they would never give you the paperwork to fine for insurance.

They also forced everyone to take a B 12 shot, and he was very threatening, also rumors of him exchanging drugs for sex. They mainly supplied some of the RX's from their own in house pharmacy. Everyone there knew the score, he was extremely mean spirited... hope they both get what they deserve. He was her ex-husband, she was remarried to a guy that lives in Ft Lauderdale area. She has a house in McGavock Farms, sold it and bought a condo at Forrest Crossings, and was communicating from Ft Lauderdale to Nashville other other weekend. nothing about that appears anywhere in the story...

anyone have any updates, she had 2 sons he had one daughter, his daughter was as naasty and mean as he was... apple does not fall from the tree.

it appears by the harlan county jail records neither are currently incarcated, how can a doctor that killed his wife and mother in law, also be arrested for drug trafficing, organized crime, etc not be in jail, anyone know when they are set for trial?? interesting, also interesting is that nothing ever mentiones that the 2 doctors were ex husband and wife.

I knew the doctors also. He had a weight loss clinic in GA for awhile and I only knew her when she was in weight loss in Nashville near Baptist Hospital. I wish they had stuck to weight loss. I need to lose weight again and there is no one in Nashville doing a clinic.
But I was also wondering what happened to their trial and court case.

Doctors give up $1M in drug case

Nashville doctors Visuvalingam Vilvarajah and Mireille Lalanne entered a guilty plea Monday in Harlan Circuit Court, and part of their agreement included giving up $1 million of their bond money.

The doctors pleaded guilty to an amended charge of facilitation to trafficking a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor. The sentence will be for 11 months, which is probated for four months.

In March, the doctors’ bonds were lowered from $5 million on charges that include engaging in organized crime — a criminal syndicate.

During the bond reduction hearing, Harlan Circuit Court Judge Russell Alred agreed to lower Lalanne’s bond to $400,000 with certain restrictions, which included she surrender her passport and he receive something in writing that she will not practice medicine while the case is pending.

Alred also agreed to reduce Vilvarajah’s bond, but only to $1 million due to his criminal history. Alred said the same restrictions apply to him as well regarding his passport and practicing medicine.

The couple came under investigation by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office after Sheriff Marvin Lipfird said a large number of people engaging in illegal drug activity in the county had been prescribed narcotics from the doctors at their Nashville office. Lipfird also stated that the couple wrote narcotic prescriptions to a Harlan woman who gave birth to a child who was drug addicted.

Here is more
Commonwealth Attorney Henry Johnson said Monday during a press conference that they are not getting additional jail time, however they gave up a million dollars that they had up as bonds.

“Half of that is to go to the fiscal court for use in alleviating drug abuse in Harlan County with the use being subject by the approval of the circuit judge,” Johnson said.“The other $500,000 was straight assets forfeiture.”

Johnson said as proceeds of drug trafficking those funds come under statute, which is 85 percent of that goes to the sheriff’s office for use of law enforcement purposes and 15 percent is credited to the commonwealth attorney’s office. The 15 percent is actually sent to Frankfort to the attorney general’s office to be placed in a trust fund there they have for all asset forfeitures. Johnson said he could submit things for approval to spend that money.

“Some of the considerations taken into account in reaching this plea was that we didn’t realize when we started how intense it was going to be and as far as the work that was required,” Johnson said.“It was really going to tie us up for years if we took everything to trial and that was one of the considerations because we have a lot of cases anyway and this was taking up a lot of time and resources.

There are six attorneys defending the two doctors — three from Nashville and three from Kentucky.”
Johnson said the doctors also had to agree as part of their plea deal to not write controlled substances for anyone in Harlan County again.

“Right now, they can’t write prescriptions because as part of their bond they surrendered their DEA license and they had to reapply for that, and it is discretionary with the DEA whether they get it back or not, and it takes a long time to go through that process,” Johnson said.“Secondly, the medical license board in Tennessee has proceedings pending against them, and they were using whatever information we have generated here in Harlan County as part of that proceeding.”
Johnson said he thought Alred’s reaction to the plea agreement in court Monday was positive.

“He (Alred) said he thought it was a good resolution of the case,” Johnson said.

More

According to the sentence judgment, the doctors had to give up $500,000 each as part of the plea agreement. The first $500,000 will be forfeited as illegal trafficking drug proceeds, and the other half of the million dollars is to be donated to Harlan Fiscal Court, designated for drug abuse prevention through youth activities and facilities. An order in the case also states that the funds donated to fiscal court will be subject to approval of the judge of Harlan Circuit Court on how they are used.

Harlan County Judge-Executive Joe Grieshop said no decisions had been made at this time on how the money will be used. He said it will be brought before the fiscal court members at their next meeting on Jan. 19. 2010

Alred said Monday night that it is his desire that the money be used for a water park for the youth in the county.

“I would like for the children and young adults have somewhere nice to go instead of traveling to Barbourville and Williamsburg to a water park,” Alred said.“The children and teenagers in this county need something like this to keep them occupied in the summer and away from thoughts of drug abuse when they have too much idle time.”

Alred also said a water park could create 50-plus jobs for the county.
Johnson said he’s not sure how the public will react to the plea agreement.

“Some people, when they look at a plea agreement, they only look at what they would like and in any kind of plea process we do not have to look at what you would like or you know what I want. You have to look at what can I get or if I go to trial what will happen,” Johnson said.“What might happen is it’s a balancing of risk and hope, and you have to look at it like that. You have to step back and not be emotional about it, but you have to look at here’s what I risk if I go to trial.”

Johnson said he believes a jury would have convicted them.

Lipfird said he’s going to continue the fight.

“We’re not going to stop going after others,” Lipfird said.

Johnson said after the arrest of the doctors people were scrambling looking for pills.

“A lot times we feel as far as fighting the drugs like we’re trying hold back the flood or something,” Johnson said.

“That’s all we can do is try to hold back the flood. I wish I had a magic wand to cure the drug problem.”

Lipfird said the sheriff’s office has been consistent in fighting the drug problem since he took office.

“Naturally, I wanted, and this comes from the police side of things, I wanted full maximum sentence — I mean the whole nine yards. You have to be realistic though. You can’t live in a dream world and expect everything to go the way you want it,” Lipfird said.“Like Henry said, we objectively and honestly laid out everything, and we feel as though it is a pretty fair resolution to the case overall.”

Sharon do YOU know what has happened since the arrest? Are they practicing again? I think both of them are great. Dr. V may have seemed harsh but I've seen him smirk a little and give a little smile here and there and Dr. Mimi is an absolute love.

I also worked for them. Dr. Mimi is a dear woman, and I enjoyed working for her. Dr Vil is something else, when I learned he was going to start working out of the Nashville office, and leave the Knoxville office, I put in notice and never looked back. In my opinion he is an evil little man. And who ever said he was in it for the money must know him. He should have issues with the IRS also because he made the employees pay his part of payroll taxes. I got a job for less money after leaving, and brought home more. I can't remember the name of the man she was engaged to, but he was wonderful, and when she met him she just glowed. Her boys (I'm sure men now) were good boys, and I'm glad I had the chance to know her, and them. I could have lived my life without ever knowing that evil little maggot (Dr Vil), and never missed anything. The office was there to make money. If it turned into a gangbang anything, it was after 2000.
