In regards to the recent T.V. 3 I-Team Investigative report, it is apparent that the serious problems at this taxpayer-funded SNF have a common denominator, the nursing department. As a taxpayer and possible future client of such a facility I am concerned and mortified that the Director of Nursing has not been held accountable and fired for the continued lack of quality care, mistakes and unprofessionalism that run rampant at this nursing home. It won't matter one iota how many in-service trainings are conducted, or fines issued by the State of Michigan if the rotten 'core' of the problem remains in place. Thornapple Manor needs to hold it's upper management accountable and responsible for the serious inadequacies and failings they are being fined for by the State. The Director of the nursing department/staff is ultimately responsible for these failings and the citizens of Barry County deserve better than they are getting. Fire the Director of Nursing and give the taxpayers the quality care they paid for! Until then, I would not feel safe in recommending Thornapple Manor to anyone.
Hey DOC!!! You are a real piece of work and pretty darned full of yourself.
People like you just piss me off. You start this thing and think you are anonymous and you are NOT! You should be ashamed of yourself. You couldn't have YOUR way, so you decided to throw a baby tantrum.
Now, You have no right to put the entire blame of this on the DON! Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder towards HER for some other reason.
You are the one who started all of this and I sure hope that you are NEVER a resident there because we are very disappointed in YOU.

The state just cleared the Manor of one of the three infractions. and issued three new ones. Go figure. State needs to come in and clean out all the top brass and put in news ones that will clean the place up.

My Gosh...Who ARE YOU? When you only know part of the story, yet have such a self righteous point of view. WHO is to say that the STATE is all on the up and up? We have a bunch of dumb women who walk around like they have sticks up their butts, with their paper work and nametags, trying to seem so important.
TM is a great place with a majority of caring staff!

I agree the majority of the staff cares and do a great job, but Jim, Jackie, and Rita need to be replaced along with the few who are there for the money only. I do work there and know whats going on.

Quote from WBCH News: THORNAPPLE MANOR, AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY IN HASTINGS, IS STILL NOT ADMITTING PATIENTS AFTER HALTING ADMISSIONS IN LATE OCTOBER. THE FACILITY RECEIVED THREE CITATIONS FROM MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY HEALTH IN JULY, WITH ONE CLEARED AND THE OTHER TWO SUBECT TO A RESURVEY WITHIN 60 DAYS. IF THE CITATIONS ISSUED BY THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT WERE NOT CLEARED BY OCT. 30, PATIENTS ADMITTED AFTER THAT DATE WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY OF THE SERVICES THEY RECEIVED FOR AS LONG AS THEY WERE THERE, DIRECTOR OF THE FACILITY JIM DEYOUNG SAID. REGULATIONS REQUIRE THE CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES TO IMPOSE A DENIAL OF PAYMENT FOR NEW ADMISSIONS IF CITATIONS CANNOT BE RESOLVED IN THREE MONTHS.

Terminating employees nearing fully-vested retirement age is an old and very sad fact of corporate life in some entities. I have no way of knowing how much their seniority had to do with the terminations or, in fact, if there actually were any. However, I did have an uncle who worked 24 years, 11 months, and 14 days for Grand Trunk Railroad and was terminated two weeks before he was eligible for (ANY) pension...he had no pension benefit after having been an excellent employee all those years but wowie did GTW RR save a lot of money. It still makes me angry...and makes me appreciate even more the employer I had who allowed me to take six months of unpaid sick-leave time to make it to my ten years and receive not only my pension (vested at 5 years), but the medical insurance. The good, bad and ugly exist in every industry and enterprise.

Really? Well....why the anonymity?
If you AGREE with what you think, tell people, stand up and say it! Don't hide behind a screen.

I find it appalling that 7 staff members at Thornapple Manor were fired simply for being within 3 months of being vested for 10 years of service and therefore being eligible for full retirement benefits. Resident safety and well being are put at risk by replacing experienced, caring and loyal employees with someone right off the street simply because they're cheaper to pay. I would NEVER send a loved one to that facility due to their cavalier treatment of employees. No wonder Michigan is in such a financial mess!
The Manor has been treating it's employees badly for well over a year. In September when the state started cracking down they were firing the CNA's with little to no experience to appease the state and avoid looking bad to the community.

Unlike others on here, I do not think that people should use their real name. Prospective employers Google applicants names and even a well-deserved complaint against a current or former employer could cost you a prospective job. That being said, I do have an opinion on Thornapple Manor (TAM), and it is based upon facts and experience. My daughter was a CNA at TAM. She was well respected by her co-workers (CNA's, nurses, dietary, etc.) and the residents. I know this is fact because I recently was a rehab resident of TAM for a short time, and everyone told me how much they like working with my daughter, what a great CNA she was, and how much she was missed. After my stay there (released yesterday), I must say that the STAFF is fabulous! I received excellent care from the nurses, CNA's and rehab. Becky in dietary is so sweet. But, I don't think the problems with management will end because Jim's retirement party was last week!(the face cake was a bit much) My children became friends with a troubled young man at our Church. Last year that young man stole a gun from our house and committed suicide with it. My daughter was the last person to see him alive. Though she was hysterical over receiving the phone call, she was still going to go into work, because she had missed 2 days the week before due to illness (with a doctor's note). Then, the police called. They wanted to question her...to make sure she didn't assist him in some way with the suicide of all crazy things! She told the police that she had to be to work within the hour and asked if it could wait until the next day (she worked 2nd shift). She was told "No", so she had to call in at the last minute. The police were delayed and didn't show up until around 7pm, so it would have been too late for her to go in even for half of her shift. She was fired for it, AND TAM fought her unemployment! The policeman even wrote a letter of explanation. It did nothing to change her firing. When the case came before the unemployment judge, the judge was appalled. They said that TAM should be "ashamed" for their actions, and they wish they could make TAM pay extra for putting my daughter through this nonsense. They also told my daughter that she should get an attorney and "sue the pants off of TAM" because TAM was discriminating.(They let others have emergency time off). When TAM tried to argue, the judge said: "if this isn't an emergency, I don't know what IS"! Her dad and I would have been happy to pay for the attorney. But, my daughter got a job right away, and didn't want to keep reliving the traumatic death of this young man over and over. All of this made me worry about going there for my rehab, but my daughter assured me that the STAFF was great, and I would be treated well. She was right. I've been a resident at Eaton for rehab, and they were good. But, TAM was great!(well, I wasn't crazy about one CNA, but I'm not going to complain :-) Unfortunately, I don't think that getting a new director will fix the problem there. Until some of Jim's other cronies (like the D.O.N. and others on the brochure) are gone, other great employees jobs are in danger, too. Fortunately, my daughter now works for a large hospital in a much larger town than Hastings where there are more levels of power, and a small town "big-shot" getting their panties in a knot isn't going to get you fired.
