Self righteous tonight, aren't we Bob? Is there anyone that you do not want to fire (Sampson), dismantle (Pacers), or guilt trip into resigning (Dungy)? Please write a column about how badly The Star needs to clean house. Place the name "Kravitz" at the top of the list. That should be an entertaining paradox of sorts.

IU, are you listening? Get rid of him now!!!!!! And Greenspan.

Maybe RMK would like to try being an AD. We are once again humiliated.

We have great athletes this year, but a great program takes more than athletes.

It takes commitment on the part of the entire university.

I am a Purdue fan and I take no joy in the mess at IU. Hiring and sticking with Sampson was and is a mistake. I am looking forward to seeing the rivalry like it once was when we had men of integrity at the head coaching job; Knight and Keady. I think Purdue has one in Painter and now it is time for IU to right the ship and get rid of this guy.

TOTALLY AGREE! IU HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO START OVER. AS I AM AN IU GRAD, I MUST ADMIT PURDUE IS DOING IT THE RIGHT WAY WHILE IU HAS FALLEN HAS CHOSEN THE LOW ROAD.

Greenspan needs to go, period. But anyone who has spent any time in just about any university will affirm that college administrators are never held accountable for their bad decisions as they would in private industry. Many of them wouldn't last a year in private industry without being dismissed for lack of competence. Plus the arrogance of an "arm of the state" such as IU unlawfully telling someone that the couldn't wear a "Bring Bobby Back" shirt is also typical. These people have no boundries which they respect. The shirt wasn't obscene. They just didn't like the valid message, so they felt they has every right to suppress it. As any college student. There is no free speech on our campuses. If you don't follow the "party-line" you are punished.

Bob....while not way off the mark....is really just tuting his own "I never liked Sampson " horn. Maybe he should go, or maybe Kravitz should eat a cows bum hole.
For you and Flipper: Sampson was hired with all the cheating baggage from Oklahoma, proclaimed his innocence and then went right out and cheated again. Now IU is going to take a hit for that cheating with reduced scholarships and being barred from post season. And you both b**** about Kravitz writing the truth about the matter. Sampson has to go or the penalties will be more severe and the kids will pay for something they are not responsible for!!

I would imagine that Bob Knight is getting a good chuckle out of reading all this news.

Ohh ... the old days of Coach Knight.

I am not suggesting that Coach Sampson is innocent, but as I understand it, right now all we have from the NCAA are "allegations" that he committed the major infractions of lying and misleading them and IU officials. To fire him right now would undoubtedly cost an already cash-strapped athletic dept. significant money--either in the form of a buy-out or from a lawsuit.
Perhaps IU should instead suspend Coach Sampson for the remainder of the season, pending the outcome of the full investigation, and with the expectation that if any of the major violations are found to be true, he is a goner.

JanetM:

You misunderstood - I do not care what happens to Sampson at this point. If he lied and violated his agreement, then due process will take its course and he will be gone. If not, he will stay. My comments were directed at Kravitz - I am shocked that he still has teeth remaining given how quickly and violently his knee jerks every time something happens. Kravitz spouts and moves on. Classic windbag. I would like to see him fired. OK, JanetM?

i think it was in sampson's contract that if he had any violations while at indiana that his contract would not be up held and that indiana could get out of it if they wanted.

I.U. needs to cut their losses and dump him now. When you hire a guy already under sanctions from the NCAA, you can't act surprised when he turns out to be a liar and a cheat. Cut him now and move on.

Come on, the NCAA needs to lighten up! MAJOR infractions? Covering up for a player's murder, dealing drugs, giving the players' an A when they do not show up for classes, giving them money to play....those are MAJOR infractions! Making a three way call to a recruit? Give me a break! Since I typically drive 5 mph over the speed limit, I guess I should be in prison with thieves and murderers.

I'm not sure I understand the "They're only allegations" defense. IU has already self reported on the majority of the findings. The only new "allegations" are that Sampson "misled" the NCAA and IU. Or maybe he "misremembered" what he the rules he violated at Oklahoma? I get confused?

As for the fear of spending more money... If the IU athletic department wasn't able to structure a contract which would protect themselves against a guy who was being hired with sanctions already over his head, then they should just close the doors to Assembly Hall now, because the entire athletic department is officially incompetent.

IU should do what makes sense. Fire the guy and move on.

As a purdue grad, i am taking no pleasure in this. i am still a hoosier (by birth) and i have always been proud of our basketball tradition within the state. just as we started making history with 4 teams in the top 25, this happens. this is sad, no matter who you cheer for. it's gonna take awhile for IU to recover from this. sad day. time for kelvin to go... maybe he can be a spokesman for verizon - can you hear me now?
