You were lucky! The problem with the Amish is not only do they treat the puppies like livestock but worse than they treat their farm animals. If animals don't make money for them or provide a service, they don't care what happens to them. For instance, they will keep a mother dog bred every heat cycle, kept in small cage until she stops providing puppies. Then they dispose of her? Don't ask how...she will be shot and killed and disposed of like garbage. That is inhumane!

And to think that your puppies were partially crate trained and partially housebroken proved to you they were not from a puppy mill? Not proof at all and you are in denial. And they should have been given their puppy shots! No excuse on that.

We bought 2 Cockapoos, brother and sister from the same litter. Boy for us and girl for friends totally awesome puppies and a great experience doing business with them.
I think the problem is that the Amish think these dogs are livestock and treat them like animals and not like furry people the way some on the boards think they should. They are dogs!!! Both puppies had standard puppy issues, needed shots, some ear infections but all totally normal and healthy. Great dogs and Ben was a pleasure to do business with. Ours is the practice favorite at the Vet and groomer. Would drive the 7 hours and do business with him again.
Both dogs were partly crate trained and on the road to house broken when we got them at 8 weeks, that is proof that they are not coming from a puppy mill.

More info on .Speichers Farm:

2010 had numerous violations, dirty, no vet records, kept puppies in filthy cages.

2011 - cleaned up his act and passed inspection.
Is licensed to breed 51-100 dogs a year. 2010 sold 245 dogs.

That's a big commercial breeder and I would be cautious before buying from him.

Be very careful buying a Cavalier. Be sure to get a health certificate and see both parents on premises. These beautiful little dogs have many genetic defects if not bred properly. If he breeds more than one breed of dog, then he is NOT an expert on Cavaliers. If so, then I would stay away from him and ask your vet for recommendation of a good Cavalier breeder.

Good luck!

I just put a deposit on a Boxer puppy from a breeder in Denver, PA. Roxanne and Leon Martin. Their website is Hawk Valley Boxers. I am not supporting puppy mills, am I? They appear to love their dogs because they require you to have previously owned a Boxer or have at least researched them. They claim the puppy will be AKC "Limited" registered. I wonder if they are serious or is this just a front. Anyone that can give me any info on these folks, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
Did you get the boxer from them? I am currently looking at them for a female boxer and was wondering what you thought

READ.......don't buy from pet stores or big breeders who are licensed.....

Pet store owners and employees will say they don't get their puppies from puppy mills - they only get their puppies from 'USDA Licensed Breeders'. Well... that just means their supply sources are big enough breeding operations to fall under USDA jurisdiction. Here's the requirement: Breeders who have more than three breeding female dogs and who sell puppies to pet stores or puppy brokers are required to be licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).—

I wish people would stop bragging about their positive dealings with the big commercial breeders in PA. Don't know the purpose....oh wait a minute, sure there is a purpose

They are either big breeders themselves, good friends with a commercial breeder they are bragging about or are a broker getting commission for every puppy sold.

Many, many on here have NOT had good experiences and these positive postings only make them feel bad.

Keep your bragging to yourself!! You are not doing any good for the poor families that bought a puppy mill dog, just reminding them of their heartaches.

I'm TRYING to go the adoption route for the second time for a pair of GSD. The problem? Cost is about the same as puppy mill, process is crazy invasive including badgering of references. Once you're vetted with one rescue it doesn't convey to another, each starts the process all over again. The ATTITUDE of some of the reps are not unlike dog Nazi's or inquisitors. I've also adopted from rescue and ended up with $350.00 stage II parvo.(Hindsight beware of rescues that seem to ONLY have puppies. Good chance THEY are SPCA puppy mills).

There are rescues out there that give rescues a bad name. I agree...beware of rescues that brag they have rescued puppy mill dogs because they are contributing the continuation of the mills. These breeders don't care who gets their puppies why? It gives them more room to breed for more. And some rescues are so strict that they have house inspections. Give me a break, what is that all about. Their attitude turns a lot of people off. I have owned 7 dogs and was a dog trainer and one group I was interested in getting a rescue from came to my house with a clip board and went into every room. I couldn't wait to kick them out and of course I did not adopt from them.

I did rescue another dog but from a rescue that makes sure dog is healthy, does temperament testing, and let me walk dog before accepting her. No house inspections and a $125 donation. We got a bag of food and a collar and an adorable dog.

There are good rescues out there. You have to be diligent in your search. And trust me, when you rescue not only are you giving a dog a forever home but you are getting forever love.

<quoted text> OK so I just came across this website. After buying an American Eskimo puppy from John Stoltzfus an Amish farmer from Paradise Pa I am a little worried!! Our puppy is 11 weeks old and seems healthy. We got her at 8 weeks of age. My husband bought her for $450 at 8 weeks old. When he picked her up (I wasn't there) he said they were outside in a fenced area but had access to a barn for shelter. I found the american Eskimos online through Sunnyside puppies, he also has them advertised on Next day pets.. Anyone know if he runs a puppy mill? This saddens me! I never thought the Amish were so cruel!! If I did get her through a puppy mill I don't know what I will do. I do know I will never buy a puppy through a puppy mill again! I will defiantly be researching!! However everyone of these animals still needs a home whether they came from a puppy mill, pet store , breeder or animal shelter! How can we put an end to puppy mills in PA??
I wanted to know of your experience with your Eskimo from that breeder. He is still selling them and I'm curious how your experience went up to this point?

Thanks again

@Lovaldogs - do you know if Arlene Weaver is still in the Bichon business? And is she considered a puppy mill? We got our little girl from her in Dec 2001 - she's now 12.5 years old and has been nothing but a joy!

I don't understand your question other than to brag that your bichon is great? Or considering getting another puppy from her? Go see for yourself and read signs of puppymill on here in past posts.

If you are going to speak for a whole group of people you need to do more research and study. The way you use words is to inflame people to your thoughts and cause. Would you rather have people who can think behind a cause or people who want to just destroy for the purpose that is put in front of them. So once again are you qualified to speak for a whole people group or not.

Just wanted to let you guys know that we purchased our labradoodle Barkley from Dale Weaver at Deep Run over 9 years ago. Although she's had her share of minor medical issues (what dog hasn't), she is basically in good health, and a treasure. Smart, lovable, cute and empathetic. She is now a certified Pet Therapy dog and my wife takes her to hospices and special education schools every week. I would definitely recommend Dale and would go back to him in a heartbeat.
