When you have so many puppies on premises as this breeder does, it would be very hard to socialize the puppies properly. Your friends were lucky but so many on here are not happy with their purchases from big commercial breeders.

I agree that before buying any puppy from anyone, go see place and take a tour of where puppies are kept, where mothers are kept, ask how and how often puppies are socialized. Look at vet certificate provided before buying dog. Call vet on certificate before buying. And remember to take your pup to your own vet within 72 hours of purchase. Pennsylvania has a puppy lemon law but there is time limits on it that's why taking pup to your own vet is so important.

If a breeder refuses to show you mother or kennels where pups are kept. Walk away, they are hiding something.

He does sell a lot of dogs, but I know a few friends that have gotten huskies from him and they couldn't be more happy with him, his family and the dogs. There were socialized. I believe his whole family is involved in the process.
I would always suggest going to see him and the puppies for yourself to make the right call for you.

I am about to buy a Pitbull from Vick Farms. Has anyone bought from there? The owner, Michael, seems to be really knowledgeable about the breed and said if they are trained right, they can pay for themselves over and over again.

The reason not to buy from a puppy mill is the breeders cause horrible pain and suffering to the breeding parents. The pups may or may not be all right, probably most are. But do not encourage the abuse and suffering meted out to the breeding adults.
Shelters are quite right in recommending adopting a puppy mill puppy. They will know pup's health issues and will be up front about any problems. They are trying to save lives and are not contributing to the abuse inflicted upon helpless animals by money-grubbing puppy mill owners.

Always ask to see the akc papers first to see owners name. I met a nice older women who gave me tea and cookies. puppies were very healthy but it was very late at night when I got to there home. When I asked to see the parents they said everyone was already beded down for the night. When I emailed them to send me pictures of the parents they wouldn't get back to me. I decided to research tje name on the akc papers amd found information on this cite that James Zimmerman was Suposed to shut down for running a puppymill.

AKC papers are just that -- papers. They can be "fudged"....
Sounds like this woman was a "front" family selling puppies for someone else. Always see the parents! No matter what the excuse. If they don't show you, they are hiding something...walk away!
Many kennels that were shut down have reopened under different names or selling less than 26 dogs a year to avoid inspections, but to avoid fines, they hide their business and use "cutesie" families like the woman who offered you cookies to sell their puppies.
What a scam many of these breeders are running....shameful!!

I have been looking for a dalmatian for months now. Yes, I have looked at rescues but many are mixed (at least in the shelters remotely near me) and I really, truly want a purebred dal because of the qualities they hold.

My mother was SO excited to have found a purebred pup in Lancaster, PA (from lancasterpuppies.com ). She overnighted half the amount (dog was $650) and we actually planned to go this Saturday. Well, I asked her the name of the breeder and his name was Elam Fisher. Upon a little googling I found this thread and many others telling of the horrible puppy mill scandals. I HAD NO IDEA UNTIL THAT MOMENT. Obviously, my mom is stopping payment on the check and hopefully we won't lose our money.

Why do I know this jerk runs a puppy mill? Well after digging I found he is related to many other Fishers charged for running puppy mills, as well as many of the other names I've seen on this thread. My mom was so embarrassed but I told her please don't be, it looks like they work really hard to dupe people.

My mom called him and told him about my research. Instead of calmly explaining or trying to calm her worry, he got EXTREMELY pissed and defensive and said that she had lost him potential buyers because he was "holding" the dog for us. He said it was wrong to "cancel."

The point? A real breeder would not want to sell you a dog if you weren't sure. A true breeder who cares about where their puppies will end up would probably THANK you for choosing to not take a puppy if you weren't sure. A real breeder who wasn't in it for the cash alone wouldn't be so pissed about you "cancelling the sale."

I'm really glad we dodged a bullet. I will continue to search for a dalmatian in a rescue or will only buy from a reputable breeder once I have done my research.

Don't! After researching we called him to cancel and he got so defensive and rude because he "held" the dog for us and other people missed out.

He actually didn't, I checked the listing and he never moved the dog we were going to buy to "sold."

We were looking for a dalmatian puppy and he knew nothing about the breed. He had no idea they were prone to deafness or kidney stones and he couldn't even tell how much the dog weighed? Weird.

Also, when my mom accused him of being a puppy mill, his response? "Well, what's your definition of a puppy mill?"

REALLY?! Who cares what the ACTUAL definition of a puppy mill is? You're not a legitimate breeder on a technicality. If you're using puppies as a cash crop, you're a mill. Elam is the front for the mill, I believe. He told us the father would be on-site but his son had the mom elsewhere? Major red flag.

DON'T BUY FROM THIS GUY.

One more thing, you may want to contact the Dog Law Enforcement people or the Humane Society so they can check him out. He may be operating under the wire. What website was he on? Greenfield? Make sure you contact them, supposedly they want to know about bad breeders.
