Just wondering how you made out with your puppy purchase?
I bought a boxer from these breeders on 12/15/13, so your puppy might be Ginger's sibling, I was torn between getting Ginger and her brother Dakota. At that time did not even think about this whole puppy mill risk. I met the parents and siblings of the puppy but now often wonder if they were a mill sort of place. Property was so huge a kennel like place could have easily been hidden from sight. I went to a breeder because the rescue places make it very difficult, time consuming and tedious. I also needed a young puppy because I have another dog that would never have adjusted to an older dog being brought in. My puppy is perfect and with any pet purchase from no matter where they all have health risks within their breeds. If this place is indeed a puppy mill they hid it very well, as I would not purchase from an obvious mill. I could not find anything on records that this breeder is a known puppy mill.
We are extremely happy with our puppy. We chose Missy which was Wendy's sister. Missy was not on the website. This being our first Boxer, she is everything we have read about Boxers. I felt the place was a little strange though, in my opinion. There were two adult female Boxers in crates in a shed near the driveway. There were two different litters of puppies in the same shed. It was nice and warm in there. Could have been a tad cleaner. Roxanne seemed knowledgeable about the breed and seemed to care about the puppies. But I just had a strange feeling about it all. We drove 4 hours through an ice storm so as long as the puppy looked healthy to us, she was coming home with us. I don't feel guilty about not going with a rescue dog. I have children and we wanted to raise the dog from an 8 week old puppy. I did some research on this couple before we got her. This weblink is the only negative info I found and it was over 10 years ago. http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/LancasterInsp...

Our puppy is growing like a weed and we have spoiled her big time. She fits in very well with our two cats although she throws the one around like a rag doll. But the cat keeps coming back for more. It's entertaining.

Rachel and John zook are in Stevens, Pa.
Big commercial kennel.......given citation in nov 2012 for no rabies shots for 6 dogs over three months of age and maintenance issues. Many puppies had no birthdate on their records.
If a breeder is that careless how is he about carefully breeding his dogs. I would be very careful! Read posts on what to look for......

To puppy question....David Zook closed his commercial kennel. During the time he was open, he had numerous warnings and citations for filfth, broken cages, poor record keeping. He was licensed to breed 501 dogs a year.....yikes.

He must be selling under the radar now but my opinion? Past behavior predicts future behavior, I would not buy a dog from this guy!

Any breeder who breeds that many dogs does not have quality in mind. Definitely in it for the money. A good breeder wants to be sure their dogs are healthy and go to good homes. These people just want your money. Do they ask questions of you, what kind of home the dog is going to, whether you have a fenced in yard? Think about it. THEY DON'T CARE! They only want the money!!!

Latest inspection 2/2013 - dirty again....large commercial breeder. Agree with dog walker that if he can't keep his kennels clean, how does he maintain health of his puppies. Red flag!
Contact your local vet and ask for recommendations of a Boston Terrier. Get on Boston Terrier sites and ask them too.
Good luck...

Linag - I stand by my statement re inspection in January, 2013. He was given verbal and written warning for the conditions of his kennels. His ventilation was not acceptable. Now you may say so what...well the strong smell of ammonia is a strong indication he is not cleaning his kennels as often as he should. And that can create health hazards for dogs, eg parasites, etc.

At time of inspection he had 65 dogs on premises....how can you breed for betterment of breed with that many dogs.

And if he is not concerned with cleanliness? How concerned is he with health of dogs.

Just my opinion, but I would not buy a dog from him despite some "glowing" reports on here....inspectors felt otherwise.......

Not allowed in? Red flag, what is he hiding!! Any buyer should be allowed to see any and all parts of a kennel to see how mother dogs are kept and how puppies are kept.....standard practice for any good breeder.

Is this the kennel? If so, he was inspected twice in 2010 and passed other than he had no vet records. I would suggest that you ask to see the health records for the pup you will be buying and call that vet before you buy dog. Just to be sure.....
Good luck.

It might be too late to be concerned now but you should have puppies examined by your own vet within 72 hours of purchase. There is a puppy lemon law in PA. So if there is a problem you will have recourse with breeder.

More info on Dan Esh and his son......many violations, court appearances, etc. he keeps re opening under another kennel name. He had 600 dogs at one time and closed in 2010 because he couldn't keep up with new laws....

He has probably reopened under another name as he has applied for variances etc.

I would not buy from this guy but that's just my opinion based on my research.....

Found his kennel - Sandy Hill in Parkesburg.

He is USDA licensed to breed 501 dogs a year. Last inspection was on May 29 2012 when he had 138 dogs on premises. Previous warnings for lack of proper ventilation for dogs was corrected.

For previous 12 months he had 400+ dogs. That is a big commercial breeder that is breeding that many dogs for pure profit, not the betterment of the breeds.

This should be repeated for all to see:

Puppy mills are often USDA licensed so they can sell puppies to pet stores in quantity. A USDA license is a red flag that breeders are in the business only to make a quick profit at the expense of the dogs they have.

Personally I would not buy a dog from this breeder.
With that many dogs, how can he keep them healthy and be sure to watch genetic defects that may occur in his line. I'm also sure his dogs get no socialization which for a puppy lays the ground work for his personality as he grows.

I know that Steve Stoltzfus offers a 1 year health guarantee which is 11 months more than PA requires.
He does sell a lot of dogs, but I know a few friends that have gotten huskies from him and they couldn't be more happy with him, his family and the dogs. There were socialized. I believe his whole family is involved in the process.
I would always suggest going to see him and the puppies for yourself to make the right call for you.
