Lovaldgs,

As you seem to know a lot about the dog world of Pennsylvania, I was just wondering if you have any information about Black Horse Animal Hospital in Kinzers, PA as the head vet and owner is a Willard Stoltzfus. It seems that last name has come up in a lot of posts and I was wondering if indeed this is a reputable vet to take my dog to.

The name Stoltzfus is as common in PA as Smith is and we shouldn't judge people by their last name. Here is the website for the animal hospital you're asking about. Read it and then make your decision. Personally, I would have no problem taking my dog to a vet hospital that has as many licensed vets on staff as they do.

Good luck.

Has anyone done business with Daniel Fisher, Ronks, PA, breeder of English Springer Spaniels, who adverstises on Greenfield Puppies? He does not own a kennel, and I will call his vet, Smoketown Vet Hospital, on Monday to learn a little about his litter of ESS. I have been looking for an ESS for a few years, but very few are being bred near me. I have had no luck with the ESS rescue although I did rescue a dog of a different breed and a cat while waiting for an ESS. If anyone knows anything about this breeder or his dogs, I'd appreciate the information.(Yes, I'm aware that Greenfield is a broker of puppy mill dogs, and I hate the idea of possibly supporting such an unethical practice.) As I said, I plan to speak to the vet and visit the breeder before making a purchase. Thank you for your help.

All the breeders in Ronks, PA breed a minimum of 50 -250 dogs. Listed on Dept of Agriculture site. Those are big commercial breeders and puppy mills!

ESS lover - you are smart doing your homework. Be sure to visit the site where Fisher bred his dogs. Smart calling vet. Buy with your head not your heart.

For Zooks, again breeders listed in Ephrata area all big commercial kennels. Sounds like puppy mills to me. You too do your homework....go see where the dogs are bred and call vet references.

Good luck to you both.

Thanks for the response, LOVEALLDOGS. I called the vet that the breeder told me on the phone he had taken the puppies to. Because of privacy laws, they were unable to give me a lot of information. However, I was told that any breeder who takes his or her puppies to a vet will receive a "Vet Check" paper (printed on yellow paper). Initially, the breeder had told me he had taken the puppies to the vet; however, when I spoke to him a second time, I told him that I would need to see his Vet Check papers. He said he didn't have them. I guess the breeder didn't think I would call the vet. Again, thank you for all of your responses on this site. I've learned a lot.

So glad I could help. This is another lesson that I hope other people will learn from reading these posts. The big commercial breeders will lie just to sell you a puppy and hope you don't do any background checking such as calling vet.

Lesson- do your homework before you go see the dog as once you see it, it will be harder for you to turn away. These breeders depend on that.

Hope you do find the dog you want...and have you called your own vet for recommendations or any kennel club that represents ESS?

lovaldgs!!!

To: mjw
Without knowing the name of the kennel, it is hard for me to give information. However, there are two kennels with the name Kauffman. One was closed by PA on March 15 because of horrible conditions.(puppy mill) The other Kaufmann passed inspection and had only 11 dogs and 5 pups on premises. If you want a German Shepherd call your local vet for a recommendation and the local German Shepherd kennel club.

To Batsita. You were very lucky that you got a good dog. Advice is to never buy from a website with the breeding facility not being looked at. And you had dog shipped? Another way puppy mills do business is to ship dogs without buyer seeing kennel.

They are hiding something!!! Buyer beware.

Is anyone familiar with The Esh family? I'm interested in buying a chocolate lab from them.. They are located in Paradise, Pennsylvania.. and yes, I found them through the Greenfield puppies website.. I am very nervous to do any business with them now that I have found out greenfield has a connection to puppy mills...

Has anyone bought from them or know anyone who has?? The woman's name is Rebecca, I'm not sure about her husband.. maybe John?

Thanks!

Don't buy any dogs from Greenfield. They are a known puppy mill broker. If your nervous then buyer beware.

The Esh family has a very bad reputation as one of the biggest puppy mill breeders in Lancaster County.

They lose license then reopen under a new name or sell under the radar with no inspections.

This is a newspaper article two years ago about the Esh's. Read it - would you buy from them???????? Hope not!!!!!!!

Quoted article::::
"We know Esh is still breeding. But now with no license he doesn't have to report his numbers to anyone or go through any federal inspections," Pressman said.

Two Amish men at the Esh farm in Intercourse shoved a Post photographer and reporter who tried to get into the farm's kennel. Puppies could be seen peering through a barn's second-story windows, and they were barking in what sounded like large numbers.

"Nobody goes up there!" one of the two shouted. Then he pointed to a German shepherd guard dog and warned, "You're lucky he doesn't tear that knapsack off your back!"

I wonder if they are related to these Esh people?

Greenfield puppies sells puppy mill dogs, no reputable breeder would ever sell their dogs through them imo. Also I noticed you are posting from Florida, please do not put a puppy through a long flight! Talk about torturing a defenseless baby.

Contact local vets and dog clubs to try to find a reputable breeder or consider adopting please, here are plenty of Chocolate labs looking for a home -

Sounds like the same Esh family who just reopen under new kennel names. Many puppy millers do that staying one step ahead of the law.

DON'T BUY DOG OVER INTERNET FROM A GLITZY LOOKING AD OR DON'T HAVE DOG SHIPPED TO YOU.........YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW OR WHERE THEY WERE BRED AND RAISED. Justinia's advice is good!

Rescue a dog and give them a forever home and they will give you forever love!!!!

LOVE ALL DOGS!!!!

Justinia, I was NOT going to fly the puppy to me!! I was actually going to drive through Lancaster to pick him up as he's 2 1/2 hours from my parents' home.. I've never seen Amish country, so was going to make it a mini-family vacation! I would never ship a puppy.. I have to SEE HIM and interact with him before I do anything. Too much trauma to a poor baby dog to fly him anyway.
I was unfamiliar with the Lancaster puppymill info, I appreciate the information!

We are looking for lab but Ive been looking under Petfinders but really have not found what we are looking for yet. I am all for looking for a good breeder but so many of them charge $1000 for a dog and that is not for me.I am not out there for showing I would like a family pet. I would like a purebreed just cause I want it to look like a lab. I have adopted from the SPCA before and loved her she was a lab/shepard mix but really looking for a lab (chocolate)now and would love to have one that looks like a lab.

I bought a dog from greenfeild puppies. I originally wanted to visit the shelter but they where giving lots of problems because I was 20 at the time. I found that the man I was buying from in honeybrook was a farmer so I asked him some questions about how he breeds his dogs and where they sleep etc. He had all the right answers so i felt it was an ok decision to purchase the puppy. Till this day my dog has extreme anxiety around people showing he was most likely not socialized or mistreated. He also had a small case of mange that treated very quicky but was still very angry. I recomend not to follow in my foot steps save a life there are many adorable puppies in these shelters and the older dogs are great.

Glad to hear that. When you go see the dog ask to see where the dog was bred and to meet the mother and father if available. Ask for vet reference and call vet BEFORE you buy the puppy. See what kind of guarantee the breeder gives you. Check this all out before buying that puppy...buy with your head not your heart and you could save yourself many years of vet bills, heartache, etc. Good luck!
