Puppy breeding and boarding kennels throughout Pennsylvania have been virtually assured of passing grades from state regulators even with feces-filled living areas, cramped cages, dirty water bowls and diseased ...

I would never buy any animal from a Dutchmen. They run puppy mills and have no respect for animals. Not to mention they hold up traffic with their buggies.

I really wish you'd do more investigative reporting and not must spitting out what you're told - especially by local elected officials.

I have to agree on buying a horse from a Dutchman, especially the work horses, they rum those big guys right into the ground, then take them at the end of the year and pan them off at New Holland..They really dont respect their critters too much, except for their buggy horses, they keep them up and pacing..You see that is what p!$$es off about them, they dont respect the animals that bring them their crop, but to buy a pacer for thousands they got the bucks...I work mine in a wagon or a cart but I also love them as pets as well...big difference between me and them...And when you go to New Holland you see them their selling puppies everywhere, people think they are the choosen ones, yea..

Agree with not buying a dog from Joyce Stoltzfus...she has been fined, brought to court etc and still gets away with selling sick puppies.

Lesson - never buy a dog/puppy from a pet store or on the internet or from a farm in Lancaster County. They are puppy mill dogs. I live right next to Lancaster County and drive buy these beautiful farms with signs of pups for sale. I've encountered wholesaler/broker vans picking up these dogs for delivery to NJ pet stores and PA pet stores. No matter what the pet store tells you? Beware, their dogs are from puppy mills!!!!!

For the beautiful "dutch" farms in Lancaster- drive into one but be prepared, if they let you into their barns to see the horrors that the puppies are living in. HORRIBLE!! Don't be fooled by their vet checks either....many have been caught forging vet signatures figuring the general public won't check it out. And most of all don't think because the puppy is AKC registered that proves it's a good dog. NOT TRUE!!!! All those papers prove is that the dog is purebred and AKC gets a fee for every puppy registered from PA.....no wonder they are silent on stopping puppy mills. BIg income drop for them....so no matter what their publicity says? Phony...all they care about is their income.

Shameful how the "dutch farmers" have found a new cash crop....puppies and they are God loving people? Hard to understand that since puppies are God's creatures too and the cruelty the put on their dogs.

I pray that all the wardens are replaced also, they have been letting these puppy mills "get away with everything" I say, fire the bunch of them and start over with people willing to do their jobs correctly!

Thank you Morning Call for researching and reporting on this so thoroughly. It seems to me we could avoid this problem to a great extent by removing the incentive to keep hundreds of dogs in kennels - in other words, prohibit breeding them for profit. It is only right to end the business of breeding, given the thousands of unwanted dogs that we euthanize every day.

First, thank you for this fine piece of investigative reporting.

Inept officials who don't know that their computer system is truncating reports at 255 characters, can't run summary reports of multiple inspections, etc. Whoa! This is the 21st century... Who are these people? I suppose they have government jobs because they are unemployable in the private sector because they lack basic computer skills.

But back to the animals... It's clear that kennel owners can't be trusted to do the right thing. So the only solution is to regulate them more - they've brought this on themselves. I'm all for more regulation, more inspections, bigger fines, and loss of licenses.

If this increases the cost of owning dog then that higher price is the true cost of owning a dog, and that's what we should pay for a dog.

Right now dogs are cheap because we the dogs pay in suffering what we are not prepared to pay in dollars.
