AG unsure on possible appeal to sex offender ruling

The attorney general's office is unsure if it will appeal a recent Court of Appeals ruling that excuses sex offenders living within the boundaries of tribal lands from registering on the state's sex offender registry.

Wow. I REALLY don't understand that at all. I understand the idea of sovereignity and all, but how does it help anyone to not know where the child molesters are? Are they by the schools? The parks? I'd be mad if I was Navajo.

BTW...did anyone notice that one the NM sex offenders website, there is a trailer park behind the mall that is "Child Molester Central" with no less than four of them living there?

Ok if there are any tribal officials out there, know this, here is a good example to make out of our sovereignty! Lets use our sovereignty as a tribal government to determine that we will cooperate with off reservation agencies to provide the information that we know about these criminals. It is a digital world, a flat world, and the tribe needs to get on board! THis will not break the bank. With the wholly inadequate law enforcement now in existence on the rez, this will provide watershed relief. We can protect ourselves better from these creeps if we know who they ARE! Thank you.

This is ridiculous. It is a STATE registry for child molesters. If someone lives within the state they should have to register. PERIOD. It should not matter whether it is on the rez or not. Break a federal and state law they should be held accountable. Disgusting that the Navajo Nation would have to think about whether or not to protect its children...its FUTURE!!! Shame on you Navajo Nation!!!

maybe you outta ask that to the U.S. gov't,what it is...is what it was 141 years ago when they sign the treaty.I know our juducial system is screwed to the max especially our D.O.J.'s input and recommendation at the capital,so let it be up to the people's choce if they vote on it.

This is the stupidest question I think I've ever seen coming off the rez. Whether or not to make sex offenders accountable on the website in each state. I can tell you one thing, if a child molester who happens to live on the rez but comes to Farmington to work or play and isn't registered as a sex offender and harms someone's child or is dating someone's daughter or son, hurts them. I'll own the Navajo tribe if it's the last thing I do. The $300,000 they paid the John's for their trial again'st the COF will be chicken feed. They better darn well decide to make them register. What idiots! Climb out of the cave and come up into the present!!

ABSOLUTELY!!! I wonder how well that would sit when the times comes for an offender to come off the rez, molest one of the white kids and run back to the rez. White people from Farmington can start a march and sue the NN for not making them register or even arresting them for doing wrong. They can waste money on bogus lawsuits and pointless mobile cop units they will surely pay for not making their molesting criminals register simply because they live in the rez.
