Thank God they bought it before Scalise torn it down and put another set cookie cutter houses in the spot of one of the few landmarks left in Surfside. For years now there are people that call Surfside Beach, "Scalise Beach" because of their takeover of the town....tearing down the old quaint beach houses and putting up one after the other, after the other, after the other of look alike houses. Thank God the town had the sense to save the pier before Scalise added another Surfside Beach landmark tragedy to their portfolio.

Will Surfside Beach residents continue to have to pay to enter and enjoy the pier that they now own? Probably, and will the fee be higher? Most likely. Can we use the parking lot free? Do Surfside Beach residents benefit at all from us owning the pier? Sooner or later our taxes will be used to pay for it.

i always wondered why they didnt built steel and concrete piers in SC like they do on the west coast and parts of FL. would stand up to storms alot better

2.5 million Scalise is sticking it to SSB. The pier is waste of Taxpayer dollars. What about the firehouse etc..???? It takes two yrs for it to be put on paper but hey 3 months and buy the pier. Complete idiots.

I can wait for the town to go under. We should send Ed and his crew to Atlantic beach to have them solve their problems

Let's not forget what he did to the Hermitage and Garden City Beach. It's a crying shame.

A public pier is a good thing. That is unless the Surfside Beach officials decide to lease the operation of said pier to private buisness to operate.....

A. They're ugly and certainly don't blend well in a natural surrounding.

B. Steel and salt water aren't always a good mix.

C. Initial cost.

I think it's great that the Town Council decided to buy the pier...it is a landmark and one of the oldest on the east coast...you guys/gals who are so negative need to get a grip or either go back to where you are from. Mayor Deaton's main focus is to keep Surfside beach looking like the "natural" beach it once was with the revitalization, the drainage problems, to the trash and recycling. Surfside buying the pier will only allow us to have have versatile usage of the landmark, and but the end of the transation, say by next spring...it will probably generate much more money than it does...not from charging people entry fees just to go on, but who knows, may offer more for families to enjoy. Kudos to the Mayor...I think he is a breath of fresh air to this lovely town.

Great news! Maybe we won't lose one of the last local restaurants in the area due to Scalise rent hikes.

I am sure that building a new pier would cost a great deal more than keeping what we have now...I am sure, if worse came to worse, and by storm damage, there are already plans underway if that were to happen...my kid's love going on the pier just to watch people fish...it brings you back to reality and puts you in a place away from the beach in a way...Whatever the council has in mind, I have the upmost faith that it will be to make this town better. Just having new people is a bonus...their ideas are even greater.

I hope with this change they will stay. Last year they were thinking about not renewing their lease because of Scalise rent hikes.

Does current township law allow you to smoke while you fish?

Thank goodness at least one of the piers will remain. I grew up going fishing with Daddy on the Cherry Grove pier but that has been ruined by Ed Prince and his development. Tilghman pier is gone. I'm glad Surfside stepped up..

I certainally think with the cost of building materials it would be more expensive to build a new pier I would hope the city of Surfside after the expense of purchasing the pier would have adequate insurance on it If I were a taxpaying resident of SSB I would check on that for shure SHOVELHEAD GCB SC

Buying the pier is a good thing. I was getting ready to launch a "Boycott Surfside Beach" campaign. Actually, between Scalise's greed and the towns smoking ban, they've started a de facto campaign all by themselves.
