Worst Medium Cities for Crime (200,000-500,000 pop.)
On the other hand, the South seems to be particularly challenged with crime:

1. Myrtle Beach, SC
Myrtle Beach has the highest total rate of crime in the nation, due to a high rate of violent crime and the nation's highest rate of property crime. In particular, the rates of assault, burglary, and larceny are particularly high.
2. Montgomery, AL
The murder rate is significantly high in Montgomery, as are the rates of robbery, burglary, and larceny.
3. Laredo, TX
While the larceny rate is high in Laredo, residents can take comfort in the relatively low rates of murder and forcible rape.
4. Waco, TX
Like Laredo, violent crime is less of a concern in Waco than property crime. In particular, burglary and larceny are a problem.
5. Wilmington, NC
Wilmington has the second-highest rate of burglary in the country. On the other hand, the rates of forcible rape and assault are low.

More on the Myrtle Beach crime rate

David Wren at the Sun News published an article today debunking the claims of local business and law enforcement that the Horry County area's high crime rate is inaccurate because tourists who commit crimes are not taken into account:

Most of the people arrested for committing violent crimes in Horry County live along the Grand Strand, according to an analysis of this year's booking reports at J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway.

Those reports appear to undermine statements made last week by local business and law enforcement officials, who are critical of a new CQ Press study that ranks the Myrtle Beach metro area - which includes all of Horry County - as the 14th-most-dangerous place in the United States.

Local officials say the CQ Press report is skewed because it does not take into account about 14 million tourists who visit Horry County each year.

Wren says that a review of 14,000 booking reports shows that 83% of persons charged with violent crimes, including robbery, aggravated assaults, rape and murder, are locals. Out of 671 bookings for serious violent crimes, 551 had home addresses in Horry and Georgetown Counties. He also points out that the Myrtle Beach metro area has more than double the crime rate of the New York metro area, which has 44 million tourists a year. Also,

The Atlantic City, N.J., metro area has a permanent population roughly the same size as Horry County's and claims 37 million annual visitors. That metro area had 1,594 reported incidents of violent crime last year for a rate of 589.5 crimes per 100,000 residents.

The Myrtle Beach metro area's violent crime rate also is higher than tourism meccas Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla., both of which attract about three times as many annual visitors as Horry County.

Myrtle Beach's crime rate, according to the FBI, is 948.1 incidents per 100,000 residents. Of course local business leaders and law enforcement want to make it look better than it is - local business leaders are afraid that tourists will stay away if they hear about the stats and fear that they might get robbed or killed while here on vacation, and law enforcement is afraid that we will think they aren't doing a good enough job.

The crime "RATE" is based on the population. The population is larger most of the year than the crime rate calculator takes into account. The same is true in college towns. I come from near Athens GA, University of GA, The population is around 40,000 but while school is in the true population is 80 to 90,000 however the crime rate is calculated using the permanent resident population of 40,000 and is therefore unfairly skewed. I suspect that the same is true of Myrtle Beach.

That's fine with me too.. I don't even live near Staten Island and he doesn't live in Myrtle Beach. You can have the biggest rest stop on the east coast. People come there and relieve themselves and leave. You want to live in a stall.. enjoy it!! l

No war just the facts...The guy from Florence is so anti-biker he has changed his name at least 6-10 times but his ISP still shows Florence, It's actually comical to read his posts. Move where you want but research before you do..

I only post under the name Turk in Myrtle Beach, I suppose anyone in this area with Road Runner internet would be shown to be transmitting from Florence. Much like you say that you are not in Staten Island. The Crime rate post was my first ever on MB Topix.

Typical answer from some one who doesn't understand whats happening in his own back yard...I'll try something else that requires a little intelligence .. You see the different things that are being proposed by the Mb City Council like the Boardwalk are destined to fail. Hark Rock was a failure, Freestyle Park is failing (Yes, I know there not in MB) but it was built to attract people to the area. Now follow me, the Pavilion Amusement park always had people there.(Am I right). Now you only have an empty lot and those cheap crappy stores. Do you see the clients of that area of MB? Maybe you need to get out and have a look around your neighborhood. Take a ride to Seaboard rd.(northside), check the hotel behind the parking garage of the Landmark Resort,, classy places (I could go on)!! Yes, Make your comments like "Rich n Smart" and others but refuse to see until it bites you in the AZZ. Have a great day..
