"A new film from the Brave New Foundation outlines the role of the Koch-funded American Legislative Exchange Council in new voter suppression tactics; the Center for Media and Democracy is one of the voices featured in the film.

Through the corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), global corporations and state politicians vote behind closed doors to try to rewrite state and federal laws that govern your rights. The so-called "model bills" of this corporate bill mill -- which has been funded by Koch profits and other corporations -- reach into almost every area of American life, including the right to vote.

As the Center for Media and Democracy has noted on our ALECexposed site, ALEC bills or resolutions would disenfranchise Americans and give corporations even more power to use their vast financial resources to influence elections in our democracy without full disclosure of that spending. These two focal points of recent ALEC proposals pose twin threats to American democracy, by limiting the right of citizens to vote while expanding the power of for-profit corporations and the shadowy front groups funded by billionaires like the Koch brothers to distort elections through pouring money into expensive attack ads cloaked as "issue" advertising.

Through the corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, global corporations and state politicians vote behind closed doors to try to rewrite state laws that govern your rights. These so-called "model bills" reach into almost every area of American life and often directly benefit huge corporations. Through ALEC, corporations have "a VOICE and a VOTE" on specific changes to the law that are then proposed in your state. DO YOU?"

Notice on the video there is Oklahoma's governor in the back ground!

ALEC's disturbing level of influence.

Anna Scholl, ProgressVA, joins Thom Hartmann. According to a new report by the advocacy group Progress Virginia - lawmakers in Virginia have outsourced their jobs to the shadowy, Koch brothers-funded, corporate think tank known as ALEC - the American Legislative Exchange Council. In case you dont know what ALEC is - it's an organization that brings together corporate CEOs and lobbyists with elected lawmakers to come up with custom-made legislation that benefits big polluters, job outsourcers, and banksters, and hurts unions, poor people, and voters. And apparently it's found a friend in the Virginia General Assembly - where since 2007 - over 50 different pieces of legislation have been introduced that are exact carbon copies of ALEC written legislation. So what does it mean when corporate think tanks are in charge of writing out laws?

Exposing ALEC's Corporate Influence On State Government

Laws that put more people in prison might seem like a good thing if you're for law and order. But what if you found those laws had been passed so private prisons would have more people to incarcerate and therefor make more money? That's one of the allegations laid out by a coalition of groups in Arizona who are calling attention to what the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is doing to undermine democracy in America. The groups say ALEC takes millions of dollars from corporations and uses it to get state legislatures to do their bidding, passing laws that do everything from put more people in prison to disenfranchising voters. Former State Representative John A. Loredo introduces the speakers. Speakers at the event outside the Arizona state capitol in Phoenix include members of Common Cause, People For The American Way, Center for Media and Democracy, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the Arizona AFL-CIO, and the Office and Professional Employees International Union
