Back in the eighties, nineties and the majority of the 21st century, Realtors and scumbag swindling lenders were in bed together.
As a realtor, you had an arsenal of lenders who could get get the most pathetic credit scored person into home ownership. But it came at a high price. The real estate would be GROSSLY over appraised and people signed on the dotted line, simply because they weren't smart enough to stay within their means. The mortgage notes would be underwritten to make it nearly impossible to get out of.
There were people living in Taj Mahals eating steaks, who would be lucky to afford a trailer park and hot dogs on their income. They didn't have enough wisdom to pay an extra hundred bucks or so to have an experienced contract attorney review it.
Now what we have is a housing market that's already flooded due to job loss, but it's also adjusting back to the valuations where they should have been to begin with and slightly less.
It was the mortgage note that was worth $150,000.00, not the house. The house was always worth $60,0000.00.
Technically, many properties aren't "depreciating" because they never "appreciated" in the first place. Well except in shady, unethical lenders filing cabinets.
Some real estate agents were just as bad and had great working relationships with the scumbag lenders. They'd wine and dine real estate agents and agents would bring them impossible credit ratings to underwrite. They would get them a mortgage, but as a condition mr/mrs happy homeowner agreed to pay out the a#s for it. They would continously be refinancing and digging deeper holes, trying to stay afloat.
That's why I got out of the profession. I couldn't in good conscience sell someone something that I knew they could never afford just to turn a buck for myself.
I don't wish to speculate, but maybe this agent was one who never turned down a client?
It certainly doesn't justify his murder either way.
Home buyers need to smarten up and stay within their means. If it means a double wide, so be it. You aren't going to impress any one by having a home you can't afford.
Big brother government isn't going to be able to bail this out regardless of the sugercoated sweet talk that the politicians vomit up.
They better not ask me for a fcuking wooden nickel. I already did my part to try and save the market. I quit selling real estate.
You have absolutely no clue who this realtor was obviously. To make the assumption that he never turned down a deal is sickening. This was a good man with morals. You sicken me to put him in with a group of scumbags that you are referring to. My suggestion to you is not to make a comment when you have no clue who you are commenting on. This has nothing to do with the market or the realtor himself, this has to do with a cold hearted killer with serious issues who took a man from his wife, children and family. Maybe next time you should think before you speak!

Those of you that have used this forum to bash realtors should be ashamed of yourselves! I don't care what your opinion is of realtors or the real estate industry in general – the things that I have read here in the wake of this terrible tragedy are horrible! "This should send a message to realtors to not rip people off"??? Are you serious? Do you not even think about the fact that hundreds of people whose lives have been touched by this great man might read the comments that have been written here?!? What a bunch of nonsense!

I have known Troy since third grade. He was in my wedding and I was in his. In his short time on this earth he has lived a life that most everyone would be envious of. He had the strongest morals of anyone I've ever known. He was a wonderful friend that would have done anything for someone in need. He had an incredible bond and relationship with his family and church. He married his soul mate – an incredible woman that shared his same beliefs, passions, and values. He fathered two beautiful children and loved his two stepchildren like they were his own. His stepchildren loved him just the same. There wasn't a mean bone in Troy's body. He wouldn't ever treat anyone unfairly or do anything dishonest to advance his own financial position. Everyone that knows Troy is confident that the only person that had bad feelings toward Troy is the crazy old man that did this to him.

Troy was just a hardworking, honest guy that was trying to provide for his wonderful family. Even after his death he has saved six lives – how many of you can say you are even a fraction of the incredible human being that Troy was? I know I can't.

We love you Troy. You will be remembered always.

Why is is that so many think due process and the right to a trial by a jury of your peers is a waste until they are the ones who stand accused of a crime?

I am Troy Vanderstelts sister in law. His wife Bridget is my sister. We are all still shocked and hurting from this loss. Troy leaves behind 2 amazing stepchildren, Lainey and Matthew and his two biological children Corbin and Ava are the spitting image of him. While being around these children the pain and hurt radiates from them. It tugs at my heart, but as an aunt I can only do so much, for their pain is far greater than mine. Bridget is so strong and Troys family are such amazing people that I know they will all continue to be strong for Troy's sake. That is what he would have wanted. Any thoughts and prayers are welcomed and come greatly appreciated. Mr.Robert Johnson should not be the one remembered for all of this... Troy should be. I please ask any of you that speak about this tragedy to not focus on the tragedy itself, but to speak of the celebration of Troy's life. Justice will not be served here on earth, but the memory of Troy VanderStelt forever will be.

Brittany

Also Troy donated his organs and saved the lives of 6 people yesterday from his unselfish act even after passing. He is a hero to those families and to me.

I would like to add one thing to this horrible mix that has not been spoken of. Mr. Robert Johnson was a life long alcoholic! He's a bitter old man who obviously doesn't know the difference between right and wrong. I'm discusted to say, I have known this man my whole life! He will answer to God someday.
I'll continue to pray for the Vanderstelt family. Troy's true greatness lives on in his children.

In the midst of this tragedy, please know that Mr. Vanderstelt's family is in my thoughts now and in the days ahead. I am touched to know that Troy donated his organs. Bless those children.

I agree with this person and The Man. The difference in value wasn't that much. It definitely wasn't worth the life of another person. This was in no way Troy's fault.

What a sad statement about our world today. It really is pathetic that the man felt this was an appropriate solution. It is even worse that his family may have had some prior knowledge and did not intervene. It simply does not matter what the circumstances were or are, this should never have happened.

Sounds like Troy had a tremendous circle of family, friends and church. I am sorry for your loss.

---I agree with you. The real estate market has really lost a lot of integrity and I can see why you chose a different occupation. There really needs to be some laws to hold a realtor accountable. I personally had a bad real estate deal and took the realtor to court--and the judge told me "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink." I was sickend that it is OK to lie and cheat in order to make a deal. There is nothing sacred about a hand shake and a person's word any longer. What a sad world we live in. I also agree that no matter what went on that the person in this story was crazy when he committed murder over a real estate transaction. After all --it is only money!
