What is everyone's opinion about the coverage of the Ledger and Times? I personally think it is horrible and gets worse day by day. The news is always at least a couple days old and I always hear about the news event from a different source before the Ledger even thinks about running a story about it. The Murray State sports coverage is horrible. If you notice, over half the MSU sports stories are written by MSU Sports Information. That is just pure laziness by the sports editor who is in charge of MSU sports. Two separate times this week there have been an entire page devoted to pictures of the last year's sporting events that we have already seen. I would like to see more local stories written by the sports editor instead of a page full of pictures. This is only done because it is quick and easy. No work or thought is put into it at all. I am really shocked that the publisher puts up with his bull crap. Speaking of the publisher, I get so tired of seeing her picture or a big story about her in the paper every single day. Noone cares about the clubs or organizations she belongs with, do you? Probably not! The only good thing in the paper is the coverage of high school sports. That sports guy does a good job and wish he could cover the entire sports section and fire the editor.

It is so overpriced! It really should only be a weekly or bi-weekly paper.(and then be 25cents)

I agree totally. If it was a weekly paper at least Mrs. Jones' prize winning daisy wouldn't be front page news! I also agree about the high school sports...it's awesome coverage!

Newspapers are dying. The Ledger will be gone soon enough.

Not sure about that. In fact, there is a possibility that in the future, small newspapers will thrive while the big papers go belly-up. You can get national and world news from CNN and the internet, but where will you get a picture of Timmy's second place Little League team?

As for their coverage, they make money through advertisements, not subscriptions. Thus, they do not want to piss off any businesses that spend ad dollars with them. That is why the news is often watered down.

As for Murray State sports coverage, not many people care about the MSU golf team or girls volleyball. Almost all of those athletes are from other places...it is high school sports, featuring our kids and our neighbor's kids, that we want to see. And with a sports staff of only two guys, they do a nice job. They could not possibly be expected to cover all high school sports and all college sports, thus the use of press releases from MSU.

I can get the Murray State basketball, football and baseball coverage from WPSD or even more quickly on the internet. I can get high school scores on the internet or WPSD. Any local news has been heard by word of mouth long before the Ledger can print it, if they decide to print it. I can get classifieds, obits, comics, etc online.

Sure, papers make a lot of money off of advertising, but guess what? If the readership is almost nil, what's the point of paying to put your ad in there?

As for Timmy's Little League team...no one gives a shit except Timmy's family.

Like all newspapers, the ledger is run by liberal pussies. They ran a story about the Confederate Memorial Day gathering at the court square the day it was to be held, to ensure that any readers of that rag only had a 7 hour heads up to make plans to attend.

It's a worthless paper.

Well said. The only thing of any value I find in the Ledger and Times is the Crossword Puzzle. I can solve it while taking my morning constitutional and then use the rest of the paper to wipe my arse. I know that some of the local yokel busybodies like to see their pics in the paper to give them some sense of self-importance, but beyond that the paper serves no purpose. Gee lookie - there's another ribbon-cutting ceremony for a mom and pop antique store destined to go belly up within a year. If the paper dared to post substantive editorials or more regional/national/world news, perhaps it would merit more attention.

Of course, any editorials written by the local folks would be littered with grammatical errors and run-on sentences. Also, you are right on target when you refer to them as liberal pussies. They wouldn't dare to print articles that might question the efficacy of the "entitlement" programs in this welfare state. But at least I can get the schedule for upcoming tractor pulls.

Most newspapers today are the same way. True investigative journalism is a thing of the past. Newspapers today, big and small, are generally afraid to make advertisers angry. Small papers in particular now show ribbon-cuttings, little league photos, and those types of things. While mundane, it serves a purpose that no one else can. If you don't like it, why do you get the paper? Just to have something else to complain about?

I didn't start the thread and I never said I get the paper. I will tell you that I used to get the paper until it became nothing more than fluff.

Instead of saying "if you don't like it why buy it" the issue is why have a paper if it's not worth reading. That's what the thread was about to begin with. Some days the paper is good to read, but not everyday so I'm not sure it's worth keeping a daily paper in Murray.

It is much better that channel 6. Channel 6 is the worlds worst.

That is the point. If you don't think the paper is worth reading, then don't buy it. Easy decision, I would think. I see room for improvement in some areas, but I think overall it is a good small-town daily paper, so I subscribe to it. Do you need help making decisions for yourself?

That sux. What is lower, your expectations of your kids to make it to a sports page that nobody reads other than parents. Or you sitting around hoping a website is still around. Most real parents would would focus on math achievement or science. High school sports is fleeting. Knowledge is a basis and forever.

This station is dead. Sad that something named after the inventor of radio (WNBS=Nathan B Stubblefield) is owned by such a let down company. Froggy is dead, and so are their AM stations.

Stubblefield didn't invent the radio. He invented the wireless telephone.
