Oh haven't you heard? They are actually all staged by some super secret liberal conspiracy to take every bodies guns so the UN can take over and set up the One World Government of the New World Order. Or something like that.

Many are disturbed.

The current wave now is a sick way to get attention, but in reality, that is all it is. Before maybe they felt their parents or the world ignored them. When they shoot up a school, the world has to notice.

The problem is not guns, but (in part) an absolutely terrible mental health system. Being bipolar I can attest to that. Unless you have good insurance, you will get substandard mental health care.

Harris and Kliebold (Columbine) said they were gonna be famous. Maybe infamous.

Lets face it, in this area we all have heard the name Michael Carneal, haven't we?

The media, by making such a big deal out of it, only makes this worse.

IDK, somewhere in those 270 million guns owned by Americans, there are bound to be one or two that are a problem.

But put it in context of the healthcare debate: that if the mentally ill don't like their insurance coverage they can always just get another job that has better coverage. Mental Health Care is not free, somebody has to pay for it, and if the mentally ill don't want to pay for their own care, it has to come out of someone else's pocket.

But if we provide the mentally ill mental health care coverage for free, they won't have any incentive to take care of their own mental health, because they can always just go to the shrink with no consequences.

Plus, if we provide mental health coverage for people who allegedly can't or won't pay for it, it will lead to the rationing of mental health care and long delays for people who are actually paying for their mental health insurance as the shrink offices get filled to capacity with previously uninsured mentally ill.

Or at least that was the conservative argument, just with "poor people" replaced with "mentally ill", but I don't see how that changes anything.

BTW, I do not in any way mean to belittle your struggle, SpiritoftheHawk. My comments are really directed at those who used those arguments and my catharsis against the absurdity of it all. I have friends and family who have struggled with it as well, and you are being too kind calling our current system "substandard".

The Australians do not have the protection of the U. S. Constitution. And I just checked and I was right there has never been a report of a gun shooting someone by itself.

In response to the original post... Ask a Orca whale why it tosses defenseless seals around for hours before eating them. Some whales want to watch the world burn. Get the point? But that's different because the whale has to eat the seal to survive...but it doesn't have to play with it now does it. So we should save the defenseless seals and either kill the mean whales or make them register their teeth with the government so we can institutionalize them. People are trying to fix a problem that in the end is uncontrollable. The mere fact that we attempt to abolish this behavior only shows our arrogance in the grand scheme of things.

My advice...Don't take life to seriously, you'll never make it out alive.

As to the mental health topic.

I was not offering a solution, I was pointing it out. And people like the one that shot up Newtown tend to be so mentally ill they are disabled, which means they get medicare or medicaid covered mental health care. I am disabled and medicare's coverage is terrible. HOWEVER, I work very hard on my own with meditation, diet, sleep, and get by with bare minimum medications, taking time to research has helped. Now having PTSD on top of things makes it much more complicated. Talk therapy is a must. I also do well with getting pastoral counseling.

Maybe we should just shoot parents that neglect their kids?

Look I am not for kids being neglected by any means but "neglect" can also be subjective to opinion. It is also a necessary evil to an extent. Some people who have endured the hardest of childhoods have gone on to live good lives as adults, you also have the complete opposite happening as well. There are some things in life that can be modified or tweaked to work better or more efficiently and yes there should be guidelines as to what will be expected or tolerated however we can't control every aspect of everything. It's not possible. There will always be light so long as there is dark and this is the world we live in.

SpiritoftheHawk you keep your head up everyone has their demons to battle, none of us are exempt.

That is exactly what I would expect somebody from Madisonville to say. Go back to your conspiracy handlers and get some new marching orders.

Most of the shooters are taking legal drugs that cause homicidal or suicidal thinking, hallucinations and loss of impulse controls.
