the only thing spanking does, is make the person doing the spanking feel better!!!

time out works much better, but you have to start using time out at a very early age.!!!

I believe in both. There is an age where spanking is not appropriate and time out or grounding is more effective. Fortunately, I have not had to use spanking as a punishment for my children accept for a couple of times when they were around 2 or 3 yrs old. Usually the "fear of Mom look" works better than anything. Once they get a little older, spanking doesn't do any good anyway. Taking cartoons, video games, and time from friends seems to do the trick.

My parents spanked me and my brothers among other forms of punishment and we all turned out pretty good. All of us are productive, hard working adults who do our best to uphold the law.

Social workers will tell you that there is a fine line between properly spanking a child and abuse. A friend of mine had an abusive husband who I saw chase his teenage daughter out of the house swinging a belt at her because she wouldn't jump up from her homework and go weed the vegetable garden for him. She went to school the next day with bruises all over her legs and back and arm. Like I said there is a fine line between punishment and abuse.

Social services defines proper spanking of a child take place when a parent spanks the child with a bare hand on the bottom.

I have to disagree with you on this one Buttercup. I have a niece who hasnt been spanked her entire life, she was given the "time out" punishment, and no way it worked on her. Shes older now, but when she was a child, if she would do something that she knew she shouldnt do and would get into trouble for it, she would just do it and then go sit in the corner without even being told. She knew her "time outs" were a joke and they didnt bother her one bit, or stop her from doing things she shouldnt. Of course all children are different, and if time out works, thats great. But if a child gets in the mind set that the consequence to their actions is going to be nothing more than sitting on the couch for an hour with no TV or PS3, then time out isnt going to work. I was spanked when I was a child and I think Ive turned out ok. Ive never been arrested, done illegal drugs, drank excessively, stolen or robbed, assaulted, murdered, or raped anyone. I dont think my Mom felt very good about spanking me either, I think she felt dissapointment more than anything.

Spanking, or any form of punishment (as long as it doesn't cross over into assault etc) should be left to the discretion of the parent.

Cheers

My parents hated spanking me. It didn't make them happy, just like it doesn't make me happy to smack my dog but sometimes they gotta learn a lesson :/

Since I am the most hated former educator, LOL...I will relate this to secondary education.

Tennessee and Texas have the lowest discipline problems in the nation, why???? Because the teachers are allowed to freely use corporal punishment to correct a child's behavior. There are some stipulations, I believe for a first time offender, the punishment needs to be less severe (5 lashings) and there needs to be a fellow educator or staff member in presence.

Corporal punishment may not work the first time, but it usually gets the point across after the second. It is the infliction of physical pain and to be honest nothing works better. Our education system is too soft on children; they give detention (boo hoo), a suspension (just a vacation), expulsion (more time to spend playing video games). The students who receive corporal punishment get their correction through the use of a paddle and they do not look pleasant, and they get to be publicly embarrassed in front of their classmates, which in itself will keep a student in line.

So, for a parent, it is effective and it keeps children in line. Do not use it excessively and since you're a parent, use your leverage, take that XBOX and cell phone away if the child doesn't want to conform and act correctly. Excessive spanking do result in rebellious children, so you do need to not be so swift to undo the belt.

i was raised up you got your ass spanked. now days alot of people dont do that any more cause of the law. now if you just beat your kid for the hell of it then i can see were the law should step in, but not if they are misbehaving and you give them a good ass whooping nothing wrong with that i have had my fare share of them growing up as a kid and they made me see the light ha. i believe if more kids got spanked then there wouldnt be so many on drugs and gangs and into all other kinds of trouble. there are times when i am shoping and a kid is acting up i think alot of parents are afraid to spank in public not me if they need it no matter were they are then spank them!!!!

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Taurus

Someone is very short-tempered, and they're liable to fly off the handle at a moment's notice. Maybe they're feeling vulnerable in some way or are desperately trying to defend what they see as their territory. Be sensitive to this and don't goad them into being even more irritable or upset than they are already. Frankly, it's just not worth it.
