Travel troubleshooter: Lost Amtrak tickets are lost money

I'm ticket clerk and yes the tickets are lost money. Amtrak is testing e ticket tech but it is not in place yet. The difference between air and rail is that there is ticketing done on board as well as in stations and the e ticket tech is not yet in place for this. It is being tested. Tickets are important docs and should be treated as such. There is a refund procedure after 6 months, and a 75 dollar fee off the top to get the refund. Amtrak used to re issue tickets for a 35 dollar fee, however the company was losing a ton of money due to "lost ticket" fraud. Airlines don't issue tickets en route in the air, railroads do issue tickets on board and that en route tech, again, is still being tested. The company is under a great deal of pressure to become profitable and tighten up the accounting revenue procedures and taxpayers do not want to pay for your lost ticket. The bottom line is that people need to be responsible for their personal affairs regardless of technology. If you lose yoru ID you can not travel, if you lose your ticket you must repurchase. Amtrak has a nationwide policy but operates several commuter railroads as well is partnering with commuter rail and state departments of transportation. If you lose your commuter or subway ticket it is not replaceable for free and neither is your amtrak ticket.

Commuter or subway tickets are at most a couple of bucks. I misplaced six tickets and had to repurchase all six. I've lost an airline ticket in Tokyo airport and with proper ID I was reissued a new one. I had evidence of my reservation, reservation confirmation number, ID, credit card used for purchase but all were denied. I will never travel by Amtrak again. They will never be profitable under such policies as they will drive passengers away. I have many modes of transportation available and I chose amtrak for fun although I was hardly on time. Never again

soma64 seems forget that profits are always driven by the consumer, and this policy is not consumer friendly. To compare rail travel with air travel, and then commuter rail travel is absurd. Air travel allows you to print boarding passes via kiosks if you lose them by entering confirmation information, and with proper i.d an individual cannot use someone else's pass. Amtrak has the same i.d requirement and confirmations, but yet they are having trouble with fraud. How does this happen if I can only board with my ticket and my i.d. Also, commuter rails do not have the same confirmation and i.d process, so it seems fair that a ticket would have to be repurchased because there are no checks and balances. This is clearly a scam by Amtrak, and I hope more awareness is brought to light so that consumers can protest.

they are crooks, period. My 70 yr old sister had a$ 554 ticket. lost it. They left the cabin empty as she stayed behind with her receipts.. amazing. She is going to sue, has contacted multiple attorneys general with Utube and social sites to follow as Amtrack really stuck it to her. This kind of publicity hopefully stops this asinine policy.
