Does anyone know what these 2 "sweepstakes" places are that opened along the 4 lane recently? Seems to me its likely a front for some kind of shady activity or is it the indians testing the waters for their casino? With all the lights & neon it looks like the peep show places in San Fran or what used to be in times square!

Interstate or international gambling, I can't remember which. Legal loophole that has come up in NC law. The gambling is elsewhere, but you can enter it or monitor it from the sweepstakes stores. Legal and reasonably honest so I have read in statewide media. As good a way to lose lots of money as any I guess. As for me, all casino's/sweepstakes places are for suckers...so I let Harrah's in Cherokee sucker me for about 100 bucks a year spread over two visits. That's about the cost of a night out on the town anyway. Know what you are willing to lose, and stop at that, whether you lose it in ten minutes or in two hours.

How is what I asked blaming anything on indians? It was a question, lots of companies do whats called "test marketing" to see if a business or product will work in a particular area before investing, I'd say that would be giving them credit for being smart business people, not a bash of any kind but different strokes for different folks I guess.

The sweepstakes shops have nothing to do with any sort of a casino ..... what you do is buy a calling card, go to a machine and you're actually playing sweepstake games online .... that's how they get away with it ... no money actually changes hands except to buy the calling cards.

I drove by the "sweepstakes" place tonight @11:30 and the parking lot had lots of cars. People must have lots of $ if they can afford to go piss it away at that place.

From what I understand, all these sweepstakes places will have to shut down by December 1, 2010. There was already a law in place making their operation illegal, but they had found a loophole in that law by having people purchase the calling cards instead of paying cash to play. So the NC lawmakers closed that loophole. I've heard all kinds of arguments about their existence. Those floating around were: They weren't paying taxes. Their machines were rigged to produce an expected payout for the company eliminating "chance". So it was a different situation that the casino with regulated machines. I've never been in one of those sweepstakes places. I'm not against gambling. What a person does with his own money is his own business, but he should be made aware if he is playing for "chance" or on a machine that has been predetermined.

I dont have anything against gambling per sea but I'll be happy to see these places gone, they trash the place up IMNSHO. If I wanted to live around crap like that I'd move to Nevada!

Grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

More people should live by the serenity prayer above ... it would save a lot of angst concerning things one cannot change.
