Years back, local youth who just didn't fit in school sports or local athletic programs had another option. That being the local P.A.L. Boxing program. A local municipal police officer headed it up and it was supported by department heads and political officials. The dividends from mentoring young people and keeping them from a life of crime can never be calculated. What the hell happen to that program?
I had the occasion to visit what is now known as Muncie's P.A.L. and to say the least, the facility is a rat hole! There is no supervision, there is no organization, it's filthy, no mentoring, no volunteers to speak of and no light at the end of the tunnel. Why doesn't the current chief of police who's authority and responsibility falls under the program do something?
With all the vacant buildings that could be obtained for the program and all the creative ways to finance it, why doesn't someone get off their duffs and find someone who knows what they are doing and bring Muncie back into the amateur boxing spotlight? Young men and women would benefit beyond belief with a program such as this. And when I say "find someone", I mean someone who will work and not use it as a footstool to keep from doing work. Come on!
