Well now Amon, you and I both know that Powell is nothing more than a Liberal in Republican clothing...the only thing we can hope for is that when Obama get finished creating this huge government, there are government jobs for all of us. |

Obama is just a politician like all the rest. That's why we need a viable third party. BUT, Before it's all said and done Obama could actually lessen the size of government by eliminating a bunch of these alphabet agencies created by the conservative republicans going back to Reagan.

Yes, I do think it was Reagan that created the first Drug czar...but remember what an economy Jimmy Carter left. Reagan did the right thing by cutting taxes to make jobs. The only spending he did was was in order to bankrupt the Soviet Union with defence systems. |

The had their pictures on Fox news briefly... I knew he had hired some but I had no idea it was that many...(I only saw them briefly so I don't remember all of them.. I'll try to find out)...The reason for the "Czars" is so these people can operate pretty much on their own without even being confirmed by the Senate...A way around the Bush so to speak...(No pun intended) |

WHY?????? Why do you do this? Can no one carry on any conversation on any subject without you finding a reason to go after me? Is your first and last thoughts of the day about ME? Obsession is not that healthy for you. |

Maybe it's your right leaning and my left leaning but I have a different take on Reagan. First, Russia was already bankrupt and Reagan had nothing to do with it. They were going down no matter who was our president at the time. You have to look at the decades of poor management after WWII. They had a flawed system to start with and they bit off more than they could chew. Reagan's "impossible" SDI only served to pad the pockets of his buddies in the defense industry. |
|||
You couldn't be more correct, they already had a flawed system and Reagan exploited that fact. Sadly, I see this nation takeing those same socialist values. Yep, I am a right leaning Independant that is glad that people are finally seeing what startleing similarities there are with the current administration and the old socialist republic. P.S. I still think Reagan was one of the greatest presidents since WWII..(minus that whole Iran Contra deal)...LOL! |

Personally I think that's an insult to a nice lady like IRC but for myself, I don't care. I wish I were a witch...I would love to cast some spells. You'll have to come up with worse insults than that to bother me. Neanderthal! |

Thanks, Shootist, for the list of czars....how did such a Russian word find a home in the USA? I had no idea there were so many or what their duties are that are so different from what we've had before. Maybe they just now have a title. Have no idea....just saying. I'm sure they don't have as much power as the cabinet heads who must be confirmed by Congress....maybe they're just more or less advisors to Obama??? I'm all for whatever will help the country to recover from the mess we're in. I know so many people who have been affected by this poor economy that it just makes me sick. Here in my old age I can't enjoy my retirement because I'm always worrying about close friends or family members who have been clobbered by the economy....and no respite in sight.

1 In 1982 alone, Reagan signed into law not one but two major tax increases. The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (TEFRA) raised taxes by $37.5 billion per year and the Highway Revenue Act raised the gasoline tax by another $3.3 billion. According to a recent Treasury Department study, TEFRA alone raised taxes by almost 1 percent of the gross domestic product, making it the largest peacetime tax increase in American history. An increase of similar magnitude today would raise more than $100 billion per year. In 1983, Reagan signed legislation raising the Social Security tax rate. This is a tax increase that lives with us still, since it initiated automatic increases in the taxable wage base. As a consequence, those with moderately high earnings see their payroll taxes rise every single year. In 1984, Reagan signed another big tax increase in the Deficit Reduction Act. This raised taxes by $18 billion per year or 0.4 percent of GDP. A similar-sized tax increase today would be about $44 billion. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 raised taxes yet again. Even the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which was designed to be revenue-neutral, contained a net tax increase in its first 2 years. And the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 raised taxes still more. The year 1988 appears to be the only year of the Reagan presidency, other than the first, in which taxes were not raised legislatively. Of course, previous tax increases remained in effect. According to a table in the 1990 budget, the net effect of all these tax increases was to raise taxes by $164 billion in 1992, or 2.6 percent of GDP. This is equivalent to almost $300 billion in today's economy. OMG, Reagan, god of the Republican raised taxes?? I wonder if even Obama will be able to match that. |

Reagan brought the bankruptcy of the Soviet Union along....He pushed them over the brink as it were... His massive military buildup after our worst President in history(Carter if you didn't know) CUT the military, was one big reason the Soviet Union went bankrupt... trying to spend to keep up with us... |

That's the point of the CZARS.. they have MORE power than the cabinet members.. they can do pretty much what they want to do, because they are responsible to no one except the President... By the way....The "Car Czar"...drives a Honda....:) |
