According to U.S.Fish and Wildlife studies, there is no reason to believe the trumpeter ever lived in Wisconsin in the past, so it would be a non native.
The study appeared in Wilson Journal, an ornithological publication.

Also, there are no studies showing damage by mute swans. Even the state of Maryland, the promoters of the killing program, has no study showing problems caused by the mute swans. Their loss of eelgrass is due to chicken and pig farms on the coast, as well as out of hand development, all dumping into the Chesapeake Bay. As to scaring a flock of terns, to take over their nesting area, mute swans do not nest on pebbles, where the terns nest, they nest in the reeds. As to any harm to humans, there are no incidents documented by hospital or medical records,
only stories spread by swan haters for their own reasons, usually to keep the DNR happy. The trumpeter, which is much larger and louder than the mutes is the agressor here and belongs in Canada, where it comes from, but it will, instead, become a trophy bird. Dillon Ripley, head of the Smithsonian asked "what kind of man would kill a swan," and he was a world class, famous hunter, but not an outright killer. We have too little beauty in our lives today, neither the swans nor Wisconsin deserve
this program being pushed to sell hunting licenses
on trumpeters.

I didn't see your note until today, sorry.
I know you have swans in your part of the world, too, and that there have been programs to control populations. The mute swans here have never been more than 16,000 across all of United States and Canada, and that number was given by the governmenet, so is not reliable. I am still trying to stop the killing, here.

I consider the world is changing, because we make it change. I don't see any justified reason to kill such lovely birds. If they are noisy... are we gonna also destroy all the other things like trailers and Harley Bikes.
Common, every single living being has the same rights as I do to live in this planet. Besides... how much will it cost to kill all those swans? Why the Milwaukee Government wants to stop adding flouride to the water if it costs only 5,000 a year? Better put the money for the swans killing to protect our kids teeth, for instance?
DNR just wants to control everything and to get money through any "campaign" they can come with.
Is not fair. Again has to do, once more with money and power.
