ACLU: Gang Meeting For Hispanics Only

A Gainesville student says she and her Hispanic classmates were singled out for an assembly about poor test scores, gangs and sex.

Now, in the meantime, of the 29 other female classmates of Perez, 29 were failing, 14 were pregnant, and 23 were on probation for drug and gang related activities..

This was poorly thought out at best, racist at worse. They are sensitive kids at that age, that should not have been singled out like this. The SCHOOL had poor scores. They did not drop the curve for the whol school and the parents should be upset.

Did the school base its selection of attendees based on objective criteria such as grade/test scores or based on race/ethnicity?

I really doubt that the school announced, "Ok, all you Messican illegal wetbacks show up for an assembly at 2 o'clock...and don't steal nothin' on the way."

Have we gotten so "politically correct" that any effort to help troubled kids is a bad thing? The hispanic community does have a serious problem with teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drugs. If the kids were being counseled, and it helped even one, what is the big deal? If Weight Watchers holds a meeting, it would primarily be for overweight kids, wouldn't it?

How much you want to bet the assembly had to be conducted in Spanish? If they had had a whole school assembly, it would have taken twice as long as each sentence had to be translated.
Also, if the bulk of Latino students were having problems, kudos to the school for setting up a special program to meet their needs as a group.

If there was any logic to that argument the explain this...

administrators at the school made an announcement over the public address system requiring ninth-grade Hispanic girls report to a classroom on campus.

Perez says more than 30 girls were there. Perez says another, separate assembly was announced over the p.a. system for ninth-grade Hispanic boys.

So do boys and gilr hispanics speak a different language too?

The issues that needed addressed could be addressed to all of them at once...why even the need to separate them? If it was sex ed then okay but why not address that to all the teens? There is no reasonable excuse for this....

You yourself in private have talked about the behavior and beliefs of Hispanic men- maybe the girls were separated because they would be too intimidated to talk in front of the boys?

You must have me confused with one of your many other women, I don't recall my ever discussing my opinion about hispanic men with anyone. I have yet to form any distinct opinion about Hispanic men as a group.

While I am well aware of the stereotypes concerning men in general I try to remember that individuals do not automatically fit into those broad generalizations.

You are certainly wrong as I have never stated that one group of men are more controlling of women than any other group though many individual men are and think they have the right to be. Just as many are jerks in general. It would be convenient if you could distinquish one from another so easily but it must be done on an individual basis for any accuracy.

Although I did call HB Local a beaner once...but directly to him not behind his back..I'm not a passive-agressive like so many are...

And I continued to hand him a FUN sized candy bars with the N cut off making it a FU size..but other than that..<shrug>

Alzheimer's kicking in huh? I know you remember me from when I arrived on topix, and it was always WP MO. Until I moved here to be with him.
