Myself and a male friend were entering the Cranford's grocery store location on Hwy 5 in the Hot Springs Village, Arkansas area when an employee by the name of Keith Elmore was exiting. As he left the store we heard him say "Queers" as he passed, making eye contact as to let us know whom it was directed towards. This action came as a total shock and we immediately went to inform the store manager of this hate reference. The manager on duty known to us only as "Jim" apologized for Mr. Elmore's commentary, but made no effort or attempt to reprimand him which came as even more of a surprise. Later we learned that Keith Elmore is the son of Doug Elmore. Doug Elmore is also a manager at the same store. No preferential treatment here, only nepotism. I have known Doug from years ago when he worked at Piggly Wiggly on Park Avenue in Hot Springs. Doug has always been friendly to me and my family members, this is why I can't believe that his son has adopted this small minded mentality.
What a shame that in this day and age when average everyday people cannot visit their local market without being victimized. It's absolutely uncalled for, unsolicited, not to mention unprofessional. Thank goodness for Wal-Mart and Kroger! My car can find it's way there just as easy as it can to Cranford's. I could never imagine an episode like this happening at either one of these businesses. If it did, I would feel confident that the store management would take measures to correct the situation, unlike at Cranford's. I promptly urge and encourage that if anyone feels as strongly about this issue as we do to sponsor a boycott of all Cranford's store locations. Hate only breeds into hate, and quite frankly if you patronize Cranford's, your grocery dollars support this bigotry. If you wish, feel free to contact Cranford's Corporate offices or the local District Manager Terry Baldy and tell them what you think of their employee's values.

Yes, Cranfords seems to have conered the market on rednecks and rude teenage girls. Glad to see it's not just me. I've been treated badly by their help on several occasions and have sworn that I'll never shop there again. That store on highway 5 has been going downhill since it opened.

I agree with you about shopping at Walmart and Kroger, My truck makes it there just fine, and their prices are not as inflated as at Cranfords. Let's see, no attitude and more money in my pocket, WOW what a deal!

Contact the ACLU, Act Up, The Anti-defamation League and the Human Rights Campaign. I'm sure they would be interested in knowing about their antics. Have you sent this article to THE VILLAGE VOICE yet? I live in the Village and this is really unsettling. The G.M. at Cranford's by the Diamonte gate and I butted heads last year over the price scanners overcharging my Mother on several items. I told him if he can't get with the program, get out of the retail biz! What a class A jerk.

What is the number of the corporate offices? I have a few choice words for them. I think Mr. Elmores behaviour is appalling and he should be fired without a doubt. Maybe what he really needs a reality check and someone should give it to him!

I just started working at cranfords on hyw 5! I'm sorry for the treatment you received on last visits. Hopefully I will go into the new job with a new task. Make sure our customers see that we are friendly. And I can assure you one thing I was graded on was friendliness and my attitude he said that their main goal is to have a great attitude everyday at work & assure the customers of our store! I hope your opinion changes soon!

The Kid/Kids should have been fired on the spot. If these kids cannot show respect for other people, they should not be allowed to work around other people.

I think Doug should be commended for his action. These are kids and probably their first jobs. While it was offensive that the boy said that, I think this is going way over board. As for the store not doing anything about it....that was an internal issue and they were right to apologize and handle it internally... As a customer I am sure you wanted the smug satisfaction to see the boy taken down a peg or two, but in reality how they handle it is not your concern. You got a sincere apology from the store. If the worse thing you have to deal with is one teenage boy calling you a queer as he walks out of a store, probably even off the clock, then you are blessed with a pretty peaceful life. If it is something you deal with a lot then I pray it gets better for you. But don't take your anger and aggression with others out one kid that needs a lesson in sensitivity and comportment. That makes you look like a bully to someone who is an easier target than the people who may piss you off and you say and do nothing. I would be mad, too, but you give it more credit than it deserves to react this way.

I went in the "other Cranford's," the one at the other end of the Village, on Hwy. 7, to get some money someone had sent me by Western Union. The gal (I won't say she was a lady) on the Quick Checkout register gave me a LONG form to fill out. I filled it out, but she never came back to the "little booth" where they dispense Western Union $$$'s, so I stood there while she waited on EIGHT (I counted them, 8) customers! I finally got in her line and presented "the Form." I commented that I had been waiting, and that this was my first time in Cranford's in a FEW YEARS, as they always had to "price check" at least 1 item, and when they found that my price was right, they would correct it for me, but not in the register, thereby overcharging EVERY CUSTOMER who came later on! She got all upset and I asked to see a manager. She told me she was the manager, but she called some other fellow named "Doug." He said he was the asst. mgr. She later told me she was the "customer service manager," and I told her that was what I wanted, some customer service. She told Doug to "get him out of here." I explained the situation, but Doug took NO ACTION against her. He told me the Western Union office was closed for the day. It was 3 p.m. and the store closes around 8 p.m. I called Western Union and reported it to them. They told me an alternate location where I could obtain the $$$ sent to me, which I used the next day. Cranford's has no concern for the customer, as shown by these actions. I heard that Kroger considered buying their stores, and I wish they would, but I think the price was too high. I shop WalMart, Kroger, and Dollar General only! Occasionally I go into town (Hot Springs) and shop at Fred's. I don't plan to go into ANY Cranford's again! I threatened to contact their corporate office, but I couldn't find it on the Internet.

i feel the boy it being his first job or not should have been fired. him getting any less action for his offense is not enough. if i said anything of the sort in my profession i would be let go on the spot. im sure in the empolyee handbook that he was supposed to read he read how to treat customers.

I just recently worked at cranfords on hwy7. Let share with my opinion. We do value our customers and strive to help them if we can. If not then we find a alternative solution. Just bc some guys didnt like what came out of the boy mouth doesnt mean that you have to go and slander the companys name. I worked with doug and believe me he is a great boss but he does not condone that type of behavior.

I was working that night and I was standing right next to the female. You were very rude and wanted us to drop everything just for you. You were told that we were extremely busy and the customers at the registers came first. You then proceeded to start degraded the female and even myself. You were getting real aggressive and I was the one that called doug up front. Yes she did tell doug to get you out of the store bc you were causing a scene and being very irate and abusive. Then as you were walking out the doors you called both of b@@@@es. Shortly after you left you had an unidentified woman call and try to give a pity sob story to get us to help you. It was a saturday and we close the western unipn down about 3, so food for thought...Act like an a@@hole and you will get told to leave the store
