Did I say I'm special? Do you always ask questions about something that was never said?

Prejudice exists for a reason. People talk about rednecks and yankees and blacks and whatever other group for a reason. It's all based in truth. Are people from around here typically overweight and have bad grammar? Sure. Do I think that all black people are friendly, to the point that I'm going to drive through downtown Memphis in the middle of the night with my windows down and radio blasting? Hell no. Welcome to reality. I'm sorry that you are offended by prejudice. You seem to be spewing quite a bit of it yourself, in saying that "everyone" here is racist. That's like me saying all black people are in gangs.

I've seen racism here too. I remember watching the KKK march in front of the courthouse as a kid. I also remember seeing citizens throw stuff at them and boo them and they never came back after that. So if everyone is racist, why did they get run out of town?

The headquarters of the KKK aren't "just down the road," they are about 45 minutes away. I don't consider that down the road. You make it sound like they are chilling out in Gassville or something.

Square miles of town DOES indicate economic growth in this case because we have added quite a few new businesses. You've been here 7 years and act like you know this town, but I'm telling you it has grown leaps and bounds in the last decade and more. The population of MH has not grown but the outskirts have, and as you know everyone goes to MH for everything they need. Mallard Point is not "in" MH but there are a ton of new houses back there that were built in the last decade. The work force group has grown at the same rate as the retiree group since most businesses here are service-oriented. As the population grows, we require more workers to do the jobs. This isn't rocket science. Hell, it's not even computer science. You should be able to work through this if you take some Midol and chill out.

And for the record, when talking about demographics, retirees DO count. I don't know why you would exclude them from the population count. Just because they are retired doesn't mean they don't produce income, pay taxes, and provide jobs. You could argue that they are more important to the growth of this area than the working class.

I'm sorry that you spent that much time getting a degree in a bubble field, one that we all knew would pop eventually. When you go to school for the same thing as everyone else, obviously the growth cannot sustain and now you have set yourself up for failure. I went into the IT field at a very early age and while I'm glad that I learned how to work on all of my own stuff, I also had the foresight to not put all of my eggs in one basket. Which is not necessarily me patting myself on the back, but a statement of how having common sense can be so valuable. Having a master's degree does not mean you have common sense, obviously.

There are IT jobs here but they are all locked up, except Brooks and Jeffrey seems to hire a new one every couple of years. But with that IT experience, why are you just limiting yourself to this area? There are businesses here that have people drive up from Little Rock and other cities to work on their computers. Go out and market yourself, give them a good price, and let the businesses get your name out for you.

If that doesn't work locally, expand your reach. Do something online. I'm not sure if you have the personality for sales (and selling yourself to businesses is a form of sales) but you've got the degree, so it's your own fault you aren't using it. People that sit back and blame the economy for not having a job are weak. Anybody can get a job. With the internet giving us a worldwide reach, there is no reason you can't make money with your degree. You can remote in and fix computers or whatever it is that you specialize in.

But if you think there aren't opportunities here, then you obviously don't have the vision to see what you have a front row seat for. This area is blowing up and the older business owners need a way to get up to speed with technology in so many ways.

As bitchy and wrong as you are, I do respect you for taking care of your parents. I just wish that you wouldn't be so narrow-minded about the area. I'm sorry that people don't like your mixed relative, but you should know that many people don't care. And the ones that do, feel that way for a reason in most cases... due to their experiences in bigger cities before they moved here to get away from minorities and high taxes. Like it or not, it's the truth.

Racism is still everywhere, drugs are everywhere. Not to sound bad or anything, but, my wife will have her drug and alcohol abuse degree in October, so the more abusers the better the job security. That sounds bad, but I have no other way to put it, I don't mean it in a bad way. My concern with racism is a friend of mine and her daughter, my Goddaughter, will move in with me eventually. I don't want to put a little girl in a situation that would be bad for her. If I have to I will home school her. I expect some sort of looks and behavior, that happens here in New York, the funny part is New York has more racism and rednecks than anywhere I have ever travelled. I thank all of you for your input, even the negative, everything is usefull.

@Bojangles, what about a drive-in movie theater?

@Goodolegal, congratulations on earning a masters in computer science, I am currently working on a Bachelos of Art in Cultural Anthropology, which I hope will come in handy somewhere in the Arkansas area.

@Crabapple, These would be Topix Tougnhguys, kinda like FAcebook Gansgtas, you know the guys on Facebook that take photos of themselves looking tough with pictures of Miley Cyrus and The Power Puff Girls in the background.

@The Truth, you could have put something witty...

Yankee Doodle, actually a drive in theater would probably do well here. The higher retirement population would eat that up, plus it would give them a place to take their classic cars on weekends. There are a LOT of classic car owners here and they are always looking for something to do. You could get into a theater pretty inexpensively I think, with the technology now. Just get a huge screen or build a wall and paint it white, and use a projector and computer to run it. Sell popcorn and basic food and I think you would do well. The only catch is people won't pay much to get in, so keep the admission fee low but make your money on the extra sales. Keep costs low and you could really make this work. Great idea! The only down sides would be that the sun doesn't go down until 8:30 PM right now, and once it goes down by 7 it will probably be too cool outside for the older folks in convertibles. But if you set this thing up the right way, I think you could draw people from a really broad area. Some would drive an hour or more to get here for that.

I heard there had been a drive-in there before , but recently shut down. I could not find any info on that at all. I'm thinking if I make the move this will be the option I focus on, I love movie, so I think this would be fun. Thanks so much for your input.

Yeah that should be right up your alley!

I have heard about a drive-in theater too but I've never seen it or been to it, and I've lived here my whole life. I have no idea where it was. Obviously they did a poor job of marketing.

You could generate income during the daylight hours on that land too by opening a swap meet. I think people would really get into that here. Sell a space to a vendor for a few bucks and let them set up tables or just drop a tailgate and sell from there. It would generate a little more income for you, and also get a whole other demographic out to your place to see what the drive-in looks like when they otherwise might not go. The more exposure, the better.:-)

UMMM EXCUSE ME CRABAPPLE, I personally expierenced racism here in Mountain Home., My sister in law is half black and had a bad experience with my neighbor 3 houses down. I intoduced them and she put out her hand to shake it like I do when u r introduced. The asshole refused to shake her hand and said No Thanks. Please will drone on this stupid forum ADMIT there r a.lot of racists here? My neighbors on the other side suggested I sell my house myself so i wouldnt have to sell it to any black family. Like there's a Li.e of black families just waiting to move out here to Mallard Point.
I'm sorry to hear that Goodolegal, but let's not judge all the people in Mountain Home by your neighbors. They surely must be racists to act so hateful. Unfortunately, there are racists everywhere, but it doesn't seem to be that obvious here in Mountain Home. I'm just saying that it doesn't seem like that kind of a town to me.

@Cross Bow, "wigger race traitor", I have been called a wigger, I grew up in a community that revolved around hip-hop music when I was young. This influenced the way I dressed and acted. It did not change who I was or am today, it did make me into an open minded man. I have learned that there is no difference in race, just intelligence, the ignorant flourish in racism. If you could be so kind to explain to me what a "wigger race traitor" is, or why you feel that another man, because of the color of his skin, is less of a man than you, I would be interested, since I don't understand.

Because I don't judge individuals by the color of their skin makes me a "race traitor"? I feel sorry for you "CrossBow". You really ought to pray for forgiveness along with the other racists on this blog. If you think all white people are angels you are really "out to lunch". Why can't the racists here realize there are good and evil in ALL races?
