I am doing a photo journal for a major magazine on living in poverty in northeast Tennessee. These photos are of homes identified as someone living in poverty. To qualify I need to know where the grungiest, dirtiest, junkiest, cruddiest, crummiest, filthiest, messiest and shabbiest homes are. Just give me a road name or address. There will also be a website showing these photographs; dedicated to the White Trash of northeast Tennessee.

I completed photographing Unicoi County and will start Johnson County soon. This has been a revelation for me. I learned many things cause poverty and I learned many do not want to escape it; in fact, they wallow in it. Some people are just filthy and not poor at all. My Yankee magazine does not understand the difference in poor people and White Trash, they just want photos.

Are there any decent restaurants in Johnson County? By restaurant I am mean a balanced meal not fast food.

You'll have to decide for yourself which are the "-iest". But you can find candidates simply by driving out of Mountain City proper and turning up almost any road in the county. Sometimes you'll find really nice, upscale pockets but the grunge will be either on the way to these pockets or very close by.

"Poverty" around here is a little bit slippery of a word. Some "poor" folks are land rich, cash poor. They could move way up the income scale by selling some or all of their land, but that would be a mortal sin in their value system. Some people aren't really poor; they're just slobs and their property looks like they're poor. They collect junk and trash the way Jay Leno collect cars.

By just about any standards of "decent", decent restaurants include Suba's and Tributary; Suba's has been, in my experience, the more consistent. Depending on your standards, you might include Poblano's (Mexican), Panda Garden (Chinese), Teammates (pizza, subs, salad bar), La Cuchina (Italian, new).

There are lots of diners and glorified diners that stay in business by meeting SOMEONE'S standards.

You might go up Snyder Road all the way to the top of the hill. This is an example of what IKHW was talking about.

You need to add in your article that not all North East Tn. people are trashy.
There are unclean people everywhere in this world.

If the editor of the magazine has any sense they will tell you to be careful of the words that you use in the article (if you are also writing the article and not just the photographer).
The words you have used in your post might piss people off and that would impact the sales of the magazine.

I would suggest Ackerson Creek Road and Furnace Road. Ackerson Creek Road is about the worst I have seen. We have poor here that are clean and care for their property. Then we have trash that would live no better regardless what they had.

Maybe you need to find another location to look for people who may be down on their luck. Did you consider living in poverty may have always been a way of life for them and that's their normal? As someone who has adopted this county as home, I find your request insulting. The majority of the people in Johnson County would be offended to know that you were coming to take pictures of this beautiful mountainous area only to be exploited by your magazine. Actually, after thinking about it, maybe you just need to find another subject matter to photograph.

But that "majority" won't do anything to get those grungiest, dirtiest, junkiest, cruddiest, crummiest, filthiest, messiest and shabbiest homes cleaned up, will it? If those homes ain't here IN QUANTITY in this "beautiful mountainous area", then there won't be enough pictures for the magazine to use, will there? No grunge, no pics, no exploitation.

Something could happen in YOUR life to cause YOU to lose all your land and money and stocks and bond, whatever you have.
Like the crash of 1929 when the rich thought they were going to get more more more and they lost everything.

Most people who live that way are that way for a reason of their own doing. Not all but most. I think its a big mistake to think many of the want to change enough to work at it. And if you are trying to quote the Bible about judging, read the whole verse not just the part you like.

The magazine I am working for did a piece back in the 60’s when President Johnson started the War on Poverty. I will just be taking photos and recording addresses, my words and opinion will be used. As I understand, they will select which people they want to interview from the photos I send. They have already sent an interviewer to a couple of homes I photographed in Unicoi County. One of the places was featured in their 1960 piece. It is worse today than it was back then. I have copies of each place they profiled in the 60’s with instructions to find it and shoot current photos. There were no addresses back then; everything was a rural route so finding them is difficult. I have peoples names from the 60’s but most have died. Most of the places I followed up on are now occupied by their children. Some have good jobs but choose to live in filth and squalor.

Thanks for the road names and the restaurant advice. I will be in Johnson County tomorrow.

Send me a message if you have specific places I can look at. I did not use my registered name in fear no one would respond or would give me misleads.

OK, so if you were wanting some help in finding poverty stricken folks here in Mountain City, then why on Gods green Earth would you title your thread "Trashiest Homes in Mountain City"?
In my opinion there is a HUGE difference in poverty sticken and trashiest. One is a curcumstance and the other is a choice.
I think you need to rethink your approach before you come to this county and get your butt kicked by some of these "good ole' boys" that just might take offense to you refering to them as trashy.
Just saying!!!

While your Photos may help to bring attention to the Poverty in the area, which could turn out to be a "good thing"...you do need to lose the, "I'm better than you" attitude, Dude, if you expect to get any cooperation...IMO!
