One thing is pretty sure: the sheriff won't do anything about it based on an anonymous whine on topix.net .

While I'm here, what is an "Assualt" weapon? If that's just a typo and you meant to write "Assault" weapon, what is an "Assault" weapon? Is there another kind of weapon? I have several firarms, knives, etc. and none of them has ever assaulted anybody. Or anything, for that matter.

But there are people that you want to assault with those several firearms.

Instead of posting on Topix that you doubt that Sheriff Mike Reece will "do something" pick up the phone and call him and tell that you heard assault rifles being shot close to your home.

He will send a Deputy out or he might come out himself.

There are assault rifle that can be legally bought and owned in Tennessee.
If the assault rifle is legal then Mike can't do anything.
If the assault rifle is illegal then Mike can take the rifle from the owner and take the owner to jail.

Isn't one of you going to gleefully point out that "firearms" has an "e"?

Or did everyone in this crowd think I spelled it correctly?

There is no such thing as an "illegal assault rifle". There are, at best, illegally POSSESSED assault rifles.

Furthermore, there is little chance that anybody around here is firing an assault rifle. And little chance that a topix.net poster would recognize one from its sound.

I can own up to being wrong.

I thought that the regular Joe Blow couldn't own Military style weapons.
That's what I thought of when I saw the words "assault weapons".

I know there is some kind of weapons that I would have to have a class 3 license or Federal permit or something like that.

There are to many laws for me to keep up with concerning "Gun Laws".

I'm only concerned with owning a pistol with enough rounds to stop someone from entering my home that wasn't invited.

My main point was someone saying that the Sheriff wouldn't "do something" before even calling the S.D. and talking to him.

That's what I meant.
Someone having an automatic weapon.
As far as I know automatic weapons can't be owned by the regular Joe Blow, only semi automatic.

But I don't know for a fact that's just what I have heard.

That doesn't help get closer to any truth. What, to you, constitutes "Military style"? Beretta 9 mm? Military issue; VERY commonly owned by civilians. 1911 Model? Ditto..308 rifle? Ditto. Show me a popular civilian weapon and I'll show you that the military uses or has used it. That, by the way, includes bolt action rifles, lever action rifles, and pump guns.

True. Automatic firearms, commonly referred to as "machine guns", along with explosive devices and a bunch of other stuff all require special licensing, background checks, high taxes and fees. But they aren't _prohibited_ to Joe Blow.

How many rounds is that? How about if "someone" brings a friend? Or a whole bunch of friends?

But, have they been used in recent times...or are you talking WWI and WWII vintage? My question, pertaining to your first answer.

I would like to make a statement or ask a question to counter your last answer, but frankly, I just can't think of One that wouldn't highly offend you and I certainly don't want to do that!:)

I had no intention of having a long discussion about this, all I meant was that if someone illegally had firearms that Mike Reece would do something about it.

The firearms that I'm refering to are Type 2 firearms that an unlicensed person cannot own such as a Machine Gun or an automatic rifle.

Other Type 2 weapons are silencers, short barreled rifles/shotguns, smooth bore pistols, exposives.

When "concerned" said "assault weapon" I figured they had heard "rapid fire" like an automatic rifle and like I said I thought only semi automatic rifles could be bought by civilians, I said I don't know all of the "gun laws".

Readily available "military style assault rifles" compare to real military weapons the way camouflage clothes from Target compare to Army issue BDU. One thing that makes say an M4 knockoff military style is to be able to fire the same ammo and be fitted with bayonets, grenade launchers etc. Contrary to popular belief,.223 ammo is not the same as 5.56 NATO used by the military. Most barrels will fire both but you can quickly destroy your .223 barrel with just a few hundred rounds of frangible military issue 5.56. A barrel design called Wylde fires both with no apparent excess wear but such barrels are rarely found on consumer grade guns because of their cost. I don't want surplus ammo, bayonets or full auto. For that reason I prefer the civilian "assault rifles". They kill coyotes just fine. And I have never had to fix a bayonet to fight off rampaging coyotes. The other issue is magazine capacity. 10 rounds is just fine for my coyote and groundhog shooting. I have no need to have 30 round clips.

Let's see how you feel about that when a pack of 2-legged "coyotes" is coming at you.
