Yep, way back then the bean folks picked a "bean queen" for bean festival! This celebration was held at the fairgrounds where the high school football field is now. Now the "bean queens" were always purty, and probably full of "gas" : > )) You know how it is when you eat lots of beans!!

There was three bean houses in Mountain City, one at the tri-state which was the main one that most people went too and there was one where the Mountain City funeral homr is now and one that that was run by a Marshall man some which was in the parking lot of Food County.

The young Walker guy had a "nick name" in school, but I can't rem what. I know that he drove a nice car and seemed soooo popular, chummed with all the popular crowd. I didn't know at the time that he was the bean man's son.

I remember pickin beans and going to market. Wonder what beans bring a bushel now days? Green beans have bullets too, and I like big bullets and that's where the gas comes from. If ya add a bit of coke or pepsi to pintos or octobers, that helps with some of the dreaded gas-yeah and you don't taste it! Ah, we're all gassy ain't we ; -(

Adding some baking soda to the soaking water (about 2 tbsp.) & then. adding from 1/4 to 1/2 of a tbsp. of baking soda to the beans when they come to a boil when cooking, will also take alot of the gas-producing elements out of both Pintos & Great Northern Beans.
Also, for Great Northern Beans, cook them very slowly (simmer or slightly above), DO NOT stir them & add a very few Red Pepper Flakes to them, at the beginning of cooking process...or put them in a Crock Pot.
The Red Pepper Flakes gives them a wonderful taste & the slow-cooking, no stirring, enhances the flavor, because you don't have to add any additional water.
Delicious & good for you, if you don't add too much seasoning, like ham or bacon. BTW, don't use the Hickory-smoked , if you do use ham or bacon. The Hickory-smoked Ham or Bacon gives them a bad taste. Just use the plain, so it doesn't clash with the taste of the Beans.

I too, picked beans just to get to go to the bean market. That was so much fun throwing beans at the boys. Riding in the back of the truck, with wind blowing through my long hair. Going to the drug store for a soda, then to Blackburns spending the money I made picking beans. I remember Saturday nights in uptown Mountain City. The movie theater. Wish we had uptown back now....what fun.

To the Bean man.... think it was Beanie Walker... Nickname.

Yeah, picking beans was fun if you were a kid.. for the early morning ride. Great way to spend a day and earn money, cold and wet in the AM but by afternoon it was hot... then when it rained !!! some people had to earn money for their family this way, back breaking job !!

When you picked a bushel youd holler "HAMPER" and the guy would come with a burlap sack and empty your bushel basket, and youd get a "ticket'and cash it in at the end of the day it was 50 cents a bushel.

"louie">louis walker-had a nickname>what was it? me and my cousin used to pick beans for our great uncle-only we just mostly played, flirted with the boys, and giggled. Our uncle would get pretty aggravated-and we didn't make a lotta money, wonder why-LOL!
