I think that this topic needs to just stop. I gaurantee that most of these comments are coming from the type of people that get drunk at every football game and is escorted from the stadium. If you haven't noticed, how many people leave Johnson County and do anything with a career in football? Pretty close to none. Students that take part in band have a much higher chance of succeeding in the future than people that kick air filled rubber orbs. There are a number of idiots in the band, I'll agree, but no one should assume that the entire band is worthless. One bad egg in a basket can make the whole lot of them stink. There are a select few that know what they're doing and shouldn't be harped upon, though. None the less, everyone tries, but some just not hard enough. It takes many many years to even scratch the surface on being good on any instrument. High school band is just like a filter, weeding out the ones that should and shouldn't do it afterwards. And please, don't say anything about the director. He's new and is trying so hard to put this thing together. Every band director for the past 6 years has always used the phrase, "It'll be better next year." Maybe it will, maybe it won't, some of us won't be there to see. Mr. Garland, though, is doing a great job and hopefully will stay with us for more than a couple of years. The band has just been battered to death the past couple years because every director wants everything done differently. I just really don't believe that anyone can talk negatively about this program unless they have been a part of it and know how hard it really is. It's by far not just walking around and blowing horns...oh no...there's so much more. If you are going to say something bad about us though, leave your name and number and let me get back with you. I'll be happy to prove you wrong.
I bought a 2001 Johnson County High School Band compact disk at a yard sale last week and played it as I drove down Laurel Creek toward Abingdon. The insert leaflet listed all the members of the band by section. The director of the band was Chris Simmons. About half the CD was filled with selections from Carmina Burana, a composition I had studied in Music Appreciation class at my small college in Virginia over 40 years ago. Johnson County is my new retirement home, hopefully for many years to come, and knowing that those beautifully played compositions were performed by local young people was very moving. Some local friends told us that the band member Saul Garland listed as playing horn on the CD is the present director. My husband and I wish you well, Saul, in building a band that will give you and the students so much pride.
The 2001 CD is worth many times the price I paid for it.

Yeah, as opposed to the football players who brag about getting drunk and sleeping around with anything with the opposite sexual organ? Oh wait, never mind, apparently as long as you play football its okay, even if you get caught your court date will just be put off till the end of season anyway.

My son was in the band for six years and played in the cd you purchased. He (I'm sorry, I have to brag), graduated high school with honors, went on to graduate from college and is now a hard working, tax paying professional. I can't help but believe the band program helped mold his character. He was a good kid, hung out with good "band kids", and never gave us any trouble. Most of "band kids" went on to college, and yes, one of them was Saul Garland. Kudos, Saul. Keep up the good work. To the new music loving members of our community, welcome. Please ignore the idiots who constantly bash hard working kids.As THE great one said, "forgive them, they know not what they do".

Thanks for the support from some of you; the rest of you can take your incorrect grammar, bad hygiene, lack of education and welfare checks and very kindly go to hell. Most of the popularity in Johnson County will end up in trailers, pregnant, and blown up in meth labs. We're proud to work our asses of in this band program. It gets us into college with a life worth living. How many of you commenting on here can say that? I thought so, bitches!

I graduated in 2007 and was a member of band all through middle school and high school.During my first few years, which was when Simmons was there, we were VERY good, even taking second place in one competition, like "Seriously" mentioned. We beat out schools such as Tennessee High! After Simmons left, I did notice that we started to deteriorate. Whenever I visit home from college and talk to my friends I see how they are still suffering. But I'll be damned if I let you people who claim the band sucks sit there and rant about something you know absolutely nothing about. I truly believe that the band will bounce back, and unless you've actually been in band, especially marching band, you have no idea how difficult it is. We bust our butts just like those football players you venture out to see every Friday night. In addition, kids in band are some of the smartest and most level-headed kids you'll ever meet, and have big goals for their future. And as for that crack about how the current director, Saul Garland, is a "homo"(Evil 1) just shows the closed-mindedness of a true jerk. The fact that he's gay has nothing to do with the fact that he's an amazing musician and I'm glad the band once again has a director who has such passion for what he does. So to all the people out there who think the band is just sooooo awful, stuff in a pair of earplugs and shut up!!

All sports teams and bands have to go through rebuilding every so many years. Difficult times don't always bring out the best in us.(Is there some downright meanness here?

From this thread, it looks like different groups in the high school might have their little jealousy fits about other groups.

Posts 20, 21, 52, 55, 56 all have something to say to help make the situation clear, don't they?
Post 55 really says it plain. I'm like #57, and I wonder how many of our band students get through college, how many jocks, how many goths, how many girls, how many boys, etc.

Kids who find something to really get into in high school are lucky.

ok lets get it clear band is a great thing to do in high school but our band is full of idiots who play a song 104 times but cant even get better at it. If you compare our band to a band like e-town we suck big time. talk about the PRIDE of JCHS, there is no PRIDE in that band room

I agree with MC Mom...and Evil 1, you're wrong about the pride. The band has many supporters, and are one of the highlights of parades and fairs. How many of Johnson County's sports teams or clubs can say that? I resent the remark about band kids being "idiots", simply because if you had half a brain yourself you would carefully read other posts before you that praised the kids' intelligence, like the fact that many many of us go to college and do something great with our lives. I myself am going to college on a full-tuition scholarship, am a dean's list student at an academically rigorous school, and even plan to go on to get my doctorate. I hope I don't sound too egotistical, but I consider myself an intelligent and talented individual. Point being, band members are not only the pride of the county, we also extend our pride to ourselves and work hard to better ourselves. So what if the band doesn't sound the best this year? Those kids have a kind of pride you can't even fathom, Evil 1.
