So, are the priests having the same problem? If not, why are the priests being taken care of and the nuns arent'?

"the church is without resources" is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Are you kidding me or what? The fact that they need welfare to survive is criminal. It's time for the richest religious organization to start taking care of their own.

Praise the horde (of cash) and pass the (collection) plate.

Maybe these Nuns should illegally enter another country and then seek aid and refuge in a Church.

Every alien who has entered our country ILLEGALLY and is now reaping benefits that hard working American tax payers are not permitted by law to collect should be required to kick in some cash to take care of these needy CITIZENS who have nothing.

Our country needs to start taking care of our own problems rather than caring for the rest of the world. It's most unfortunate that both sides of the aisle in D.C. don't care about anything other than themselves ... they are all set. Those of us who foot the bill will have to work until we die to keep up with supporting all of their fiscal waste.

Because of nuns like Margaret Smythe who give succor to criminal aliens, I can no longer make blanket donations to religious orders.

Individual nuns are embarrassed when I try to give them personal donations.

It's a quandry.

These good women gave of their lives and of temselves to help other people through education and heatlh care. They are the salt of the earth. All of us who have benifited from their ministry ought to make a special donation to help these living saints.

I never believed that the Church would be in a quandary on how to take care of retired nuns- disgusting! Do the priests have a financial plan after retirement and the nuns don't? Please tell me this is not true........

well, the pope has to have his Prada shoes you know....and it costs a lot of money to pay for all his special pope mobiles, his airliner, his golden chalices, his fancy robes, that have to be specially tailored so his little pope shoes from Prada will peek out from beneath!!
What is so sad is that people buy this brand Z religion and worship the pope as God's voice to them on earth! uh huh...and when would GOD ever ask that devoted women of the faith should suffer and go hungry in their old age, so that the men in high places can wear Prada???
Didn't Jesus warn us about those men who sit in high places, wearing the robes, strutting themselves about in self importance?
I guess the catholic church would like us all to ignore those parts of the Bible, eh?

"All those who were served by these sisters should reach into their pocket and help them out as soon as possible."

This is the church's responsibility. People tithe, part of that should care for the nuns - the sad thing is we know what is costing the church a lot of money nowadays. If such terrible things had never happended, more money could be used to care for those women. It's a shame.

I think most people face the same problems going into retirement. Curious how religious life is not so different from secular life. Maybe it never really was.

Nuns take a vow of poverty. Most priests do not and they, the priests, are expected to finance their own retirements through savings, etc.
As is the case for many Americans, if religious require nursing home care that can't be provided by "family" (fellow nuns), the cost ($36,000 or more per year) is beyond their reach and they depend on Medicaid to cover some or all of the cost.

Monks and brother take a vow of poveryt. priests in orders (communities such as Benedictians) take vows of poverty, the only ones who do not take a vow of poverty are the diocese priest.

Such a shame women are left behind by the Romans, yet again...

Check your facts. the shoes the pope wears are not Prada. It is sad that these sisters are facing such hardship in their old age. It's something religious communities of men and women with dwindling numbers and aging members are facing. It's something many families face also. We in this country have a wake up call when it comes to how we deal with an increasingly older population. The question becomes more than griping about it but what are we going to do about it.
