I've been away from the city for about over a year now. I think the sad thing is despite there being a good amount of good people, it is embarrassing due to it's image to say that is where you grew up. I grew up in the fleetwood section, and I often tell people my "home town" is the one I grew up in, before me and my parents moved there.

The problem with fleetwood, is that if you plan on having a family, you have to avoid the public schools, especially after the primary level, there to get a decent education. Also due to the "bad" part of the city, it's going to effect resale value. The city's utilities, and road maintenance, is pretty bad in all sections. Most of the people who were there when I grew up, have moved and new people have moved in. It's not a "bad" place to live, but "living" there isn't as nice as it seems when you a prospective home buyer. That's just my experience for what it is worth.

mt vernon is still a beautiful town the problem is they're are outsiders from other areas who don't and could never appreciate the history mount vernon has. they didn't grow up in the schools or shop at the mom and pop establishments which our parents knew the owners, attended grace baptist and any number of the established churchs. buying a house here will not be bad i have lived in this town for 39 years, great memories yes i'm not blind there are a lot of bad things happening here and a lot of reasons to be scared but at the same time this is still a good town with bad people in it and running it there are long time residents who left who bad mouth the very town which helped to make them the people they are, research and see what you think of the town don't let others frighten you away from a beautiful place.

i still live in mount vernon and you can still get a decent education for your kids here all the politics and bs from the mayor, board of ed and the superindent and his lazy actions is what is giving everyone a bad taste about this town it's still a decent place which is getting a bad reputation because of outsiders moving here and recking the very existence of the place, only my opinion

Still education wise (I went to school in Mt Vernon), it really is lack luster, if you read the news about it you'll see that there are allot or problems. Patty is right that there are allot of good people, and hard working people running small businesses. Here would be my three points about why you may want to be cautious in your move there. There are good people at other cities and towns, in the New York Metro area, many of these places don't have the same level of problems.

1. The Public Schools are poorly regarded, this effects what college your children will get into, no matter their GPA.

2. The bureaucracy, and most things run by the city are a mess.

3. It is not easy to sell a house in the area, since of the towns reputation.

4. Allot of the towns resources (The public library, the court, most government offices you will visit if you have to fill out paper work etc...) are located in the dangerous part of town, which is City Hall and the southern area.

Some of the pros are

1. Lower taxes.

2. Easy commute to NYC.

3. Lower prices for houses, compared to other nearby areas.

4. It is a very diverse area.

Basically Fleetwood is for people who can't afford Bronxville but like the area. You will have to deal with certain hassles by living within Mount Vernon. The ultilties are truly awful, downed power lines are not fixed very quickly, the roads are not repaired often. The public school above primary level are dangerous as in crime, gangs etc... and the opportunities are small. My point would be, the cons, in my opinion out weigh the pros. There are other affordable areas that are much better.

Mt Vernon may be bad but sometimes unshiuldnt underestimate the people that live there.Actually the kids there have more sense than u think and it's not that bad to live there and sometimes I think that ppl over-exagerate mt Vernon.THe truth is that u dnt hear gunshots and ppl yelling every night I mean at least i don't hear it everynght. Also there are actually some neighborS that do say hi to u and believe me the kids here have a lot of potential but they're just too darn lazy to use it

Definitely true, it's bad, but not the kind of wild west the news make it sound. The people aren't stupid and most aren't violent are bad.

I have been in Mount Vernon for about 33 years. I have seen too many negative changes to the city. Most people coming her don't give a damn about Mount Vernon. I am trying to get out of here. I do not encourage anyone to purchase a home here. Plus the school system sucks big time.

Needless to say, if the above spelling and grammatical content is the end result of getting educated in Mt. Vernon's (a/k/a The Bowels of Hell) schools, it should be a HUGE warning sign to anyone thinking of moving there.

This is hilarious. I grew up on the North Side of Mount Vernon, which everyone keeps referring to as North of the New Haven Metro North line. From 1978 to 2004 I lived on a beautiful tree lined street, a few blocks from Fleetwood.

I now live on the South Side (ooooh..lol) I'll be honest. Yes, the S. Side has it's draw backs. Unfortunately, you will find a few street thugs and a handful of crime within a small radius of blocks. Keep clear of 4th St., 3rd St., 3rd Ave., and a section of both 9th and 7th avenue. Other than that, there are plenty of great quiet tree lined blocks on the South Side, West and East.

If you house hunt on the S. Side, make sure you start with the 300 blocks and higher. The neighborhoods are beautiful. Come and see for yourself. Talk to people that live on the block. Ask them how the neighborhood is and the school that falls within that district. I hope my response helped. Good luck and happy house hunting!

P.S.- To the person that commented on the young man's vocabulary being an example of the MV school district, I also went to school in MV. What's your point? The school didn't fail him, his parents did.(no disrespect - apologies to the young man) Reluctantly, I must agree that after JRHS, put your child in a private school. We have one major H.S. and all the children from MV will have to integrate. Lastly, Fleetwood is also MV but a different section located on the North Side. There is also another section of Mount Vernon called Chester Heights.

Lord Jim - I enjoyed your recollection about the Bee Hive. My family actually owned that place 70-90 years ago or thereabouts. I was born in Mt. Vernon but raised elsewhere in Westchester county despite 100+ years of family history in Mt. Vernon which ended when my uncle died in 1969. I remember my Grandmother taking me there for ice cream as late as 1967 although my family didnt own it at that point. I was wondering if you remembered where it was located. I just remembered it being on a main thoroughfare but dont recall the details at the age of 10.
BTW My great grandfather also opened the first bowling alley in Mt Vernon. I have lots of family history there but as you and everyone else knows it is a much different place now.

I was born in Mt. Vernon in 1943 on Fulton Ave.
Went to Sacred Heart and A.B Davis. Had an Argus rt. on 3rd an 4th Ave.(by the Playground). Shot
pool in Joe Marras and Brunswick. Fished at the
resevoir and swam at Wilson pool and the "Y".
Drank at the 5th ave Lodge(Loie Hecht),Brown Derby and most every other bar in town. Went to all the Movies--Embassy,Biltmore,Lowes and RKO and Fleetwood. Know every store on 4th Ave. What a great town in its day.
