Why does everybody think they pay into an unemployment fund? There's no line on my pay stub that says "unemployment tax."

tax dollars has no clue.... FICA is as follows: The Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax (pronounced /ˈfа&#6 18;kə/) is a United States payroll (or employment) tax[1] imposed by the federal government on both employees and employers to fund Social Security and Medicare[2]—federal programs that provide benefits for retirees, the disabled, and children of deceased workers. Social Security benefits include old-age, survivors, and disability insurance (OASDI); Medicare provides hospital insurance benefits. The amount that one pays in payroll taxes throughout one's working career is indirectly tied to the social security benefits annuity that one receives as a retiree.

We as employees do not pay into the unemployment fund our employers do.

Unemployment insurance is a federal-state program jointly financed through federal and state employer payroll taxes (federal and state UI taxes)[17]. Generally, employers must pay both state and federal unemployment taxes if:

(1) they pay wages to employees totaling $1500 or more in any quarter of a calendar year; or,[17]
(2) they had at least one employee during any day of a week during 20 weeks in a calendar year, regardless of whether the weeks were consecutive. However, some state laws differ from the federal law.[17]

However our state taxes that we pay as employees do pay for the Unemployment Office worker's salary so they do in fact work for us and should provide us assistance in finding a job and completing the paperwork for any benefits we may qualify for.

Oh you poor misinformed imbecile. "Amazing" is absoluely correct, but let me try to help as well.

I've seen morons like you using phases that include, "you need to collect unemployment since you paid into it" or "that's what your taxes is saved for." Prior to calling people names with an arrogant vibrato, I suggest you learn a little more about the topic at hand. So let me try to remove some of your fog of ignorance.

FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) tax is imposed on both employers and employees to fund Social Security and Medicare, not unemployment. Both sides contribute 6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare up to the Federal limit. Some employers list it as only FICA on pay stubs and some break it out. All that money goes to help the retired and disabled, except of course when the government borrows from the fund for pet pork projects which is why the program may go broke. None for Unemployment -- sorry.

According to the fun folks at onlinepayrollguide.com/guide (I put the web address there so you can go see for yourself) "The Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), with state unemployment systems, provides for payments of unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs. Most employers pay both federal and state unemployment tax." They elaborate with, "FUTA is an employer only tax, meaning the employee is not responsible for any portion of this tax. The statutory tax rate is 6.2 percent of the employee's wages, up to the 2007 FUTA wage base of $7,000."

If you're so smart, at least find a job or look up the info on the web and face the reality that you're wrong.

I don't work there because I'm much smarter and make more money than them and 6 of you combined.

How very arrogant you are. Anyone can find themselves unemployed at any given time in their life. Money doesn't make the man and for you to rub someone's face in it that is just lame.
I am working, have an education and am SMART enough...not smarter than....to have compassion. What a JERK!

Tough luck pal. Tax Dollars drew first blood on this one and deserves to have their ass kicked without any "compassion" or remorse. If they can't swim, stay out of the deep end of the pool. If that makes me a JERK, great.

Denial is a very destructive emotion.

You were wrong, get over it. And in case you're still wondering about another mystery, the earth is really round, not flat. You can verify that on the internet as well.
