Zehra Catalbas, 19, pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in exchange for a sentence of 30 days in jail and five years' probation. It's interesting how some people could get away with murder!

Are they KIDDING me??? 30 Days and PROBATION for the life of a child!!!! Spota must be getting VERY soft...there is NO REASON for this slap on the wrist! There are NO excuses for what this self centered little witch has done to her child! 30 days??? The Judge and Spota better get a grip! That babys' life was worth more than a 30 day sentence with probation. Would it behoove the courts to at least give the childs memory the respect of the justice system since she received NONE in her brief life!

That's a shame that this girl is getting away with murder. I don't want to rush to judge but the same things have happened in areas like brooklyn and the bronx and those girl were charged with either manslaughter or murder. She should get the same punishment as anyone else. Poor baby, may she rest in peace...

she did not mean to harm the baby, but she threw the newborn into her backpack, then went to the hospital to have the placenta removed, probably would have been better for the baby to have skipped the shower and to have delivered the baby at the hospital,i am sure the baby is better off without this fool as a mother, could have put the baby up for adoption.what is more embarassing now for the 19 year old, motherhood or manslaughter.

Exactly, something is wrong here. Have they just legalized post-natal abortions? If there are extenuating circumstances they should be reported by Newsday. We only got half a story - the inflamatory half - bad job Newsday.

I agree with both of you. However, some girls blatlantly throw their babies in the garbage or go out of their way to 'hide' the babies bodies hoping not to get caught. This young woman had her baby with her when she went to the hospital suggesting she might have been 'not right in the head'. Did she show remorse? What was her motive for not taking care of the baby? Yeah, bad job Newsday

This is so sick, I have just about had enough of these yongs girls taking the inocent lives of their children these little angels that never should have to face this. To die at the hands of your own mother is sick. And that is all that childs life is worth 30 days in jail that will be likely done as 700 hours of community service. That is so unjustified and then you wonder why this is such a problem because there should be a strict penality for taking your childs life it is murder any which way you look at it, there are so many people would would have taken that child and loved it and treated it like the gift it is.

30 days of prison, are you kidding me, why bother, an example needs to be made of this horrible situation. other young girls see this slap on the wrist, what a joke. young people need to be educated that they have other options leaving the child in a safe place, church, fire dept. where is the father of this child? I have a hard time believing no one knew about her pregancy. no best friend, she had to confide in someone. her parents didn't notice her gain weight?

There are countless clinics and various non-profit programs who will see young girls through this with the parents never learning of the pregnancy. The big problem with this slap on the wrists is it tells countless other girls in her situation that its OK to do this.

As someone who is unable to conceive on their own and must endure months of self injections and pills... it breaks my heart to hear of another wasted life. I would have taken that baby or the countless others that have been found in garbage cans or plastic bags, and given it a happy healthy life. Is it too much to ask for a person to be responsible enough to give the baby away rather than let it die? The safe haven laws are wonderful but I think they need to be advertised more so more people know it is an option. Maybe someone should spend more money on that advertisment instead of another repetative article on how Anna Nicole Smith died.

Not only didn't anyone notice she was pregnant, but no one noticed that she was in the bathroom for several hours as reported by Newsday. Something is wrong here. Newsday what happened to investigative reporting? I guess that the old saying was coined for Newsday readers, "Only believe half of what you read."

What a travesty. This 19 year old woman should pay with time and surgery to keep her from having any more children. The look of a newborn is priceless and she discarded it like trash. She knew what she was doing. And now we know she got away with murder of an innocent child.

When I was her age I was serving in the military and became pregnant by a longtime boyfriend. I understood what was happening and was mature enough to realize this was a human life I created. If this girl was 12 or 13 you can almost buy into the fact she cant think consequences or something but at 18 years old, you know. She knew. She should go to prison for murder. I am ashamed of suffolk county for this sentence. It is almost as sick as what this girl did.

I am floored to hear that she is getting away with barely a slap on the wrists. How could you do this to your own child? There are so many people out there who cannot have children on their own and would have considered raising that child a blessing. If your not ready to face this possible outcome of having sex, then you shouldn't being doing it in the first place!
