Female circumcision, or mutilation of the genitals, is one of the most political areas of women's health. Worldwide it is estimated that well over 100 million women have been subjected to it.

Supporters of the practice say it is done for cultural and religious reasons, but opponents say that not only is it potentially life-threatening - it is also an extreme form of oppression of women.

Those who persist in the practice in Senegal will now face a prison term of between one and five years.

Female circumcision is mainly carried out in western and southern Asia, the Middle East and large areas of Africa.

It is also known to take place among immigrant communities in the USA, Canada, France, Australia and Britain, where it is illegal. In total it is estimated that two million a year are subjected to genital mutilation.

Hey Democrat Senators of Maryland why do you not try and help the legal immigrants and Americans all two million of them who are suffering with genatil mutilation in the US today rather than pandering to foreign peoples? That's right the number of potential voters is 100 million where as the ones already in America are only two million. Sad to cater to foreign peoples before serving legal immigrants and Americans Maryland.

Again I suggest a forced secret sterilization program disguised a a flu vaccine is in order. Ship it to Africa and Latin America by the millions. Distribute it free to all illegal aliens and their cock roach children and all the ghetto vermin who wind up with a juvie record or a failing GPA as well. Peace Brotha ! Adios Muchachos!

Consider this. She already has 2 children and a husband and has been here for over a decade. If she has no green card, she has no SS#.....at least not one of her own. I don't know about you but my tax form requires an SS#. She is obviously illegal and got caught so she is using her pregnancy to revise her status.

This is something I will never understand about the U.S. It has been documented that women in Sierra Leone are forcibly sterlized. The atrocities in that and other African countries, such as Darfur, have also been documented. The U.S. wants to deport someone who in all likelihood will be killed upon her return. Yet we invaded Iraq because of its WMDs. Oh no, it was Iraq's terrorist regime. We will be paying for that war that we will not win, for years to come. Many men and women have paid with their lives for that war that we will not win.

We (the U.S.) need to pick our battles. We can't declare ourselves to be saviours of the world's tormented yet turn them away when they come seeking solace.

You do have a point but what I mean is atless let her have her kid then deport her. And make her husband pay the bill for it.

You are missing the main point. Female circumcision is not just done for "cultural or religious reasons". It is done because it causes the females to become extremely horny, thus making things a whole lot better for their boyfriends or husbands! It is purely done to satisfy men's incessant sexual needs, therefore it is totally sexist in nature.

This gesture by these senators is nothing more than a chance to get something written about them in the paper. They should concern themselves with the welfare of the citizens of the state of Maryland (and there are plenty of abused women and children that live in this state, that deserve the attention of these elected officials)

Then let's stop saying we are that.

If we have no business in Iraq then Sierra Leone, Darfur, Haiti, and God knows where else are not our problem either.

The pregnant woman from Sierra Leone is really not our responsibility and we should not be interferring in that countries affairs any more than we should in other parts of the world where we don't belong.

She should have been deported to France or Canada to have her child and let them take care of her instead of us.

Yes, but if the child is born in the US it automatically becomes a US citizen.

In many societies, an important reason given for FGM is the belief that it reduces a woman's desire for sex, therefore reducing the chance of sex outside marriage. The ability of unmutilated women to be faithful through their own choice is doubted. In many FGM-practising societies, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for a woman to marry if she has not undergone mutilation. In the case of infibulation, a woman is "sewn up" and "opened" only for her husband. Societies that practise infibulation are strongly patriarchal. Preventing women from indulging in "illegitimate" sex, and protecting them from unwilling sexual relations, are vital because the honour of the whole family is seen to be dependent on it. Infibulation does not, however, provide a guarantee against "illegitimate" sex, as a woman can be "opened" and "closed" again. In some cultures, enhancement of the man's sexual pleasure is a reason cited for mutilation. Anecdotal accounts, however, suggest that men prefer unmutilated women as sexual partners.

Now never post something as ignorant again. Female genatil mutilation reduces sexual desire both males and females.

I agree but when is the U.S. going to stop it? When will we leave Iraq? And now they are forcing Mynmar to accept aid from US? If the US is concerned about the the people, then it needs to be concerned about all the people; not just the ones from oil rich nations. Since the US continues to police the world, they should accept the tortured and tormented from ALL the nations. Right now, they are picking and choosing and I will leave it to the imagination of others to figure out how those determinations are made. There is a common theme.
