There is nothing going into maintenance at my club in Port Chester, NY. Machines have been broken for over a month, no cleaning supplies (or a minimal amount) are used. Everything is falling apart. But when the dollars do not come in for new memberships, everything internally slides. Here in NY/CT, the private clubs are killing them, so the vicious cycle continues. Declining membership, then no maintenance, nothing to sell, then Chapter 11!!

In Michigan our clubs are still open, but group exercise has been eliminated on Th & Fri. Classes were 1hr and are now 45 min. I guess not paying instructors makes clubs more profitable, but by how much. Instructors are only making about $15 per class. Not much else has changed (yet).

I joined a bally's and now regret it. The pool temps are like 90 degrees and the temp in the gym is so hot I can't work out. It's dirty, the equipment is OLD and falling apart. Now I am moving and called to get out of my contract and the only way is if you die or move 25 miles away from a club. That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. I have been a member of many fitness clubs before and I have never EVER had this problem. I would never suggest joined a bally's to anyone!!!!!!!!!

well the only problem i have with Bally is the open hours, they close at 10 on Fridays, at at 8 during the weekend. 12 during Mon-Thurs. Well i don't know about you guys but i like working out really late at night, so i kind of regret getting this member ship instead of a 24 Hour fitness membership :[

AND the contract im almost done with my first year, i have 2 years to go after that and I'm pretty much in chains and i cant get out of it. Only if i Die, Break a bone, or move 25+ miles away from any club :(

The Bally I go to does not maintain their equipment well at all. A lot of their elliptical machines do not work well. More recently, the have eliminated their "pro shop" and are now trying to liquidate their remaining supplement inventory at discount prices. I wondered if something was going on and now I come online to see all kinds of things about their debt issues.

I got scammed out of money joining Bally's Fitness. After my three year contract had ended Bally's was still taking money out of my account. After getting the run around for several months. I finally got a phone number and they placed me on hold for an hour. I spoke to the representative and question them about taking money from my account three months after the contract ended. I was told that they decided to continue my contract. I said that was fraudelent if signed a three year contract no money should be taken after the contract ended. Bally's did not refund my money. I told them to stop drafting my account immediately and that I did not want to continue a membership with them since my contract had already ended. I was outraged that they would conduct business that way. My paperwork clearly stated the term of the contract.

BALLY'S SUCKS... i just learned that my contract ended with Bally's back in 2003. They have been taking 27.82 out of my checking account unauthorized for 4 years. I havent even been there since about 2002. And they claim that they can do it, even though i told them that i didnt want it anymore, they assume i wanted to be on a 'MONTH TO MONTH BASIS', they are a bunch of crooks

I don't know if this has been said before, or if it helps, but the only way i got out of this hell was to pay off my initial membership and then send a letter declining their offer for a "renewal" CERTIFIED MAIL WITH A RETURN RECEIPT (you have to go to the post off ice to do it but it is only about $7 and is worth it. Then, when they sent me a letter congratulating me on my renewal membership, I faxed a copy of my refusal and the return reciept signed by a Bally's employee to the state attorney general and an additional copy to Bally's, saying that I had contacted the attorney general and the better business bureau. Magically, I recieved a letter from Bally's a few weeks later saying that the matter was a "mix-up" and had been dealt with. I know it's a lot of paperwork, but, unfortunately, it was the only way I could get results. I hate Bally's with a passion and would like to give any potential "member" the real story before they get sucked in like I did. I wish we could organize a protest outside their clubs or something...BTW, even if you are looking for a long-time fitness membership, Bally's is not the place to go. I went to the one in Shelby Twp, MI and the equipment was old and smelly, and the place had not been renovated since (at least) the early '80's, when it was a Vic Tanny club. Lifetime Fitness seems to be much cleaner and more willing to accomodate their clientele. I am not a representative of them or anything, but I just wish I was aware of my other options before I signed up at Bally's. PLEASE DON'T GO THERE!!

I had sighned up for a membership for my Mother,14yr old Sister, and I in 2005. My Mother passed away in Aug 2005, while my account was still in Good standing with bally's I called to inform the of my mothers passing and that my sister would be moving to Temecula and the closest bally's was like 20 miles away.
They gave my a very hard time trying to pressure me into paying for the remander of my mothers membership even though she had passed and would no longer be using it. There was no way i was going to do that!
So after several phone call's and speaking with several people over six weeks I was finally getting some help but by this time my acount was past due, I explained once again my situation and informed them I would still like to continue paying for my share of the contract and use their facilities, they said I would have to bring my mothers original death certificate and proff of my sisters new adress, which is almost impossible because she is a 14yr old girl, how would she get mail.
I did take them all proper documents they requested to their corp office. They said that I should recieve a new billing statement in a few weeks with the adjustments and at that time i could make payment but they would not retro the payments back to when my mom passed away, just from the time it gets inputed in the system. I was so frustrated by this point I just said fine and waited for my new bill in the mail.
After not recieving anything for three weeks I made sevral attempts to figure out what had happened.
Everytime I would call the customer service rep would inform me i was still past due, and that no changes had been made so i would then again be tranferred to a super visor, each time i was told something different, or was told they would get on it and call me back. needless to say again i got no response but also not recieving new billing statements in the mail.
Then in the middle of 2006 I recived a letter from a collection agency reg: my Bally's account. I contacted ballys about this and all they could say was to try to resolve the matter with the collection agency its out of their hads because they had already sold my account to the agency.
After explaining the whole situation the very rude collection agency they very simply did not care and wanted the full amount. I was not able to pay that.
Now in 2007 the again contacted me offering to settle for half the amount due, that somewhat seemed fair juz to get this head ache over with, so i again informed the collection agency of the situation and again they didnt care.
I was willing to work out a payment method but had explained i couldnt give them money that day like they were demanding, because i was not working at the time and had just made a car payment so i didnt have any money in the bank, then the collector got very hostile, and started harassing mesaying comments like "I guess you can lead a horse to water but cant force him to drink", and "if you can afford a car i can afford to give them their money" he doesnt know my finacial situation to be assuming that nor is it actually any of his buisness!... so of course i hung up... he then left several rude messages demanding money or i was going to be taken to court and it would cost me over $2000... at that time i had so many much important matters to handle I was not going to invest anymore time in this matter.
Till date they are still calling me demanding money and threatining to sopena me to court.

Don't let them scare you like that. First of all, you're sister is still a minor, If i have not mistaken, one must be 18 years or older in order to work out at a Bally's. Check to make sure your contract doesn't have any errors in it because employees do purposely change birth information just so they can sign another person up. If anything, you should be the one suing them for violating the contract. If your mother died, they shouldn't hold it against you to pay for services which she no longer can use.

Ballys Misleads people. My wife had joined Ballys. we specifically asked that the contract say a month to month deal. However today when my wife wants to cancel that membership since we are moving, they are again insisting that we signed up for a 3 year membership and that we have to pay a 1000$ cancellation fee! I feel that they manipulate the papers and documents that they we sign and give them.
Their service is also horrible and their gyms are small and always packed with too many people with little room to do any exercise.

I joined Bally in 1987, back when they were still Chicago Health Clubs. After a couple years of paying a higher rate, I have been locked in at a rate of $60 per year for almost 20 years. My membership is good at Bally clubs all over the country. Yes, the quality of upkeep and service varies from club to club and there are some sub-standard ones, but my local Bally's is well-run. Unless they've changed their business practices substantially, I don't think they're "scamming" anyone, I just think people need to read a contract before they sign it!
