Stolen art or recovered heritage: A lecture by Ted Rosengarten on the murals of Bruno Schulz

Full story: Post and Courier

Can the property once owned by Eastern Europe's victims of the Holocaust be trusted to the countries where they lived and died, or do the world's surviving Jews have a moral right to reclaim it? To much time has gone bye for property redemption. As a few generations have gone bye it would be like Isreal giving back land to Palestinians or the USA giving land back to Indians and Mexicans. The only just returns could be museum treasures and financial holdings lost in time like the nazi gold discovered in Swiss vaults with the swastika and bird symbol still embedded on it. Currently on the Czech border with Germany the amber room was discovered but Germany refuses to disclose the contents as original x-ray mapping discovered 30' down in the tunnel system a very large quantity of non-ferrous metal ... So I imagine gold and silver as well because the waffen ss members had fallen before retrieval there would be an enormous amount of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish museum pieces in there that should be rightfully returned, but will probably turn up in international auctions ... As time slips away the chances of cooperation are slim.

Dunno about the Poles, but because the nazis kept such accurate documentation the Israeli Mossad and a political delegation where present at the Swiss vault openings and declared the gold the property of Israel based on records indicating the gold was melted down from confiscated golden items and teeth from concentration camp prisoners. The Swiss did not contest this argument and fully cooperated. I imagine because the Swiss where neutral and processed a lot of nazi loot into usable funds they probably won't assist with any other money trails unless there is another conscientious whistleblower.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Aries

You're idealistic and impressionable today, and want to see the best in everyone. Look straight past their faults, pretending they aren't there; concentrate on their good points instead. If a new relationship gets off the ground now it will always be characterized by an aura of romance and fantasy, and a slightly otherworldly quality.
